Pulp Fiction Pulp Fiction, a crime film released in 1994, was the second of Quentin Tarantino’s many well known films. It was written, directed, and for the most part, composed, by Tarantino himself. He also made an on-screen appearance as Jimmy, the desperate husband in the interrelated story titled 6. The Bonnie Situation There was no official film score composed for Pulp Fiction, but the movie is rather an assortment of rock and roll, soul, pop, and surf music. Tarantino uses surf music as the typical style of, not because it is a movie related to surfing, but for the cool western sound. The best example is during the opening credits when Miserlou plays. Chuck Kelley and Laura Lovelace, friends of Tarantino, are credited as music consultants …show more content…
Like many other Quentin Tarantino movies, there are seven narrative sequences that exist within the three primary stories. The movie begins with a hold-up that is conducted by a couple in a local diner, then from that point it jumps into the three sub-stories. The first story stars John Travolta as the protagonist, Vincent Vega, a mob contract killer who is oddly instructed by his boss, Marcellus Wallace, to take his wife, Mia, out for entertainment while he is out of town. The scene that I chose to analyze takes place in this story. Butch Coolidge, played by Bruce Willis, is the protagonist of the second story and he is a prizefighter who disobeys orders from Wallace to lose a widely anticipated fight in exchange for a considerable sum of money. The last story centers around Vincent Vega’s partner, Jules, who is played by Samuel L. Jackson. Then the movie ends where it began, the …show more content…
Vincent Vega and Marcellus Wallace’s Wife. In this scene, Vincent (John Travolta) is at a 1950’s style restaurant/karaoke bar called “Jack Rabbit Slims” because he has been ordered by his boss to take his wife (Uma Thurman) out. Mia and Vincent argue over the ridiculousness of ordering a $5 shake and then the two discuss the grisly details of a hit her husband made on one of his own employees that went unexplained. Shortly after that, it is announced that there will be a couples dance contest and Mia abruptly raises her hand, to Vince’s dismay entering them in the contest. He protests and she explains that it was Marcellus’s specific instructions that he show her a good time. “Now I wanna dance. I wanna win. I want that trophy. So dance good,” she says. You Can Never Tell by Chuck Berry plays and John Travolta shows his disco skills similar to his performance in Saturday Night Fever. The purpose of this scene is to add to the irony and the flare of Vincent and Mia’s relationship. The lyrics “it was a teenage wedding and the old folks wished them well - you could see that Pierre did truly love the mademoiselle” show that the two clearly click well, but she is his boss’s wife and anything more than friendship would be inappropriate and dangerous. The scene fades out as they are still dancing and we don’t actually find out if they won the contest
In the movie Parenthood (1989), many developmental stages can be observed. With that being said, one character that can be observed is Gil who is middle-aged adult. Gil has a beautiful wife and 3 children. In Santrock (2016, pp. 362-363) security, love, loyalty, and emotional interests are important during middle adulthood. Both Gil and his wife (Karen) believe that they have raised their children the correct way, but it can be seen that some people in his family think otherwise. He also has 2 sisters and 1 brother. In addition, he has a mother, father, nieces/nephews, and a brother-in-law. According to Santrock (2016, p. 342), during middle-aged adulthood adults normally reach peak position at their jobs, but in this case the promotion that Gil wanted was given to someone else, so Gil struggled with this concept of not moving up. Also, his household seems to be hectic and not perfect, but somehow he pushes through (Parenthood, 1989). According to Santrock (2016, p. 354), Erickson’s developmental stage that pertains to Gil is generativity vs. stagnation. In this stage, adults feel a sense of wanting to leave their legacy when they are gone (generativity), but at the same time feel as though they have not done anything for the next generation (stagnation). In the movie Parenthood (1989), Gil can be seen exhibiting this developmental stage in various scenes, but there is one seen in particular that stands out. Him and his wife are called to school for a meeting with the
The classical Hollywood narrative is one of simplicity, linear continuity, and comprehensive storytelling, something typical American audiences were used to for most of films history. Quentin Tarantino, however, is not one to abide by the rules of cinema. The arguably auteur director reconfigures this narrative style with his 1994 classic Pulp Fiction. This film not only presented itself as a completely new and innovative take on what a film could be, but also created a foundation for which many films since have built their narratives from.
The film Pleasantville shows the changes in American society over the past 50 years by placing two teenagers into the Pleasantville show, which was from the 50’s. The movie depicts how there is no longer the “American Dream” and no longer a perfect way of life and the changes the world has made. The world that the teenagers come from is filled with sex, drugs, money, and is very different from the way the world was in which the Pleasantville Show took place in. Morals and values have changed in the people and in society that the teenagers came from and shows it would be impossible to return back to the kind of life style the world had in the 50’s.
