Reconstruction DBQ After the Civil War, the era of reconstruction was a time for America to try restructure and rebuild itself. To the United States demise, not much was actually reconstructed nor bettered concerning the lives of American citizens. The main cause of a somewhat failed attempt at reconstruction was the South, also known as the Confederates. Due to their recession towards slavery and dehumanization of African Americans, the South was the killer of reconstruction. The most prominent cause of the Civil War regarded the treatment of African Americans. The North fought to end slavery and consider blacks equal to whites and on the contrary, the South fought to continue slavery and keep the traditional practices used considering the treatment of blacks. Finishing victorious, the North tried their best to enforce humane treatment towards African Americans yet the South merely pushed these laws to the side. Consequently, the South came up with their …show more content…
Due to the cycle in which workers would be constantly bombarded with large amounts of debt, they had no other choice then to keep working and try to stabilize their finances. With the little amount of necessities given, these workers were essentially held as slaves. Adding to the economic issues regarding sharecropping, farmers would usually have to give up around 50 to 60% of their harvested crop leaving them poor and resourceless (Document B). Another way that the South killed reconstruction was through voting practices. Confederates would violently force blacks into voting for southern representatives and if they were strong enough to disregard their threats, it wasn't uncommon that they would later be beaten, whipped, and attacked. (Document C) These practices went against the constitution and laws created after the Civil War and therefore are deemed to have taken part in diminishing
Reconstruction “to construct again; rebuild; makeover” or the time period between 1865-1877 following after the civil war. It was a time where the South started to rebuild after the damage of the war. But in 1877, Reconstruction ended with the election of President Rutherford B. Hayes, but since the Republicans couldn’t get what they wanted, they made a Compromise the Compromise of 1877. It was an unwritten and unproper way for the Republicans to get what they wanted. So the question is who killed Reconstruction? The North was at fault for the fall of Reconstruction.
What, when, where, who, and how did reconstruction end. Who caused its downfall? Reconstruction is a period of time after the civil war were the states who left the union formally rejoined the united states again. The slaves were set free and given right within the government such as the right to vote and to be formally known as a citizen. It all fell apart due to the north and the south. The north did not want to deal with the resistance of the south any longer and give up. Who was more responsible for the downfall? Even though it was push and pull from both sides I believe the north is responsible for the
The first main cause of the Civil War was conflict between the North and the South about their slavery ideals. The North and the South had exceedingly different ideals about slavery. The South was a very hardworking section of the country, and they
The reconstruction after the Civil War was the attempt to reunite the North and the South. This reconstruction failed because the relationship between the North and South did not change. During reconstruction slaves were still treated the same way, the North and South still hated each other, and hate groups rose. Slaves were still treated the same way because landowners still had the slaves work for them, but instead gave slaves little food or money. The slaves also lived at the landowners house, and the landowners rent was very expensive. This made the slaves in debt basically becoming slaves again. The North didn't get along with the South because a confederate sympathizer, known as John Wilkes Booth, shot and eventually killed Abraham Lincoln
Slavery was the main cause of the Civil War. The economies of the North and the South were very different. The South relied heavily on the plantations, factories and slaves for their incomes while the north relied more on its ports and trading for their economy. When the north wanted to end slavery, the south saw it as the north destroying their
One of the main causes of the Civil War was the argument over slavery. Though slavery was not the only reason why the civil war happened it is still considered as one of the main reason that led to the fighting between the North and South. Slavery was an important thing not only because of the cruel or religious reasons, but just from the fact that it’s
Reconstruction took placed in the South from 1865 to 1880. It impacted the United States’ history by holding the South back economically behind the
Reconstruction, meaning to rebuild, was a desperate time for the South. Every little thing that they owned was completely destroyed. It all started with the Civil War or also called “The War Between States”. The South wanted to gain control over the government to get rid of laws that they did not support. However, when the North had abolished slavery and made everyone equal, that really upset the South because they wanted to have power over the slaves, but they also wanted more territory, and so they declared war against the North. There was a lot of tension between both sides, they considered each other weak, but the North had way more weapons than the South which gave them a higher chance of winning. The war lasted from 1861-1865. In the
