In the novel, Red, written by Libby Gleeson the kindness of strangers is associated to be a major theme throughout the novel. From the beginning, Peri has been a key figure, a supportive and caring character who lends a hand to Red also known as Rhiannon Chalmers. Further along Red’s journey she reunites with her past primary school friend, who plays a significant role of; finding out what is on Red’s USB and giving her basic humans needs for example; food, a shelter. Other individuals that cross Red’s path has also contributed to the important role of compassion.
After Red is reacquainted with her friend Jazz, she is able to find out more about her family and Jazz helps Red deliver the USB stick to the Royal Commission. Once Red is reunited with Jazz at the Emergency Centre, she is finally able to ask questions about her family in an attempt to recover her memory. Jazz reminisces with Red about their time together at primary school and is able to give Red details about her father that she has been desperate to remember. The first adult Red met on the train was Kate, meanwhile knowing nothing about Red she wrote down her phone number in case of emergencies. Later on, while the trio; Red, Jazz and Peri got caught up by the police, and get the police to call Kate to pick them up, “I’m going to come in and get you” (pg 103) demonstrating Kate’s compassion to guests she barely even knows. As Red goes in the bus, she meets Cassie who covers for her when police search for people on the bus, “She’s my sister.” (pg 133) – This quote displays Cassie’s kind-heartedness to Red, even though they do not know each other very well. In general Cassie and Kate have shown compassionate acts to Red’s journey, regardless if they did not know
