CALIFORNIA BECOMES THE FIRST STATE TO BAN PUPPY
MILLS.
California becomes the first state in the US to put an end to puppy mills.
According to the new laws, pet stores have to work with NGOs, animal shelters or rescue operations in order to sell a dog, cat or rabbit.
Puppy mills or puppy farms are places where the animals are bred for sale and profit. Every year thousands of animals are born in unhygienic and filthy conditions in puppy mills which further causes diseases and death of the animal. Puppy mills have always been criticized as they only work for profit and do not keep animal welfare in mind. The animals are often excessively bred and kept in over-crowded dog farms. Sometimes the animal has often developed certain diseases or ailments

Matt Bershadker, president and CEO of the American Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said: “This landmark law breaks the puppy mill supply chain that pushes puppies into California pet stores and has allowed unscrupulous breeders to profit from abusive practices.”
Governor Jerry Brown who passed this considerate law has currently passed no comment on his verdict.
In February this year, it was also made illegal to sell puppies below eight weeks old as this is a very crucial time for both the mother and kids and it is for the best of the pups stay with the mother during this crucial time.
Anyone selling a litter of three or more pups would also have to apply for a formal license to go ahead for the practice. This ensures proper and humane treatment of the animals. Often breeder abuse animals for their profit and are bred imprudently even when their bodies can not handle pregnancy. Most of them are also bred at an early age only for the sole purpose of more than desired profit and human greed.
Although the decision did not go without any criticism as some of the breeders felt strongly against it and showed their unhappiness

Napoleon, the leader of all the animals of the Rebellion, can be compared and contrasted with Big Brother, the leader of all the people of 1984. Both Big Brother and Napoleon show the qualities of a cruel ruler. Similar to Big Brother, Napoleon is a secretive plotter who works behind the scenes rather than openly. However, unlike Napoleon, Big Brother periodically appears on the television screen. Napoleon and Big Brother both work continually to weaken their rivals, whether it is by removing Snowball or eliminate Rutherford. Both place importance on complicated ceremonies and parades to prevent their workers from thinking about their schemes. Napoleon’s control over animal farm is not as powerful as Big Brother's
“Puppy mills create misery for dogs and pain for the unwitting purchasers of the animal, and they indirectly deny suitable homes for animals in need.”- Wayne Pacelle (President of the Humane Society of the United States)
“A Closer Look At Puppy Mills” by ASPCA informs you about the psychological effect on the dogs raised at a puppy mill. They can be aggressive and fearful. Some are so fearful, they don’t want to be touched by people or their owners. Even if in a loving environment could show no progression of getting better. The dogs have chances of being born with genetic diseases or abnormalities. For example, heart disease, kidney disease, and eye sight problems. This affects the owner’s cause in the long run because veterinary bills begin to pile up and there is no worse feeling than having an unhealthy or a dog that wants to be nowhere near you. Although there are many problems that come along with puppy mills, there are also positive things that can be involved with them.
Many American households own a pet, but their pets may have originated from a cruel background. Especially dogs, for many of them stem from one of the ten thousand puppy mills located across the United States. Puppy mills are large commercial breeding facilities that specializes in maximizing profit over the welfare and conditions of the animals. Animals live in unsustainable conditions which they are provided with the minimum amount of food, water, exercise, shelter, protection, and veterinary care; yet, these animals are forced to continue breeding for the sake of providing beautiful pets for our own personal expenses. The government should step in to advance regulations and inspections of large commercial breeding facilities because old rules no longer fit the current time anymore. For us to take home a new healthy family member, we should all know it comes from a safe place.
Puppy mills should be banned because of their careless breeding process. Breeders don't want to pay for special surgery so they do it themselves by performing Caesarean sections on pregnant females. New born pups in puppy mills receive little to no grooming, or vet care. Puppy mill owners would kill any unwanted dogs or unneeded momma pups who can't breed anymore (Activists Go Undercover). Studies show "More than 10,000 large, substandard mass producers of puppies, often referred to as puppy mills, house 200,000 to 400,000 breeding dogs that produce 2 million to 4 million puppies a year, estimates HSUS' Stephanie Shain, senior director its Stop Puppy Mills project” these mills are over breeding and causing overpopulation of dogs (Sharon). Puppy mills conduct their own surgeries, kill unwanted dogs, and are majorly over
Our message is that people shouldn’t buy dogs from puppy mills but adopt them from a shelter.
