It has been about 60 years since the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka case which resulted in the drive to end segregation in schools. Despite schools being integrated, there are still several issues and concerns surrounding race and education. The video presented two African American students and how their context, aptitude, and motivation impacted their academic achievement. After watching the video, I came to the conclusion that context has the most impact on a student’s academic achievement. A student can have strong aptitude and high motivation, but that cannot be put to good use if they do not have support, certified and caring teachers, and the tools and resources needed for them to reach their full potential. Schools located in lower income areas do not have the ability to provide students with academically rich experiences and resources to challenge students. Although I do believe that context has the highest implication on academic achievement, I do think motivation and aptitude are strong factors. Even if a student is in a negative situation or environment, they can choose to try the best despite their circumstances. When looking at American society today, race and social class tend to go hand in hand. It is very difficult to separate the two. One thing that can be done is making sure that students are all provided with an equal education. If everything is fair and everyone feels they are being treated equal, it might make things a little easier. I also believe that getting families involved and connected with one another could have a huge impact both in and out of the classroom. Getting people to know one another despite what race they belong to will make things run smoothly. This might not always be the best option and it could possibly not always work out, but it would be worth a try to bridge that
