Puritans: A Success Or Failure Or Success?

There are three different aspects of a state that determine if it is a success or failure: society, politics, and economics. Some are able to thrive in all three areas but others can only find triumph in one or two. The Puritans appeared to prosper in all of these, especially since many in that time saw them to be a beacon to humanity. While they did experience instances of defeat, overall they were a model society in the American Colonies during the 17th and 18th centuries. Regarding the social aspect of Puritan colonies, the Puritans primarily focused on religion which would guide their actions in society. Because there was such a need to read the Bible, schools were established in settlements that had at least fifty families in order to provide basic education such as reading and writing. This was the first public school system in the colonies. Also because of this emphasis on reading the Bible, Harvard College was established to educate young men to become Puritan ministers. Most Puritans practiced subsistence agriculture, but some did earn a small profit by selling their crops. A more common way to support yourself was through fishing, usually cod. Also due to the huge forests in that area people created timber and shipbuilding businesses. Trade was a larger part of life in port cities like Boston, but in smaller settlement it held less importance. The self reliance of the Puritans is what held the greatest value in their societies economics. Overall the Puritans did succeed in creating a model society. It was through their religious social lives, progressive politics, and self-reliant economics that they obtained this goal. The purpose of building a society that the rest of the world could model themselves was fulfilled by the Puritan
