Schools all over the nation have introduced standardized testing as a way to evaluate what the students have learned over the course of the school year. Exams can be administered online or on paper, depending on the subject. Test can be taken at different points of the school year; results can be used as a way to determine what areas are weaker than others. Most results are viewed by the school board, administrators, and teachers. In some schools students take one end of the year test with different subjects, other just takes one test. These tests can be graded by groups of people are computers. Standardized testing has become a part of America’s educational system and many don’t see the benefit of the test at all.

The use of standardized testing to measure students’ knowledge is an inaccurate reflection of their capabilities. By being forced to take a test that does not effectively show their abilities, students become overstressed, and the tests themselves do not promote true academic achievement. Rather than learning about subjects in order to gain knowledge, students simply memorize facts and formulas to get a decent test score. Standardized tests are not an appropriate measure of student performance, only benefit certain groups of students, and do not prepare students for the real world.

Many students throughout the American education system struggle due to the fact that they have to take a standardized test. But, this struggle differs for each student, some are too lazy to take them while others are having difficulty performing well on these tests. As a student who learned English as a second language, I could relate with the people who are having trouble performing well on standardized tests. When I was in high school there was nothing more frightening than Standardized tests. There was a lot of emphasize on these tests and they had the power to determine my future in the means of deciding which colleges I could attend. But, I wasn’t alone in this matter, not all students perform to their potential on Standardized tests. No matter how hard I tried to study for these tests, I was just not doing as well as my class mates. It made me feel like I was beneath all my other class mates and I thought they were intellectually superior. Standardized tests have caused disagreements all across the U.S. According to http://standardizedtests.procon.org/, though they don’t improve most student achievements, it does improve positive effects in 93% of students. Hundreds of thousands of teachers and parents around the U.S are very against Standardized Tests. The teachers opt against the tests for the simple fact of they are evaluated from the results of their students. Parents opt because the tests end up stressing out there children. Standardized testing teaches students to take tests. The average student takes about 113 tests from kindergarten to 12th grade.

One motivation behind why kids shouldn't take Standardized test is on the grounds that it is bringing about anxiety to both educators and understudies! As per Gregory J. These test are demoralizing understudies in light of the fact that these test figure out if or not you graduate or not. Standardized tests are an unfair way to be accessed because they do not accurately represent a student’s abilities. Many people don’t perform well on tests; they are smart, and understand the subject, but they don’t show it on the test. It is easy to forget something on a test, even if you studied for a while and normally understand the topic. Many students experience nerves or anxiety when taking a test. Feeling nervous has been proven to affect a student's performance for the worst. Students panic if they run into a question they aren’t sure of the answer to which decreases their score even more. 50% to 80% of test scores were fluctuated and had nothing to do with the actual growth in learning of a student. This shows that tests are an unfair analyzation because the scores are not accurate.

Why do students think these are hard if you just think and do it things in life will be so much easier when you grow up but students think standardized tests are lame and boring because they just want to act cool around their friends. Some people think that doing standardized tests are boring and dumb, and others disagree and say that the tests help you get better in school and help you in the future. I believe schools should have their students do the standardized tests so they get better grades and get a better education in school. It helps you, your teachers, schools, etc. It also helps you in your student achievement, curriculum, and other stakeholders.

Standardized testing has lowered student achievement in the past several years. “The US has slipped from 18th in the world in math in 2002, to 31st place in 2009” (Walker). Something needs to be done, because a good education is how Americans succeed. American children are losing a battle with education because of these high stakes testing. The original purpose of the tests is “to ensure that all children have a fair and equal opportunity to obtain high-quality education at minimum proficiency on State standards” (“Title I - Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged”). But, the test anxiety is becoming more prevalent, and is keeping students from performing their best (Kohn).

Most standardized tests are multiple-choice, meaning any good guesser can past a test; even tests with short answer or constructed response are easy to get by if the student can master a strategy or template to answer those question. Standardized tests do not value the diversity and creativity of students. These tests expect all students to make the same cookie-cutter answer, but students will think of their own answer and their own reasoning. Their answer may not have been wrong; it was just different from the very basic answer key. Perhaps the biggest and most negative impact is that because of these tests, kids spend less time actually learning. Tests, do not only weigh a lot in the grade book, it weighs a lot on a student’s confidence and their promotion. Instead doing the real work and trying their best, some kids end up cheating (teachers do it too because their job is at stake) because as long as they get away it, they have made themselves a hundred. Exams are like your girlfriend. They ask way too many questions, they are difficult to understand, there is always more explanation needed, and of course the result is you always fail. I like to think this accurately describes how most people feel about standardized tests, but then again, I don't really think people ever feel fondly about a standardized tests. Ever since elementary school we have had to take tests. Most of these tests were simple and only had to do with one subject. Other tests are rather large and consist of multiple subject and there is alloted time to take these tests. These tests are standard tests that are mandatory for everyone in school to take. The purpose of the tests is to measure how well your education is going. Since you take them year after year you can see how you are progressing in your intelligence. The only problem is that there is an enormous amount of weight placed on doing well on these tests. Therefore classes give tests with similar format and questions. Students are also taught to be good test takers. With all this testing there can be unnecessary stress put on students and teachers out of fear of doing poorly. Standardized testing, while a good measurement of learning, often puts more stress on students than necessary.
