The college that the narrator attends for a short time is an instance of how betrayal causes him to reevaluate his identity. After giving a speech in front of many important, wealthy white men, he is presented with a scholarship to a prestigious black college. He is later asked to drive Mr. Norton, a trustee of the college, around. Mr. Norton tells the narrator that he needs a drink and the invisible man brings them to a primarily black bar where a fight breaks out. This showcased a place of black culture, and something like a fight breaking out can cause a person like Mr. Norton, who is uneducated about society, to make many assumptions about the narrator and his culture. Bledsoe explains to the narrator that it was a terrible decision to bring Mr. Norton to a place like that. He says, “We take these white folks where we want them to go, we show them what we want them to see. Don’t you know that? I thought you had some sense”(102). Bledsoe explains to the narrator that when in contact with someone like Mr. Norton it is important to make them see the world like they want to, and shield them from how bad things actually are. Dr. Bledsoe’s single minded thoughts and policies upset the narrator when he says, “I’s big and black and I say ‘Yes, suh’ as loudly as any burrhead when it's convenient ,but I'm still the king down here… This is a power set-up, son, and I’m at the controls… that’s my life, telling white folk how to think about the things I know about”(143). Here Bledsoe reveals his true standards. He tells the narrator that his whole life has consisted of manipulating white men to conserve his power. This bothers the invisible man because Dr. Bledsoe was someone that he looked up to, and he admits to the narrator that he will pretend to be someone else in order to keep his power.
