1. Public policy is a set of laws that are enacted to reach a specific goal. These goals are genuinely made to be for the interest of the greater good, and the majority of people. For example, the policy for red light cameras in Rochester was enacted to help reduce the accident rates from people running red lights. Even though this causes people to pay fees for getting caught by the cameras, the greater good is helped because there are less traffic accidents. Public policy helps steer the country in the ways that our great minds think would be the best direction for the majority.
a. Discussed in class were 6 models of policy making. The first is the institutional model, it stresses the opportunities and constraints on policy that are a part of the very structure of the American constitutional order. The second is the Elite model, it focuses on influence on policy by powerful individuals or groups. The third is the pluralist model, it stresses

Policy analysis is different from academic research as academic research is done through conducting studies on samples that are usually from a much small grouped that policy analysts use. Academic researchers usually do not have access to the same resources that government employees will have available. However, they could generally be used in a similar manner, just on a smaller scale. Journalism however is much different than policy analysis. Journalist while able to find credible sources, it is harder for them to substantiate their claims. Journalist usually conduct their research through interviews rather than sample testing which is considered not as reliable.
2. I do not favor an increase in minimum wage. I believe that minimum wages are not the root cause for individuals who have a difficult time having the necessities required to survive. If companies has to pay more to employ workers, then they will add these costs to their production costs, and then simply increase the costs of the products or services
If the minimum wage was raised, I believe it would encourage businesses to be more creative on how to effectively utilize their staff and would push them to raise the bar in terms of employee training and business process. Perhaps businesses could be regulated in a way that those who have a higher net worth would be required to offer higher wages while younger or struggling businesses would have a lower wage expectations. That way we know that businesses who can afford it are paying it, but those who can’t aren’t being forces to close doors either.
The case against raising the minimum wage is very simple: a higher wage will make it more difficult and expensive to companies to hire workers. What will be the consequences on the economy? Well, companies won’t be able to pay all of its workers which will lead to more unemployment. At the end, people who keep their job will have a higher profit, however those who lose their job will suffer.
Should minimum wage be increased? In my opinion, it should not be raised. But why not? If the minimum wage increases, the cons will be more effective than the pros. For a start, everyone with the higher paying jobs will want more money. Leading more money to be made and the price of goods will rise. Say right now, the minimum wage is 8.05 and if they rise it to 10$, everyone else that was getting paid 10$ an hour will want an increase as well. And it will keep going on until every job gets a raise. Also it wouldn’t be fair for the people who worked hard and some even go to college and would get paid only 10$ an hour for a start as too someone who got there first job and with no experience
This has been a discussion for the ages. The debate over raising the minimum wage has been a hot topic. Raising minimum wage would reduce poverty, be better for lower paid workers, and to reduce expense for social programs.
I support the national minimum wage. I think the minimum wage standard set a baseline for the fairness of pay. Without wage standard, workers can be subject to abuse that may lead to exploitation. There are many people today that count on the minimum wage to help them meet basic human necessity such as food, shelter, and clothing. These workers are the unskilled and the less educated of society. In fact, they are probably the most hardworking people in our society. Policy makers would often take an example of families who work two or three jobs to meet ends meet to justify why minimum wage should increase to lift these families out of their situation. What policy makers fail to realize is that no matter how much you increase the minimum
Overall, minimum wage should not be increased because of the effect it would have on smaller businesses, movivation to work, and demand for labor. Over the years minimum wage has been used as motivator and has supported smaller businesses. If minimum wage were to be increased so would unemployment and the crime rate. The demand would be increased, leading to a supply decrease. Although it is debatable whether or not minimum wage should be increased, it is clear that it would cause more problems than it would
Minimum wage is the lowest possible wage permitted by law to receive for working everyday jobs. In America, the average minimum wage is roughly ranging from $7.25-$9.00 depending on where a person may live. Through three arguments I have received I have accumulated much knowledge pertaining to minimum wage in America. All three arguments suggest what they believe should be done in regards to whether minimum wage should be raised or stay the same. After watching “Thirty Days in Minimum Wage” by Morgan Spurlock, reading “Economists Argue About Minimum Wages” from The Economist, and reading a minimum wage piece from a news article. I have gained enough facts to realize that I believe that minimum wage should be raised in America.
In my opinion minimum wage should not be raised. With the proposal to being to spend a billion dollars to help het less than a million people under the poverty line out, and it only realistically helping people who are in the middle class and above. As of right now our leaders want to accept a plan that is not going to work the way the say it is. So even if it does take 900,000 over the poverty line this will only make a slight dent in our high poverty, less than one percent. This is going to be an extremely ineffective way to decrease the gap between the middle class and the people who are under the poverty line. By raising the minimum wage you increase the wages of low wage workers who are living of it, but the consequences from it could be even more devastating. It will cause companies to lay off workers, prices of products will rise, and companies will be less likely to hire. Don’t forget the fact again that the majority of the families who are going to benefit from this the most are already above and out of poverty. Instead of spending 100,000,000,000 dollars a year on something that will have a huge negative effect on this country we should start putting more resources on the ever growing and lingering national debt. This is going to turn out to be a failed attempt to help bring low wage workers to a better living
I don’t think the minimum wage should be raised. While low, raising the minimum wage would not necessarily have just positive effects, it would have negative effects as well. If it is raised jobs would decrease. There is a set amount of money and raising the minimum wage would not help the workers at all. The topic of minimum wage should be left between the employees and the employers, the people it really affects. It should be up to the employee to work as hard as they can and up to the employer to pay them for the job they have done. Some say that the minimum wage should be lowered, they tend to argue that with the amount the employees earn being so low they have to work extra jobs just to make a living. What they don’t see is that with a
I'm tackling the topic of increasing the minimum wage of employee. Most people in america live on minimum wage and some people even work full time. the lower the income the higher support from the government you will get. In my opinion, i don't think we should increase our minimum wages because it will effect small business, the unemployment rates will increase, and increase of price control.
Opponents believe that increased labor costs force businesses to cut jobs to make up for the decrease in profit. Other topics Mejeur includes in the article are different approaches of states raising the minimum wage and arguments for and against supporting the minimum wage. Some states have already taken the initiative and raised their minimum wage above the federal standard, North Carolina however has kept pace with the federal standard. I will use the information presented in this article to analyze both sides of the minimum wage issue. In a poll conducted in November of 2013, “76% of the public supported raising the federal minimum wage to $9.00 an hour. In the same poll, 69% of those asked supported a future increase to match the cost of living, to keep pace with inflation.” This is a point I will use in my research to explain why raising the minimum wage is a good
Contrary to these beliefs, I believe that raising the minimum wage will not only benefit the company and employee immensely, but overall increase the productivity of workers. The raising of the minimum wage will help these low income families support their families, which decreases the poverty level too.
What is Public Policy? According to (Merriam-Webster 2015), Public Polices are the governing policies that cover citizens, and are policies that can allow the government to stop any action that is contrary to the public good.
Public policy is a system of laws that the government created for the citizens in order to maintain order. Public policy should be fair for all the citizens, however, on many occasions it is hard to accommodate for all races and social classes such as lower, middle, and upper class.