Spike Lee’s film ‘Do The Right Thing’ displays the spectacle of black discrimination and racial altercations in the 80’s in Brooklyn, NY. After watching the film, I noticed W.E.B. DuBois’ concept of double consciousness being displayed through the film’s main character Mookie. Mookie handles the terms of his relationship with himself, his boss Sal and his sons, and the neighbors within the community. This reflects the way people of color have always been able to balance the notion of the ‘color line.’ This term originated by W.E.B. DuBois was a way to show the struggles of Black Americans to see themselves outside of the normative of value that is put out on white dominant culture. Based on DuBois’ double consciousness he also speaks about the clash of ‘twoness.’
“That our feet may swiftly carry out thy command so we shall flow the river forth to thee, and teeming with souls shall it ever be”. Forbidden to be repeated by anyone who is not a McManus, Connor and Murphy allow the family prayer to roll off their tongues, and journey into the ears of the monstrous souls they are about to exterminate. Their religious belief nourishes the idea that they can make the streets of Boston good. The Boondock Saints is a movie about religion, family, and vigilante justice.
Spike Lee’s movie “Do the Right Thing” discusses an issue that is as old as time itself: racism. This issue has been prevalent in our own society for a long time. Lee attempts to address this issue in his movie through multiple characters and scenarios that show both sides of the issue and cause the viewer to question what the right thing to do really is. It also leaves the viewer with several other questions that are worth more exploration.
On a day-to-day basis, most people do not realize how much the Bible comes into play in our regular lives. The Bible makes entrances into our lives even when we are least expecting it. Even people who do not choose to practice a religion have it involved in their lives. From reading books, to watching movies and watching any sort of television, religious beliefs are everywhere. Sometimes the message is in hiding, but other times the message is right upfront, like in the movie Pulp Fiction.
The storyline jumps from one storyline to the next and presented in nonchronological order. Tarantino gives us bits and pieces of one story then jumps to another. This style of narrative is unusual. Ultimately, the whole story comes full circle. The opening scene ends where the scene began. We see the conclusion of the robbery and how it connects to the film.
Emrose Bhalesha Critical Summary Paper: Pulp Fiction Mark Conrad examines the movie, “Pulp fiction” written and directed by Quentin Tarantino by looking at the metaphysical quirks lurking within the film through the use of character transformation and comedic dialogue. Conrad argues that this film’s intention is to describe the loss of value and meaning in people’s lives, specifically American nihilism. He introduces the article by explaining nihilism to the reader and then explains the term in a biblical sense, he claims that once the “…moral code is lost and not replaced, we are faced with the abyss of nihilism: darkness closes in on us, and nothing is of any real value any more; there is no real meaning in our lives. ”(Conrad). He describes
“The world will, not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything,” Albert Einstein once said. I agree with him because people would not think about them if they were in those people's shoes.
Pulp Fiction is an iconic early 1990s film directed by the unparalleled Quentin Tarantino. The title of the film pays homage to mid-20th century crime novels. In this way and others, the title is revealing of the content of the film. The film follows a very postmodern style that often distracts the plot to focus instead on developing the characters. The cinematography of Tarantino further highlights the characters, at times not allowing the viewer to focus on the context due to the intensity of the moment. Two elements that play key roles in the tone of the film are real violence and race. Real violence is used throughout the film both to create and release tension. The element of race is used through stereotypes that allow the characters and the way they interact to provide social commentary about racial perceptions in America at the time of its release in 1994. The elements of violence and race are used to entice the audience to remain invested in an incredibly complicated and interwoven story with no particular plot. It is these elements that allow the movie to have no single central plot and yet still captivate its audience as the artful masterpiece it is.

Postmodernism is a movement in the field of art, architecture and criticism. It includes a way of interpreting culture, literature, art, philosophy, history, economics, architecture and fiction in a way which is not easily convincible. Pulp Fiction is an American comedy crime movie directed by Quentin Taratino which was released in 1994. Pulp Fiction is a term used to describe a huge amount of creative writing available to the American public in the early nineteen-hundreds. In this paper we discuss about postmodernism and the movie Pulp Fiction. Then we will look in to the amount of postmodernism that director showed in this movie and whether we can call this work as postmodern or not. There are many sources which support these both statements.
This well known director hasn't changed his system of style in the last couple of films. He has a genuine special way to deal with narrating that functions well. A self reflective film is making reference to anything that needed to do to pass the time. Tarentinos style of film is precisely how the motion picture begins. We can plainly see what precisely will go on in the motion picture. The perfection of occasion, the running into each other of characters, and the staggering climax more than adjusts the scenes that are going to be endured.
