Engineering designer babies who are perfectly healthy, intelligent, and athletic is just a glance at what the future may hold. This brings about controversy involving the ethics. Society would be dividing from genetically engineered people and natural people. The rich who can afford the treatment will be superior to those who cannot afford it. In society, people’s individuality will be stripped away. The child does not even have a choice in what happens to it. Engineering designer babies in the future may ruin the society people live in today. Designer Babies is defined as “a baby developing from an embryo created by in-vitro fertilization and selected because it had or lacked particular genes, the genetic make up often having been modified by genetic engineering”(Dictionary.com Unabridged). The parents of a designer baby can detect illnesses, change appearances, select the gender, and event athletic abilities. The main advantage is reducing the genetic diseases (futureforall). When screening the embryo, doctors are able to detect any diseases present and can take care of the problem before the child forms. This causes the life expectancy to rise because of the lack of diseases. It is possible to pass down genes to the offspring that both of the parents do not carry (futureforall). New scientific discoveries have pushed people to achieve the unachievable. “And new tests can detect fetal DNA circulating in a woman's blood stream early on in pregnancy, determining sex or catching errors in the number of chromosomes” (Ghose).
