A well written play has key factors such as plot, diction, and conflict along with many others. In addition to those key factors that are essential for a play, there are two important mechanisms used in plays such as recognition and reversals also known as anagnorisis and peripeteia that are also extremely important. If recognitions and reversals were not used, plays would be very bland and there would not be an opportunity to further develop the story. Recognition and reversals are very important and serves to create a story, generate drama, conflict, or problems, and uncover the truth as well as to conclude a storyline. The common purpose of recognition and reversals are to provide a back story or provide an understanding of the lives of the characters in the play and plays. In order words, reversal is when a situation is developing in one direction and it suddenly changes to another. Recognition is a change or like an epiphany where the character(s) realizes what has or have occurred. The recognitions and reversals provide an opportunity to create a more tragic storyline or can be used to develop the characters throughout the play. Oedipus confused and wondering what made Iocaste react the way she did. As the storyline unfolds, Oedipus figured out that he was the baby that was given up. During this scene, Oedipus realized that he was the son Iocaste gave up. He was the little boy in the story that was pierced through the feet “I cut the bonds that tied your ankles together” (Fitts and Fitzgerald 425 B.C). He was the boy that would kill his father, and marry his mother. This part of the scene was reversal as Oedipus now understands that he ran from his faith when he was younger to only find out he was always destined for
