The unnamed city of the story is a bleak place, one that offers little opportunity for growth. North is the place that everyone is seeking at this time. “This [is] during the wartime, when people [are] coming North for jobs.” North offers people jobs and shelter which is why everyone moves here, but every decision has its pros and cons.“There are twenty-five or thirty kids… in one building.” North is way overpopulated. “ There’s the park a few blocks over but it’s full of kids… you can’t do a thing.” Kids barely have any space in their homes. Moreover, there are “no fields to raise nothing in.” In North, there are only “factories and war industries.” Kids can “buy everything they need at the store.” This is not a suitable place for a child
The North and South are similar and different in many ways. Both the North and the South wanted slaves and not free blacks. However the south is not wealthy and the north is wealthy and they both have poor people. The society in the north is wealthy and the society in the south is not wealthy. The Economy is wealthy in the north but the economy in the south is not so wealthy.
Even though the North and the South origins were both from Europe, their customs and living habits were different. The North and the South began to notice these differences as they broke away from Britain in the Revolutionary War. The North and South emerged into two different regions, due to their various differences. These differences included the geography, the economy, the social and classification status, and transportation.
Throughout American history, the south and the north have consistently held different beliefs on how to handle some subjects. Whether it ranged from slavery, to taxing, or to business, southerners and northerners often seemed to be on opposite sides of the spectrum. It was not any different back in the 1800’s. Though intensely different, they were still part of the same country. One of the biggest issues that made the north and the south so distinct from one another was their view and perspective on slavery. The north, who was considered mostly republican, saw slavery as something that needed to be abolished for it was a great sin committed by mankind; while the south, who were mostly considered democrats, viewed it as a necessity for they considered African-Americans a race that needed to be controlled because they were less intelligent than the white man but very violent and because they were “built” for the hard labor. Over the 1800’s they had been a tension built between the two sides of the country. The tension rose to a boiling point when the 1860 election rolled around. After the elections occurred, a chain of events followed which would leave a lasting impact on the current United States. In the heart of these events was the civil war. To this day, it is very debatable that the war started because of the unsure future of slavery under new leadership.
The Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history. America was split into two sides that had strengths and weaknesses against each other. It seemed they were the complete opposite. The North had more factories and railroads, while the South had more farms. Politics had a strong part to play too. The North had a better government, while the South struggled to form one. Finally, the North had a larger army throughout the war.
Though it is very clear that the American Civil War was won by the North, not every person may agree. Many may argue that the South won due to countless reasons, most being slavery related. However, it is very clear who the true winner of the war was: the North. Sure, they may not have ended up with everything that they wanted from the South by the end of the war, but overall they did win freedom. The South, though they did get some advantages in the final compromise, did not win what they were fighting for or the country that they had hoped for in the end. The Union was the real winner of the Civil War, because of what they were ultimately fighting for.
Middletown Ohio was the place where the author was raised, and that throughout his life witnessed crumbling to pieces. Many of the people who once lived in Kentucky moved to Ohio, and they had to face the decision between poverty, potentially starving, and moving to the industrial powerhouse that developed in the Rustbelt, where they could have the chance to earn a decent middle-class wage. This is what brought Mamaw and Papaw, and millions of others to these midwestern factories shortly after World War II. His predecessors were coal miners, and steelworkers, occupations that made Appalachia an industrial heaven, until these jobs vanished and resulted in hardships that stripped away families from economic security. The author describes how even when they moved to middletown Ohio, they didn 't behave like middle class Ohioans, and did not become suburbans. It took a while for them to adapt to the cultural norms of mid-western middle class life. One of the things that Vance really shows, is that culture is sticky that way, and material comforts are not acquired all of a sudden, as well as all of the habits and attitudes that one grew up with, do not completely wear off, which resulted in people struggling to
Some of the North’s advantages were that their population was 22.3 million and the south's population was 9.1 million and 4 million were slaves. The North's industry manufactured a lot of its war material but in the south, one of their disadvantages were they were not advanced because not a lot of their war materials were manufactured. The North had way better railroads that were integrated gauge but the south only had inferior railroads & track. And when it came to who had clothing and shoe factories it was the North the south had barely any. But the South defended their homeland which gave them a good reason to fight and they were really good soldiers . They also had many of the best officers. Some of the disadvantages of the North was
The South also has advantages that the North didn’t have or that the North didn’t have that the South had but the South had more than the North had of that certain thing. “The South’s best advantage’s, however, was strategic, it needed only to defend itself until the North grew tired of fighting (HOLT 513). What this meant is that the people that were fighting for the South were going to do enough to stay alive and then once the North started getting tired they would take that as an advantage and start killing the North so they could win. The “Southern farms provided food for its armie”(HOLT 513). This meant that the South had farmers that grew food to give to the armie. “Northern generals were often forced to attack Confederate troops from
Jefferson Davis understood that the key to defeating the South was controlling southern territory as a means of denying Confederate armies badly needed supplies. To prevent this, Davis sought to keep Southern military assets concentrated to the largest extent possible. Threats to the South would be dealt with through the use of railroads to move troops to threatened areas. Davis understood the concept of interior lines and was a consummate practitioner of concentration in space. He also understood the North 's vulnerability to defeat through a protracted war in which the population lost heart for the struggle. (Fischer, 778)
The Civil War took place from April 12, 1861 – May 9, 1865. The war started over slavery, however it didn't end with slavery. New inventions and ways to mass manufacturing really started occurring at the period. Many inventions were created like the gatling gun, submarines, repeaters, and hydrogen filled ballon which served as spy gear. Technological advantages the North had played a pivotal role in the Civil War which helped the North win.
The Great Depression is one of the most misunderstood events in not only American history but also Great Britain, France, Germany, and many other industrialized nations. It also has had important consequences and was an extremely devastating event in America. It was the longest and most severe depression ever experienced by the industrialized Western world. When the New York Stock Exchange crashed in October 1929, the United States dropped sharply into a major depression. The world was in wide demand for agricultural goods during World War I, but they had rapidly decreased after the war and rural America experienced a severe depression throughout most of the 1920's and even on into the 1930's.
Many historians view the Civil War as an inevitable consequence of conflicts between the northern and southern states. The northern and southern sections of the United States developed into two divergent societies. The South remained primarily as an agrarian economy and dependent on slaves, while the North became more industrialized. This led to disagreements on the complex issue of slavery. Slavery had become inevitably entwined with the economic development of both sections.
The North and the South had a growing tension between them for many reasons, and the northern abolitionists encouraged a Civil War through their actions of protest. Abolitionists foresaw a Civil War because the growing tensions between the North and the South became apparent in political and social changes, slavery issues, and the growing occurrence of rebellions.
Businesses coming from other towns realized that there were no houses or residential areas around or nearby the area. Sometimes some of the employees will probably start a company town, which is when a company in particular is owned by all the businesses and buildings in the area (pbs.org). The company towns all started when they found out that the workers had no house to live in with their family and that was a big issue for them. So they wanted to solve that problem, and to solve that problem, they made Company Towns. After they made company towns, it really helped the community by providing a house for them to move into and live in it and it also
The norths economy lead them to win because of the twenty-two million in population and their technology advances. With the norths population, they were able to have many people in the army, factory workers and some farmers. The farmer was able to grow corn, wheat, fruit and vegetables. Factory workers were able to produce clothing and new weapons for the army to use. Some of the technology advantages the north has over the south was rifles, mini balls, repeaters, submarines, and the telegraph. The new rifles could fire more accurate and mini balls the north could fire from a farther distance along with reloading faster than the south could. With the new rifles also came the repeaters which fired many bullets at once. with the norths submarines
