In the very beginning, MADD stood for Mothers Against Drunk Drivers and there initial mission was "to mobilize victims and their allies to establish the public conviction that impaired driving is unacceptable and criminal in order to promote corresponding public policy, programs and personal accountability" (MADD Homepage). According to the cite, in 1984 they changed it to Mothers Against Drunk Driving and they mainly focused on eliminating the crime and prevent the actual act of drinking and driving. They wanted to stop drunk driving and help the victims that were affected by this violent crime. As the years go by, MADD slightly changes their mission. Now, they want to stop drunken driving, supports the victims of this crime, and to prevent underage drinking (MADD Homepage).

First you might ask what is the MADD and what do those letters stand for? Well I will tell you MADD is a lobby group for drinking and driving and they’re a huge organization throughout North America. MADD stands for Mothers Against Drunk Driving and they’re main goal is to prevent people from drinking and driving because it is a huge killer in Canada and US. It seems odd to me that people would get behind the wheel after drinking. However, that is what alcohol does. Our brains are altered with a false sense of security. Alcohol impairs our thinking, making us have irrational thoughts or views. Yet, I also believe that individuals who choose to drive drunk have been brought up in a home where they witnessed a parent drive a car after consuming an adult beverage. Giving them a false idea that “my parents have been doing it and they are fine” kind of attitude.

People like to go to parties and have fun all the time and what’s a party without alcohol, right? The problem with drinking at parties, however, is that many don’t know that they have become drunk and end up driving around after they leave the party. Drunk driving is dangerous and those driving that have high blood alcohol content or concentration (BAC) increases their risk of causing or being a part of accidents such as vehicle crashes or highway injuries (“Driving,” n.d.). The article “About Drunk Driving” (n.d.) states that every 53 minutes on average, someone is killed in a drunken driving crash and every 90 seconds, someone is injured.

Drinking and driving is never a good idea. It’s very risky and most of the time ends up bad. Even with just a drink of alcohol it will still affect your blood alcohol content (BAC). The smallest drink can still affect you more then you may actually realize. You should never drink and drive; it’s not worth risking your life and everyone else who is also driving one the same road. You may be at a big party, drinking and you may think you are fine to drive home but you should really stop and ask yourself is it worth risking my life? Mothers Against Drunk Driving is a nonprofit organization in the United States and in Canada. The organization was founded on September 5, 1980 by Candy Lightner. Lightner started the organization after her 13-year old daughter was killed by a drunk driver. The purpose of MADD is to make an effort in trying to stop drunk driving, help prevent underage drinking, seek for stricter driving policies, and help families affected by drunk driving. MADD has helped more than 330,000 lives and is still helping. In July, 1984 Mothers Against Drunk Drivers decided to change the name to Mothers Against Drunk Driving because they said they are against the action, not the person.

Reckless driving can be classified as anything from speeding and swerving, to purposely trying to run someone over, or hurt them while driving. In America, there are countless organizations calling to help end the high death rate in teenagers that reckless driving takes.