They don’t get medical attention if they are sick, they live in tiny cages that they hardly fit in, the mothers are in constant labor, the list could go on and on. So, first of all, the puppies are put in cages only a bit bigger than the puppies themselves. The puppies basically live there until there are sent off to pet stores and other places. The puppies have a tiny food bowl and a tiny water bowl, and the food and water has a high chance of being contaminated with bugs or disease. Dogs at puppy mills are starved right down to the bone, while they try to make the puppies look healthy, as if to hide the fact that the puppy was from a puppy mill. That is one of the worst things about it. Approximately 2.11 million puppies are shipped to pet stores from puppy mills each year! What is worse is about 3 million are killed, starved, died from disease,
Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds to be kept as pets. Imagine yourself locked inside a filthy, disease filled cage, so small that you can’t even sit up. Imagine yourself not being able to move, not getting attention from anyone around you, and not getting enough food or water to fulfill your hunger. Imagine yourself outside without shelter whether it’s below zero and snowing, or 100 degrees without a cloud in the sky. Now, you may be thinking, who would ever treat another living thing in such a way? Unfortunately, there are about 10,000 of these abuse centers in the United States alone. These abuse centers are called puppy mills. Puppy mills need to be illegal because of the horrible conditions and selfishness of the people who run them. It’s important that everyone learns about what puppy mills are, how we are being deceived by them, and how we can make a change. So first off, what exactly is a puppy mill? According to Krysten Kenny, author of Albany Law Review, puppy mills are high volume
People should never be allowed to operate a puppy mill! It is truly unbelievable what some animals have to endure during their short lives. I believe that some of the treatment they receive should be considered criminal. The practice of making money off the misery of animals should be abolished. I am talking about the means by which some people procure a house pet. They blindly purchase them without questions about where they came from. I am the type of person that really loves puppies. Have you ever been locked in a small cage day after day and received very little food and often had to go hours without a cool drink of water? Have you ever lived in a situation where you were isolated from everyone and had no contact with others for weeks or months at a time? Could you imagine the damage it would do to both emotional and mental wellbeing? This happens on a daily basis to animals that have had the unfortunate luck of getting placed in a home that is being used as a puppy mill.
Whenever I start to talk about my breeding/showing program, people automatically jump to the conclusion that I am a puppy miller. To me that is very hurtful and I take it offensively. A puppy mill is an establishment that breeds puppies to sell, typically on an intensive basis and in conditions regarded as inhumane. Me, as a breeder, I am there to improve the breed and higher the expectations and the breed standards, while letting the dogs live a healthy and happy lifestyle.
Could you see a child being put and stacked up on crates with other childern stacked with them? This is what they do to dogs in puppy mills, they have the mother bread right after she gives birth so they can have more puppies to sell. I mean come on how could any one be so creul to do that to a poor dog? Most puppies are sold at makets at 8 weeks old, puppies need to be at least 12 weeks old before they are seperated from their moms. this causes a lot of stress on the puppies and the mom, which causes health compliccations. We need to stress on the amount of dogs that are being over populated in the world. I understand many people do like to buy dog of beautiful breads. We
“This is horrible! I can’t even watch this!” Those were my immediate thoughts the first time my eyes were opened to the inhumane animal cruelty on factory farms. Factory farming enables mass production to supply the demands of today’s society but also enables the cruel treatment of animals. We need to end the cruelty and abuse that these animals have to endure at the factory farms because it causes loss to the business, reduces the quality of the product produced, and endangers the health of those who buy the product. We can promote humane treatment of factory farm animals by prevention through education, by enforcing humane laws by being an example of humane animal treatment, and by donating and/or
