refined over time. An educated person doesn’t view education just as a school concept, rather, it is an idea that leaning will remain for a lifetime. Educated Person Essay There are several valued qualities that an educated person should possess. Before discussing these characteristics, I want to take a look at what the phrase, “educated person” means. Webster’s Dictionary defines “educated” as, “to develop mentally, morally, or aesthetically especially by instruction” (“Educate”, n.d.). Therefore, an educated person is someone who has or is in the process of being developed through some type of instruction. Good Listener In a world full of distractions, it can be difficult to listen, decipher, and retain information. An educated person is able to listen well to others and interpret the information they are given. It can be difficult to truly hear someone without having a personal bias or criticism on the tongue, especially if you do not agree with what is being said. An educated person is able to truly hear the thoughts of others. I believe they are also able to decipher and filter through information given to them to decide what is accurate and what is inaccurate. Writer, William Cronon, said that, “they can follow an argument, track logical reasoning, detect illogic, hear the emotions that lie behind the logic, and ultimately empathize with the person who is feeling the emotions” (“Cronon”, 1998).