This included Congress passing the three Amendments. Congress was supposed to set up schools, giving medical services, manage lands, manage jobs, provide legal assistance, and even help them resettle. This did not happen. Reconstruction failed because the South did not want to accept that Blacks were freed and Congress not giving the economic supports to the Blacks. This was especially a problem when it came to Blacks trying to reintegrate back into the southern economy. Instead, of it being equal, Blacks were forced into semi-enslaved conditions as sharecroppers. The federal government was supposed to give them forty acres, but never did. That meant the freed Blacks could not adjust to the economy. This made freed Blacks to have to return to the plantations for work. The reason for Reconstruction downfall was the rise of white terrorist socities like the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). The Supreme Court’s destroying constitional and legislative gains for Blacks by ruling in favor for the South. Southerners repeal the loyaly oath required to re-enter national economy. The Hayes-Tilden Compromise in 1877 allowed the South federal troops withdrawl. The withdrawl of federal troops in the South left Blacks having to deal with racist government and terrorist groups. The ongoing Reconstruction deals with the police
Over the course of America’s existence, it has acquired many successes and failures. Over time there have been a large number of accomplishments that have made the world a greater good, but there have also been phases of turmoil and tragedy. The Reconstruction period after the Civil War is a prime example of a complete failure. The Reconstruction period consisted of many goals and ideas that Americans planned to achieve in their country after being torn apart from the Civil War. One of the main objectives was to rejoin all of the states to the union to help rebuild the South and help African Americans come back into society. It soon came to an end and was a complete failure since Southerners would not abide by the laws of rights to former slaves and the introduction of segregation soon began.
As the Civil War came to a close, the United States Government, realized that they had to put this torn Country back together. The Government needed to make America even greater than it was before, thus Reconstruction was born. Reconstruction was off to a rocky start, the North and South were still at each other's throats. As this period of time went on new laws were passed, some, we still have today and others were abolished for their cruelty. Both sides, North and South had disrupted Reconstruction, but the South bears greater responsibility for the end of the reconstruction because they discriminated against, intimidated, and harmed African Americans as well as anyone who opposed them.
The outbreak of the civil war changed the future of the American nation, it determined what kind of a nation America would become. The main cause of the civil war was the uncompromising differences between the free and the so called slave states. After Lincoln was elected president in 1860, the southern states broke away from the federal union believing that Lincoln would restrict their right to own slaves. Slaves were treated very cruelly and many families were separated due to this. In 1857 Dred Scott ruled that slaves are subhuman property with no right of citizenship. The south defended their slave institutions by saying that the blacks are like children’s and were incapable of caring for themselves and slavery is what keeps them fed, clothed and occupied. Slaves worked all sorts of jobs but the majority worked in plantations.
Reconstruction was a period of time between 1865 and 1877, which was very complex and controversial. It refers to the actual rebuilding of the south physically, economically and politically from the damage of the Civil War. It was an effort to rebuild southern states and also to restore the Union.
The main cause of the American Civil War was a discrepancy in the institution of slavery. People in the North had been deliberating over the Constitutionality and morality of slavery for years, and they had finally decided that slavery was immoral and should be terminated. Conversely, Southerners argued that their entire way of life revolved around the institution of slavery. Southerners viewed African Americans as lesser being and did not believe that all the rights guaranteed in the Constitution applied to them. These disagreements also influenced how the United States would continue its westward expansion. Anti-slavery Northerners advocated for new states to be “free states” while Southerners wanted the institution of slavery to spread into the newly forming states.
There were many causes for the Civil War starting up, that included trade, states rights, tariffs and the differences between the southern and northern states on the idea of slavery (www.historynet.com)). The main cause of the Civil War was that there was a debate over the future and moral issue of slavery. Slavery played a huge role in getting the southern states money and wealth. The southern states were very largely agricultural, unlike the states in the north. Southern states used millions of slaves for manual labor (historynewsnetwork.org). The southern states wanted to claim their authority instead of the federal government, just so that they could abolish federal laws that they did not support. Mainly because the of the laws that were with the South’s rights to keep the slaves and to take them wherever they wanted them to go. The south also wished that they could take the slavery into the western territories, while on the other hand the North was committed to having slavery kept open to white labor by itself. The southern economy had become one crop economy, that depended on cotton and slavery. Unlike the southern, the northern economy was mostly based on
