Project Part Three Now that you’ve decided that you’re going to run for a position, and have researched your district you have to create a platform. The platform is a series of positions on political issues that is used to promote a candidate. A good platform often comes in the form of a carefully worded political speech that appeals to voters by touching on a number of issues which are important to them. This is why it is so important to first know your districts demographics. I’m running as for a position in the Texas state Senate, so after a little research I found that I belong to the State Senate District 16. Then I had to learn about the demographics for my District I found that about 61 percent speak only English, and only 10 …show more content…
As previously stated in demographics of my district 80 percent of citizens working in the private sector, specifically management, finance, and warehouse/transportation. This is an area where many middle class, or lower middle-class citizens reside and where small business owners are extremely prevalent. Information like this shows that many people in this area would like to see changes in the laws that govern the private sector of business. Especially with more people coming to Texas in recent years to create new business. Another point that I would stress, as it is very important to me as well as the district, that focuses on the Texas public school system. There is much talk about how unprepared kids are coming out if Texas public schools, especially lesser funded systems such as Irving. With about half (49.7 percent) of the parents in district 16 having kids under 18 years old, I would push for better funding for lower income areas, because as of now the education at Texas Public Schools is not equal. A student living in a wealthy city such as Southlake comes out much more prepared for college than a student in Irving or Grand Prairie. The strength of my platform comes for the financial aspect, as I feel that in an already diverse, but lower income district social change would not be as impactful as economic change. This creats the three pillars of my campaign platform Better healthcare prices, lower the
In the early 90’s a majority democratic Texas legislature debated on the equalizing school funds, but no plan was gained, mainly because it would require rising local and state taxes. Texas at the time having one of the nation’s highest taxes. The educational issue continued to face many special sessions in the Texas house, a new program was finally adopted that met the approval of the federal ruling. The new educational program shifted funding from local tax to state tax. While the program was
In the state the lower class Texan is currently at right now, the state of Texas provides minimal funding to schools in low income areas. Texas currently spends an average of $8,998 per student; the national average for education is $11,674 ranking Texas 46th in educational spending among the 50 states and the District of Columbia (Stutz, 2014). However, despite the continuous debates on television and radio, the topic of funding education in Texas has been a problem since 1973 with little to no improvements as prior to the legislative session of 2013, Texas ranked 49th in educational spending among the states (Stutz, 2014). Furthermore, despite what ex-governor Rick Perry might state, Texas’ education is not a “…national leader in education reform and student achievement.” (Perry, 2011) It is a real problem the American people need to address.
Education development has been an important matter in Texas for decades. Texas has been known for their improvements and reformation in public schools since their first attempt of a public school system. Within these improvements, came issues that escalated to create our public education system today. The issues that helped arrange the system are desegregation, equity in funding, and education policy.
The Texas Constitution guarantees an "efficient system of public free schools," but schools have recently found themselves unable to provide an adequate education to the more than 5 million students in Texas because of the many problems within the education policy in the state. Such issues involve school financing, lack of preparation for college, early childhood education, teacher quality, and school choice. Tough all of these conflicts pose a potential threat to the school system’s competence and effectiveness as well as to Texas’ economy, there are a broad number of possible adjustment and reforms that could be placed to improve the adequacy of Texas’ school system.
Texas faces many problems with the current educational system and many of them continue to go unresolved due to the way Texas has established certain laws. A decline in education has been seen since 2006 when legislators decided to cut property tax which pays for education (Maule). Those policies only further hinder the progress of education improving, which is why policies like those do not need to be further implemented. More involvement with students is needed and that will be acquired by having more effective teachers. Many studies have shown that students with effective teachers do better in class than those with ineffective teachers. Not only do students do poorly with ineffective teachers, but “[s]tudies show that most students drop out due to poor academic performance. And studies have proven that the teacher in the
From the “District Profile Reports -TEXAS HOUSE DISTRICT 115 ACS 2010-2014 Estimates”, data showed in Texas House District 115, total population is 180,798. Percentage of 0-4 years: 7.5%, 5-17years: 18.1%, 18-64 years: 66.4%, 65years and over: 8.0%. Among the population 5 years and over, 55.6% speaks English only, 44.4% speaks other than English at home, and 8.1% population
Public education in the state of Texas is not at its best right now. Students are not being challenged to think anymore. As the second most populous state of the United States, I believe that Texas should be at the top of public education not only in the country, but in the world. We should change how and what teacher are teaching to students. Now days we go to school to memorize keywords so we can graduate and get a diploma. After that, some students that don’t go to college don’t reuse the information that was taught to them for four years, so basically the schools wasted resources and money, and students lost time. I believe we can and should strike for greatness and change the public education system from head to toe. Learning is a fun activity to do and school should not just be about going to class and learn how to pass an exam or get good grades in a class. Learning is about gaining knowledge and applying that knowledge to learn and discover new things about that topic.
