The role of a psychiatric nurse is to develop a nursing diagnosis and plan of the care, implements the nursing process, and evaluates it for effectiveness. During my clinical rotation at St. Elizabeth, I have learned that providing good therapeutic nursing care to patients with mental illness can encourage the patients to become actively involved with his or her treatment.
Something that I will be carrying to my next clinical rotation is how to comfort a patient. Two weeks ago, I saw a patient crying because the doctor told her that she was not going home; The nurse caring for her stopped what she was doing, comforted the patient, and reassured her that she was not alone. I could tell the nurse was experienced in mental health due to the ways
Throughout my clinical experiences, there have been quite a few circumstances I have been placed in that have remained with me whether good or bad. All of them have been learning experiences for me whether it is how to improve and to do better next time from a mistake, for me to learn that this is or is not how a patient should be treated, how to handle family situations, and many others. One experience that I was able to participate in that will remain with me because I had not experienced this before was during my critical care rotation in the fall of 2015. This patient was dying and we were implementing comfort care for him.
“Mental health nurse also work with families of patients to make sure that patients are getting all the help that they can. In addition, they may play a roll in educating the community about mental health issues.” (Career Cruising) Depending on what they choose, mental health nurses can help either children or the elder. Many work with those who are a danger to themselves and others. “Some mental health nurses are trained and assigned to work within the prison populations. Some may work with those who have substances abuse problems.”
A good protocol is created from evidence-based medical practices agreed on by medical staff involved in anticoagulation therapy (i.e., all stakeholders) and addresses key decision points and respective courses of action integrated with the clinical judgment and experience of the practitioner.
Healthcare in the United States in the 1950’s and 1960’s experienced an upheaval with the expanded availability of the Medicare and Medicaid programs and the increased specialization of medicine. The shortage in providing health care coverage to low-income women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities gave clinically experienced nurses the opportunity to fill the primary care void. This was accomplished with the introduction of the first Nurse Practitioner program. The NP program was co-created in 1965 by a nurse educator, Loretta Ford, EdD, RN, PNP, and a physician, Henry Silver, MD, at the University of Colorado as a non-degree
Treatment takes a long time so you need to have patience and understand that the patient won’t get better over night. It would also be good to have some knowledge on computers so you can do documentation on each of your patients. To become a Psychiatric Nurse, I think you should know medical terminology so that you are able to elaborate to your patient about their diagnosis and treatments. You should also have good communication and listening skills. You need to be able to communicate with your patients, and you also need to be able to listen to what they have to say.
Psychiatric nurses have to build trust, explore feelings, assist the patient to problem solve enabling then to meet psychosocial needs.
Upon completion of the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program at Indiana State University I hope to continue to work in or near my hometown, which is in a rural area. I truly enjoy serving my community as a nurse and believe it will be even more rewarding to do so as a FNP. I currently work in a physician’s family practice clinic at this time and would like to work in a similar setting upon graduation. While working in primary care, FNPs gain the opportunity to care for numerous diseases and conditions. Furthermore, I enjoy the privilege of caring for patients across the lifespan on a daily basis. I do not plan to initially become a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP); however, I may pursue the degree in the future. I would like to start by taking
In 1893 a graduate nurse, Lillian Wald, founded the Henry Street Settlement (HSS). The purpose of HSS was to assess the needs of the poor population that lived in the overcrowded, and rat infested tenements. The HSS visiting nurse program visited thousands of patients and obtained standing orders for emergency medications, and treatments. In the 1930s developed the Frontier Nursing Service (FNS) which was considered to be the first primary Nurse Practitioner (NP) role. The FNS nurses made diagnoses, and treated patients, while dispensing herbs, medicines with the acceptance of the medical advisory committee. In 1931 American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) was founded. In 1965 Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) certification
A psychiatric nurse practitioner focuses on treating people with psychological illnesses often with a high level of severity. Serving as an addition to the treatment team he/she can work in a variety of settings. They are commonly employed in group practices or community settings and can provide medication management, counseling, and treatment planning and management. They will work with individuals, groups and families, to provide the best treatment for those with mental health issues. Nurses also contribute to the environment of mental health care by helping implement policy, reform, improvement and evaluation of the treatment available to patients. (www.apna.org)
Most are born with an innate sense of direction they are born with an intangible predilection that guides them either left or right. At a young age I didn’t realize it, but fortunately for me that was not my case. I always felt displaced and felt as if I was lacking that A to Z map. So I tried it all and opened every door to find my niche, that missing direction I so longed for. Some doors I opened and merely peeked in, such as traveling the U.S. and Europe sleeping either in a small car or crashing on a friend’s sofa to see if that particular place suited me. Others I walked in head first such as the time my cousin convinced me I was superman
This letter is to express my interest in your vacant position for a Mental Health Professional 1 Youth Case Manager, at Centennial Mental Health.
The National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists states that a clinical nurse specialist is an RN who focuses on diagnosing and treating specific illnesses. Clinical Nurse Specialists will work in the areas of patients, administration or nurse management. Clinical Nurse Specialists will need a bachelor’s degree and active RN license to gain legal employment.
The idea of nursing actually pre-dates the 19th century, but the first professional nurse is Florence Nightingale. Traditionally, only sick people with families could get the level of care needed, but Nightingale realized the mistake in that assumption. If one didn’t have a family they couldn’t get the correct level of care. During the Crimean War, Nightingale helped clean the soldier’s wounds, provide wholesome food, and generally keep the wounded tent clean. This drastically reduced the amount of casualties and thus the idea of professional nurses was born. A few years down the road, physicians gave nurses a more in-depth education
About one-quarter of all American adults suffer from a mental health disorder in any given year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Mental health is an important component of overall health and wellness. Treatment options often include medication and psychotherapy. Mental health nurses help patients who suffer from mental illness to recover their mental health so that they can live to their fullest potential. For example, mental health nurses work in a variety of settings, such as, psychiatric hospitals, substance abuse treatment programs, home healthcare services, community mental health agencies, and private practice. This paper will give a description of my clinical experience at a psychiatric hospital.
Rungapadiachy and Gough (2004) in a study that explores mental health nursing students’ perception of the nursing role in psychiatry, identifies several themes in which student nurses identify five psychiatric nursing roles. The roles include nurse administrator, agent of physical interventions, medication administrator, and educator. These authors conclude that role identification is highly complex and not always easy to define. However, they contend that the role of the psychiatric nurse should be expanded in order to develop the therapeutic interactions between the nurse and the patient.
