Evaluation as an end in itself is a very different process from counseling. Why would a counselor want to be an evaluator?

The main pathway for a counselor to help the client is by learning as much about them as they can. Through interviewing and sometimes evaluating say Remley & Herlihy (2015), the counselor decides if they have a diagnosis and together the client and the counselor match a treatment option or options with the client and their diagnoses and goals. How would you set up a private practice?
A counselor must have a license as issued by the state in which they want to practice. One who wants to have a business as a counselor in private practice should think through all the obstacles first according to Remley & Herlihy (2016). One will need to acquire a business license as well as buy insurance for workers’ compensation. They will also need liability insurance and make sure they are acting within all state requirements. One in private practice should have an attorney on hand in case the need for one should arise. If the counselor in private practice is not going to handle all of the billing, payment and taxation issues they will need to hire an accountant. One should also decide if they have the financial stability to open their own business. Personally, I would gain as much experience and expertise as I could prior to establishing my own private

Kaut and Dickinson (2007) suggested, without expert training in pharmacology, the mental health counselor must self-educate. Counselors have to pull information from peer-reviewed articles/journals, books, and colleagues to educated themselves. In order for a counselor to address client concerns or therapeutic issues a counselor role is to understand prescription medication (Dickinson & Kaut 2007 p. 216). If the prescribing medical professional does not fully explain the medication side effects, the counselor is left to educate the client on the medication (Kaut and Dickinson, 2007). The counselor monitors side effects and drug interactions, while maintaining an open discussion about the drugs specific to the client treatment. Counselors are encouraged to help their clients manage their medications, and provide therapeutic services that capitalize on the medications desired effects (Mears, G. 2010).

The client had a great life, until the doctor diagnosed him with terminal lung cancer, and the client was feeling very depressed and distraught about the situation until the client met the counselor. At first the counselor did not want to help the client, and stated that he had his own personal beliefs, and don’t want to compare the religion beliefs with the client. The client was amazed as of how the counselor helped him find beyond life, death, and after death. The client asked for forgiveness and grace and felt more comfortable of dying.

Most people are hesitant to objectively look at their performance. However, in counselling, as in many other professions, it is important to be able to critically evaluate how you performed.
