On July 6 of this year another innocent man was killed by cops in Missouri. Supposedly because of his skin color. The problem of racial prejudice has been clear in our country since the beginning. The many police shootings last year alone is proof that while discrimination is against the law, social discrimination is still around; "Police killed at least 102 unarmed black people in
2015, nearly twice each week" (mappingpoliceviolence.org). Philando Castille is only one of the many victims in 2016. He was just driving with his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and their young daughter when he was pulled over by a cop of the name Jeronimo Yanez. The whole encounter was caught on video and live streamed onto Facebook by Reynolds.

He was dissatisfied with the drugs, and when Tammy refused to return his money, he retaliated. He and Monique went to Tammy’s home, where her children were alone. They proceeded to beat and stab the children, killing Kristyanna, and severely wounding Brittney. The injuries Brittney sustained left her a paraplegic.

The United States is a diverse country in terms of race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexuality among others and this difference are perceived differently by every American resulting in stereotyping, discrimination, and inequality. Racial discrimination and inequality is a social issue in the United States that has caused many social injustices to the minority groups. This paper reviews the works of two authors on the issue of diversity – Blink in Black and White by Malcolm Gladwell and The Model Minority by Frank H and argues that people’s attitudes and behaviors towards people of different races are influenced by the implicit messages in the media.
Human society tends to regularly characterize individuals while using stereotypic and racist comments interchangeably and misinterpreting the difference between the two. The characteristic of stereotypes is believed to truth based on the individuals’ representation. A stereotype would be that all African Americans are lazy, that stereotype is depicted from interacting with someone from that race that holds like characteristics. On the other side of things, being categorized as a racist is when People racially discriminate against others that are portrayed or seem a certain way that is not one hundred percent accurate. A racial comment would be that African Americans are dangerous coming from the fact that there are more African American in prison that any other demographic. In today’s America, racism is practiced in every sort of way from subtle, aversive, to even “reverse” racism and, many more. the most common way to racially discriminate against a group is through visual processing, however, what causes this to be the most common mean of discrimination, could it be that this is how society functions when it differentiates against each other and whom they could closely benefit from.
On the outside, people do not see me as anything special or unique; I am just a white teenager born into a middle-class family, so many assume that I do not have much of a story. I would tend to agree with those who make this claim. I do not possess any deep, heart-wrenching stories about how me and my family defied racial inequality and discrimination and struggled being different where we lived. We happen to fall into the category of being non-Hispanic whites that nearly 80% of Americans identify themselves as. Though my skin color does not invoke many comments or bizarre questions, my dialect certainly does.
“What are you?” is a question that often plagues the attention of many multi-racial individuals. While the US Census began to account for mixed race individuals in 2000, the associated problems of self-identification and public perception have been an ongoing issue for many years (Sanchez and Shih). People of mixed heritage, especially children, often experience alienation from their cultural backgrounds, thus leading to confusion of racial identification and a sense of not belonging. Having experienced these issues personally, I understand the consequences that this marginalization ensues.

For many years prejudice have been dominant throughout American history. Prejudice refers to a negative attitude toward and entire category of people, such as a racial or ethnic minority, while discrimination refers to behaviors directly to an individual and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reason. (Schaefer, 2010) When people hear the word prejudice, they already know it’s a Black in society today. Our main goal is to remember how important it is that prejudice is a problem in society today, and it’s beyond race. For example, migration would be classified as a social conflict; especially if any citizens see that their lives will be threatened.

Racial prejudice often transpires through first impressions, when meeting someone for the first time individuals tend to classify each other associating particular physical features with personality characteristics, before truly getting to know that person. An example of this association would be to assume that someone who is wearing a hijab is a terrorist or that someone of Asian decent is highly intellectual. To reduce problems of racial prejudice in society individuals need to alter these cognitive strategies that are causing them to briefly categorize people. Nonetheless, children need to become aware of these destructive cognitive strategies and discouraged from categorizing people. Witter, Hammer and Dunn discuss in the textbook Adjust, that stereotypes are frequently automatic customs that occur unintentional and unconsciously. However, they also express that these automatic customs can be superseded, though it requires awareness from the individual that their prejudgments are flawed as well as insensitive. If effort it put forth, individuals can alter their subjective negative perceptions, reforming them towards thoughts of equality and kindness towards all members in society. When individuals become aware that their prejudices may be a result of ignorance, misleading media representations, unhealthy parenting or a combination of environmental factors, prejudice incidences should decline as awareness establishes. Additionally, a change in the media production could
When referencing the topic of racism and racial discrimination in today’s society, one of the biggest questions that still remain unanswered is as such: Why does racial discrimination still exist? What factors take place within the human mind that might cause feelings of hatred and bigotry? What can result from an individual using racially discriminating language?
