Bad Influences: The Alt Right Movement and Their Values The Holocaust, one of the largest scars in history, ended with more than 6 million Jewish, 7 million Soviet civilians and 2.4 million others dead (USHMM, 2017). The Holocaust was fueled by extreme hate and discrimination against a specific race, which started small and grew alarmingly fast. The leader at the time, Adolf Hitler, encouraged that what they were doing was acceptable. The belief that discrimination is acceptable is slowly creeping back into the minds of the citizens and it is due to the progression of events in society and those outside of the country. The Alt Right Movement’s values are identical to those of the Nazis and have even been given the name Neo-Nazis, which translates …show more content…
However, according to an article written by Eliza Collins, American white supremacist, Richard B. Spencer, stated that the movement is made up of younger men who recently graduated college and “recognize the uselessness of mainstream conservatism” (Collins, 2016). It is a known fact that the United States went through a serious division after the 2016 Presidential race; half of the country in shock that Donald Trump won the campaign and the other half celebrating. However, it was after President Trump entered the race that the values of the Alt Right Movement began to truly surface. People began to openly voice their opinions on immigrants and gay rights and some even took action by rioting in the streets and participating in hate …show more content…
Sexism is the act of discriminating against a woman solely because she is a woman. During the Holocaust, the Nazis had little to no respect for Jewish women and were often involved in crude acts with them. The women were viewed as no more than an object and had no chances for their opinion or voice to be heard. Today, women in the U.S. are treated a lot better and many of them are able to voice their opinions daily. However, women still face troubles such as sexual harassment, lower wages, and discriminatory stereotypes. According to Robert J. Samuelson from the Washington Post, “women earn only 79 percent of men’s average hourly wages” (Samuelson, 2016). A prime example of sexism would be the 2016 Presidential election when Hillary Clinton won by three million votes and still lost. Women are constantly struggling to cross a barrier to be considered equal to men and the Alt Right Movement is determined to keep it that
Sexism is defined as prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex, and is a topic that has been on and off the media throughout the years, becoming more prevalent in the 21st century. Many iconic figures throughout the ages have spoken out for women, people like Mahatma Gandhi, who said “Of all the evils for which man has made himself responsible, none is so degrading, so shocking, or so brutal as his abuse of the better half of humanity; to me, the female sex is not the weaker sex.” Sexism has been around for about as long as the human race, dating back to biblical times and beyond. A woman’s traditional role in the family has been that of the cook, the cleaner, the child raiser, and the gardener.
There is an even bigger wage gap for African-American women and Latina women. And did you know that a 2014 study shows that the wage gap between men and women is present in all 50 states in the United States of America? Did you know that domestic violence is the most common cause of injury for women of the age of 18-44? I bet you didn’t know that every 98 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. Did you know that women are 90% of adult rape victims. Did you know that one out of every six American women have been a victim of an attempt or completed rape in their lifetime. 14.8% completed, and 2.8% attempted. And did you know that one in five women in the United States have been raped in their lifetime. Women are more likely to be stalked. According to the CDC, “1 in 7 women and “have been stalked by an intimate partner during their lifetime to the point in which they felt very fearful or believed that they or someone close to them would be harmed or killed,” compared to 1 in 18 men.” Did you also know that only 20% of people in the Senate are women and only 19.4% of people in the House of Representatives are women? And I’ll offer a few more examples of sexism. In the 70s, the number of women in the top United States orchestras were a whopping 5%. People started getting suspicious about this so people had the idea of blind auditions where people played behind a curtain. Ever since, the number of women in top United States orchestras have gone
Sexism is the ideology that maintains that one sex is inherently inferior to the other. Sexism or discrimination based on gender has been a social issue for many years; it is the ideology that one sex is superior or inferior to the other. Sexism does not only affect females, but also males. Men are very often victimized by social stereotypes and norms based on gender expectations. Sexism has appears in almost all social institutions including family, the media, religion, sports, the military, politics, and the government. However, although both genders are affected, men have benefited from sexism the most (Thompson 300-301.)
Sexism is defined as prejudice or discrimination based on a person’s sex or gender. Although sexism is often discussed in regards to females, it affects both males and females. Statistically though, it affects more women on average than men. Sexism can occur in many different situations and has two distinctly different forms. Hostile sexism is a more overt form of sexism that encompasses the negative evaluations and stereotypes about a gender. Examples include actions such as promoting a male employee over a female employee simply based on gender and stereotypes about women such as the idea that women belong in the kitchen. Benevolent sexism is sometimes more difficult to identify in an everyday setting as it is covert and appears subjectively positive. Benevolent sexism is harmful as it perpetuates the ideas that women are weaker than men and are not capable of doing
When we hear the word sexism most minds automatically associate feminine oppression. I began to wonder why that was. Webster defines sexism as “prejudice based on sex; especially: discrimination against women.” After reading this I had to know why that was.
