Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation
(REDD) Program – Equity and Effectiveness
Introduction
Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) is a program that, like its name suggests, has the main objective of reducing the emission levels of green-house gases from land uses, through incentives in developing countries. The program includes measures related to conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forests carbon stocks (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 2008).
It is well known that climate change is one of the most controversial environmental issues that has been discussed, and in the climate change picture REDD is a topic which contains diverse points and dimensions that request attention. The REDD program includes goals that are seen by many people how extremely important and essential ones to address the climate problem, whereas other environmentalists may put in doubt its efficiency and feasibility. Given its potential importance to the global climate and its complexity, it is necessary consider biophysical, social and economic magnitudes of REDD.
REDD is an initiative with a variety of features. It does not involve only local management and impacts, but rather does include a global effort and integration of public and private sectors. It is important to think about all the management levels, all impacts and consequences of the program, risks, applicability, benefit and cost and so
According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), an estimated 18 million acres of forest, which is roughly the size of the country of Panama, are lost each year. Undeniably, the deteriorating environmental situation, the increasingly severe pollution of the atmosphere, and water, the severe damage to the living environment of wild animals and plants, the extinction of many species, the deforestation and the transitional mining of mineral resources caused contrary facts. Human existence and development have brought real and more serious potential threats. The scarcity of environmental resources is manifested gradually. As environmental issues are becoming a bottleneck restricting economic growth, it is imperative that lousy effect governed the environment.
Deforestation is the destruction of a wide area of forest land into a cleared land that is used for a variety of reasons. The impact on the environment from cutting down, burning and damaging forests is very detrimental and there are severe consequences for the environment and future generations because of deforestation. According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization approximately 7.3 million hectares of forests are being destroyed per year in the world (Bradford, 2015). In this essay, I will explore the impact that deforestation on the environment and I will also look at the actions that are being taken to prevent deforestation. There are various reasons why deforestation is occurring despite its negative effects on the environment. Deforestation can cause very serious environmental problems such as climate change, flooding, loss of habitats as well as others.
The importance of climate change, which is always debatable, has now become more controversial. It is believed that climate change has serveral negative impacts, thus it needs to be studied. As far as I am concerned, I strongly concur with the argument that causes and solutions need to be investigated. This article will elaborate the antropogenic impacts and potential solutions and thus lead to a logical conclusion.
Climate change is one of the most talked-about topics since the past two decades. The planet and its habitants are suffering from this change and, at first sight, people think that they are the only affected by climate change, but this thought is incorrect. In fact, the fauna and flora, and of course the weather are also affected. To combat these problems, many scientists are trying to analyze the behavior of the animals and of the plants to see their reactions to its changes, 195 countries try to find solutions to slow down this phenomenon at the Conference of the Parties every year, awareness campaigns are launched so that citizens can contribute to this slowdown and many more. Many disasters are caused by global warming and this is likely
Deforestation is a permanent destruction of forests, and an estimated of 18 millions acres of forest is destroyed every year. In recent decades, the forest is losing at a rapid rate, and deforestation is a man made problem because human cut down trees for economic development and social development. Governments and environmental agencies have recognized the problems of deforestation, and they set up different policies to regulate business companies and manufacturers for furthering damage the forest. One of the most outstanding policies is to restrict illegal commercial activities in public forest areas, and new policies of reclaiming unregistered forest land and regulating activities on private forest are also effective methods to stop deforestation.
Deforestation has been plainly defined as a “large clearing of trees”, but it is much more than that. With mass amounts of tree removal there is also loss of habitat which destroys homes and causes many resources to go to waste. Logging, mining, cattle ranching, and oil/gas extraction are just a few causes of deforestation. The Amazon Rainforest being the largest rainforest in the world puts it at the highest risk to be destroyed. There are consequences that come along with deforestation being extinction, habitat loss, climate change and pollution. Those are just environmental effects; there can be culture loss, forceful relocation of tribes, political conflict involving deforestation, and loss of resources for the surrounding people. To
Rainforests are vital for countless reasons; for example they produce the essential oxygen that all species need to survive. However, despite their significant importance, rainforests are disappearing at an alarming rate. Rinkesh states, “according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, an estimated 18 million acres of forest are lost each year” (Rinkesh). The rapid loss of rainforests is due to deforestation, “the clearing, destroying, or otherwise removal of trees through deliberate, natural or accidental means” ("Effects of Deforestation"). While there are many valid reasons for deforestation, it’s important to consider the destructive consequences if the rapid rate of deforestation
In developing the assertion, several activities of REDD are analysed in the video, some of them which include how the forests in the global south are used for northern industrialised countries, how air is being
NRDC’s work and efforts to work with countries worldwide reflect similarities that Gray have explained in this week’s reading. One of the greatest difficulties to sorting out in the turbulence of underbounded issue of climate change area is the manner by which to work together without the structure gave by government. Worldwide ecological administrations are different, which implies that there is little coordination of activity among partners. Even though climate change and environmental protections is a common issue worldwide; the scope and structure of the issue is immensely different. (Week 5, module). A solution to this could be increase the scope Particularly by mutual perspective taking as it related
The problem addressed in this article is the deforestation of tropical rainforests having detrimental impacts on the climate and putting agriculture at risk. The deforestation of tropical rainforests is caused by human activities. For example, humans use the trees from these forests to make furniture, use the forest area to make buildings (urbanization), and the land to produce agriculture (cattle ranches, farms). Deforestation in general is a problem because it accounts for 11 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions and the deforestation of tropical rainforests just makes matters worse. Humans should be concerned about carbon dioxide emissions in the air because without trees, less oxygen will be produced. Studies that observed the rainforests
One of the most significant concerns that have existed in the ecosystem for decades now is the issue of pollution. Pollution in itself is the destruction of the normal concentration and manifestation of factors such as water, soil, air and others in the ecosystem. This destruction largely arises from the human activities that often lead to misbalance, increased wastes concentration and improper positioning of the necessary and unnecessary additions to the environment. This often leads to the destruction of biodiversity, which is an important balance to the whole cycle of living organisms in that they support each other for their co-existence. If at all the number of animals reduce in the world to a very small number then a threat is posed to the living organisms since it will translate to it having to reduce also (Turner 2014).
The article focuses on the habitat loss due to deforestation. The author talks about the different purpose of deforestation such as agriculture, forestry, or water projects that endangers the species that live in the area. The article is based on information taken from World Wildlife Fund, IUCN, and Red List. The information that the author provides is important and useful to the topic of deforestation. Overall, the article is well written and well researched.
Forests are one of the most important natural resources with diverse economic, socio-cultural and ecological uses. The livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people Worldwide have been engaged on forest products either directly or indirectly. Forests have a vital safety net role in time of needs (Anonymous, 2008). Changes in land use and land cover are increasingly rapid, and can have adverse impacts and implications at local, regional and global scales (Brandon, 1998).
Conservation of forest in REDD+ area can lead to displacement (leakage) of deforestation and degradation to other non-REDD+ site. For example, in Indonesia, targeting carbon dense peat land forest will increase pressure to
Deforestation is an increasing global crisis and is mainly caused by human actions. Forests cover approximately 31% of the area on the planet (Deforestation, n.d.). Deforestation is the destruction of a wide area of forest land into a cleared land that is used for a variety of reasons. The impact on the environment from cutting down, burning and damaging forests is very detrimental and there are severe consequences for the environment and future generations due to deforestation. According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization, approximately 7.3 million hectares of forests are being destroyed per year in the world (Bradford, 2015).