Republican ideology has also stood for private school. Our senator wants to emphasize on private school and slowly want to replace public schools with private ones. According to District profile of District 16, 19.4% of our district’s population is school kids. Everyone is not privileged and financially able to attend a private school. Pushing people to educate their children in private school is not freedom of choice of education. Even if private education is being made free, we also need to consider if it is feasible and easily accessible to children or not. We need to consider situations where we don’t have one private school for a large area, so that students do not have to worry about time and distance to reach school. If I get elected as senator, I would give more priority to public schools as they have been serving our children with easy and quality education. I was educated from a public school, and I feel the education there is just as good as any private school. I would emphasize on how our children can easily reach schools, and economic condition should not be a barrier for children to learn. Every economic and ethnic group should be able to educate their children.
Public schools in Texas are disproportionately funded due to the state formulas contained in the Foundation School Program. As Governor, we need to change the state's formulas to truly distribute funding between public schools in Texas fixing the inequities. By changing the formula and making it more transparent, the legislature will be able to more effectively address the issues. I want the school’s to receive the same amount of resources so that every student may thrive and grow into the best they can be no matter where they live.
“It did not take a court ruling for us to know that the school funding system in Texas needs serious reform. Just because the court held that it is constitutional doesn’t mean that we can’t and shouldn’t do better,” said John Cyrier, State Representative for Texas House District 17. “There are many House members, like myself, who believe that we need to enact serious reforms to make school funding more adequate and fairer across the board.”
Interest group are an important part of any election. Their support can make a huge impact on the result of election as well. As I strongly support reach of education for every child, Texas parent PAC are one interest group likely to support me (The Voter's Self Defense System.”). I want to develop awareness and even focus on establishing new schools in various part of the district. Moreover, increasing number of scholarship and making education accessible to all is my motto. So, Texas parent PAC’s will support me (The Voter's Self Defense System.”). As a support of environmental management, Environment Texas will also support me. I strongly believe in environment conservation and the necessity of people to understand about it. Awareness, various campaigns can help obtain the goal. So, these two-interest group will support me followed by others.
The committee of Education in Texas Senate focuses on the ways to enhance the current education system. One of the important function of the committee is to review the performance of public schools in the state and improve the results of academic reports. They also check whether the legislation passed by the committee has been implemented correctly or not. The advancement in the digital field also calls for development in the Digital Learning and making it available in all schools. The committee “determine the impact on school finance of possible state actions such as, but not limited to, changes to student enrollment calculations or property valuation” (Senate Committee on Education). My placement on this committee is justified because most of the population in the district is that of
As you can see my platform from picture, my party politics is Liberal Democrat. 2 Generally young, well-educated and financially comfortable, the Next Generation Left have very liberal attitudes on many issues, including homosexuality, abortion, the environment and foreign policy (Suh).
After over a decade of being re-elected, I would like to keep the winning streak going. We will to utilize and take advantage of some of the tools that has worked in the past for you in order to have a successful election. I want to target those groups that endorse your campaign already, who will most likely be loyal and be an automatic vote. Since Houstonians know what to expect from you, with evidence of a tremendous track record, it will not be as hard to persuade voters. One of the main key issues I want you to target on is to keep our 2nd Amendment Right from being violated or abolished. One of our presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, if elected would like to make gun laws more sticker. Her idea on this also includes putting a ban on rifles. Texas is a state who loves their guns so by prevent this law it will go over well with the voters, and the National Rifle Association. Another major issue to be discussed is securing our borders. Illegal Immigration is becoming an issue nationwide but especially in Texas with us being so close to the border. Suggesting that we support and assist law enforcement by allowing them to strictly enforce the already existing laws on illegal immigrants. One more concern of Houstonians would be transportation issues. As a native Houstonians you can’t overlook the extreme congestion on highways and streets. Remind the voters of your Katy Freeway project which improved the traffic drastically in the District 7 area.
Political speeches are the crucial activity that links the different parts of society together and allow them to be as united entire. The core of political speech is the ability of the politician to use language and symbols that wake latent tendencies among the masses. Politics is a means for power in order to put certain political, economic and social concepts into practice. Language plays an essential role, for every political action is prepared, attended, influenced and played by language.so language and politics are closely interleaved.