Richard Spencer is the Nazi-sympathizing white nationalist who coined the term “alt-right.” When asked to define the movement he replied, “If I could sum it up in one word, it would be identity...It’s an identity politics for white people, not just in North America, but around the world.” Jared Taylor, the creator of the racist website American Renaissance also stated “the alt-right is united in rejecting the current dogma that all races are equal...They differ in average
Since the time the United States was founded, women were not given the same rights as men, resulting in many women struggling for years. In the second wave of feminism, “Feminists worked for the Equal Rights Amendment, the Equal Pay Act, the addition of sex discrimination to the Civil Rights Act and other laws that would guarantee equality” (Napikoski, 2016). Despite so much time fighting for the Equal Pay Act, in 2017 there is still a very prominent issue with women not being paid as much as men. Women will do the same job as a male peer, and still be paid less; they even have a lower starting salary than men do. A man can make 6.6% more than a woman will a year
Sexism is defined as the discrimination and bias towards one gender, that one gender is powerful and righteous compared to the other. Sexism has been the largest barrier between sexes to the point in which cultures as well as religions rely on misogyny to set limitation on women to make men feel more empowered. Sexism rooted about twenty five hundred years ago in which women were considered property to a man. Parents would trade their young women for more wealth. Till this day there has been a very misogynistic view towards how to properly maintain a household. A man is to hold the job in the house and provide for the family while a women stayed home to clean, cook, take care of her
Sexism is gendered inequalities that force individuals into feeling restricted, and cause those individuals into also feeling as if they can only play roles or complete tasks based on the society given gender roles. One example of sexism would be when Octavia Dawe interviewed an individual and the interviewee stated how her male friend’s would make comments about how ladies belong in the kitchen making food . The men would make sexist jokes that would diminish women not realizing that the jokes they make about inequality and women themselves are actually serious and aggressive. The second example of sexism would be restriction.
“Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”- Martin Luther King Jr. The world has been battling hatred for centuries, and many wars have been fought because of this hatred, including the Civil War and World War II. Hate has come in numerous forms, including white supremacy. White supremacists believe that the white race is dominant and that all other races should succumb to their dominance. White supremacy was especially popular in the 1960s, but after the passing of Civil Right laws, many white supremacists retreated to quiet lives and died out. Recently, white supremacy has become a new trend in social media, and one hate group that stands out is the Neo-Nazi movement. Neo-Nazis pose a serious threat to the United States of America because they reintroduce Nazi ideals that resulted in the death of millions, not including casualties of war. Neo-Nazis advocate for the discrimination of Jews in pre-WWII Germany, believe in a scarily possible nationalist and fascist government, and carry out harsh protests threatening minorities.
To constitute this, Clemmitt communicates that “As the debate continues, experts agree that the white nationalist movement thrives on controversy and is enjoying its time in the spotlight. A search on
Sexism, is a prejudice plain and simple. One of the earliest forms of violence directed toward women was the Witch Hunt Trials of the Middle Ages. Bishops debated whether a woman was really human at all. If her nose were too long, she had red hair, a humped back, or if she was exceptionally beautiful, she was thought to be a witch and was burned at the stake. There was an estimated nine million women burned during the Witch Trials. During the “Women’s Liberation Movement in the 1960’s, feminist theorists explained that oppression of women was widespread in nearly all human society, and spoke of sexism instead of male chauvinism. Male chauvinists were usually individual men who expressed the belief that they were superior to women” (Napikoski). By the mid 20th century sexism was established and began to appear in advertising. Between the 1970’s and 1990’s women began to feel more equal to men until the 1980’s where they were portrayed as sex symbols on national television (The Origin and History of SEXISM). There are two main types of sexism, benevolent and hostile, and their definitions are opposite from one another. Hostile sexism is what most people perceive as sexism today as it seems sexism is occurring more and more often and is, notably, more vulgar. It is the notion that women are inferior or not as worthy; a belief that males are intrinsically superior. For many years women have been degraded and looked down upon with the idea that their place is in the kitchen with
Sexism is a form of discrimination based on a person's sex, with such attitudes being based on beliefs in traditional stereotypes of different roles of the sexes. Sexism is not just a matter of individual attitudes; it is built into the institutions of society. In the film, Walker
Gender discrimination is an unfavorable treatment based on gender. It causes the elimination of individual’s right and opportunity (Reeves and Baden, 2000: 2). Gender discrimination usually disadvantages women because women are considered inferior in society. Virginia Woolf states that gender discrimination is a result of the imbalance power between men and women (in Dobie, 2012: 114). Apparently, women have already suffered the discrimination since a long time ago.
Language refers to the method that humans use to communicate either through speech or written. It consists of the use of the word in a structured and conventional way. Language has been referred to as ‘our means of classifying and ordering the world; our means of manipulating reality. In structure and in its use we bring out the world into realisation and if it is inherently inaccurate, then we are misled. (Dale Spender, 1980).Language has power that allows us to make sense out of the reality we live in. Sexism is discrimination of a person based on their gender, especially on women. Sexism in language is the use of language which devalues members on one sex, almost always women, showing gender inequality. In the 1960/70’s there was a
