The science of child psychiatry is a multidisciplinary study of the aspects of growth, ranging from birth to adulthood, and focuses on physical, emotional, mental and social development. These specialized psychiatrists diagnose and treat problems dealing with disorders of thinking, feeling or behavior. A 15 year-old Veronica is ½ Caucasian and ½ Cuban American. Her visits with a psychologist reveal some of her social environment history, cultural background, psychological stressors, and her current symptoms. This is her diagnostic case formulation. Thus, previously observed symptomatology by her mother and inferential information, related to culture and biological and social etiologies can be examined for diagnosing a psychological disorder. Accordingly, the diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013), along with the Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood (DC:0-3R), would be utilized for through evaluation of each aspect before accurately making a diagnostic decision. Conclusively, persistent depressive disorder with specifiers of melancholic features, early onset, and persistent major depressive episode, with moderate level in severity would be made for Veronica’s diagnosis. In other words, Veronica has an early onset of double depression with a severity level of moderate.
After watching this video, I thought it was extremely interesting to watch as well as heart-breaking to watch. This video talks about three individuals who suffer from multiple personality disorder. This video also talks about how these three individuals who suffered from emotional and physical trauma from being sexually abused and tortured as a child. These individuals do not remember the abuse that had happened, however; their personalities remember the painful events. Each of these individuals’ cases is completely different and all three of these individuals sought treatment in-order to get the help they needed to recover.

It is impossible for child psychologists to come up with a universal parenting guide, because the parents must change their family process to fit their child’s personality. What works for one child might not work for another child, because each child is unique and has their own personality characteristics. For example, Runco mentions how some children strive under competition, whereas other children capitulate under pressure (Runco, 2014, p. 152). It is also important for parents to adjust their styles and activities to fit the child. One way of doing this would be to expose their children to activities and experiences that match their personality. Parents reactions to how their child behaves must also be adjusted to fit the child’s needs.
Consequently, to succeed in life we all need to develop critical thinking skills. Every occupation globally requires some form of critical thinking. More specifically, child psychiatrists are obliged to have a considerable amount of critical thinking. Child psychiatrists’ initial goal is to evaluate and provide appropriate treatment for adolescents with mental disorders and their families. With great responsibility comes great problems. Even though child psychiatrists have to do many years of schooling, they are still human and make mistakes. They are liable to commit a fallacy or use an inappropriate rhetorical device.
Over the last two decades, the rise of children who struggle with mental health/behavioral challenges has risen. But what is exactly causing these challenges? After doing some research, there are three potential causes of mental health challenges; changes in familial structure, natural disasters, and sexual abuse. If a healthcare provider can know what is causing these problems in children, than maybe they can help these children improve their lives so they can go on and live their lives as functionally as possible.
