Ray Bradbury short story There will come soft rain is a chilling science fiction that hits closer to home than we like to admit. Ray Bradbury’s theme, setting and image shows what this can truly happen to all of us. “There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground, And swallows circling with their shimmering sound; And frogs in the pools singing at night, And wild plum trees in tremulous white, Robins will wear their feathery fire whistling their whims on a low fence-wire; And not one will know of the war, not one will care at last when it is done. Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree If mankind perished utterly; And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn, Would scarcely know that we were gone.” This poem showing the world will not care when the human race is gone. The world will go on with our without us. It is the year 2026, almost ten years and seven months from now there is a self sustaining house that can run itself for months or even years. The house is made to cook for the family that inhabit it, as well as remind it the date and time. It also cleans for the people living in it constantly as well as set activities to pass the time, but all that is heard is silence. The house tells the inhabitants the daily events and what to do at what time. But there is something different about this particular house.
