REFLECTIONS AND SYNTHESIS of COURSES and INTERNSHIP When reflecting on the individual courses, I had very little application and experience in the actual budgeting process. I learned the most NEW information in the finance class. I knew how to do a budget and understood basic functions of input and output and even some basic formulas. The qualitative functions of the budget were the most interesting and certainly explained many decisions made over the past many years in reference to building projects and staffing. I learned through Dr. Vandew’s commentary to understand the value in resource allocations and the political documentation and communication necessary when developing budgets (A. In the beginning, I was not completely sure if this was what I wanted to do in life, but over time I became more confident in this grand goal and more confident in myself. Each course would teach me something new about education and about me personally. I am thankful for every educator who helped me along the way and showed me that I am not wasting my time with these classes and with this profession as a whole. My target is in sight and with a little more work, I will be making a change like I always dreamed. The budget is a plan of how to spend available funds wisely, and entails a list of all expected revenues and expenses. The budget is compiled annually and marks the beginning and end of the fiscal year. While the primary burden of the budget lies with the finance department, it is the responsibility of all faculty affected by budgetary practices to provide insight into the projected financial future of the school. The goal and evidence of a successful budget is to have the actual numbers of the financial year equal or come close to the estimated
The Accounting for Management Decision Making class has provided several concepts that have improved my ability to make decisions for my organization, a large hospital. This course also helped me increase my knowledge of strategic planning, forecasting and budgeting. Additionally, I learned to calculate standard versus actual costs as well as opportunity cost.
Analyze the basic skills and tools needed for budgeting for public sector agencies and / or departments.
A company's budget serves as a guideline in planning and committing costs in order to meet tactical and strategic goals. Tactical goals such as providing budgetary costs for daily operations, and strategic objectives that include R&D, production, marketing, and distribution are all part of the budgeting process. Serving as a guideline rather than being set in stone, the budget is a snapshot of manager's "best thinking at the time it is prepared." (Marshall, 2003, p.496) The budget is a method in which to reign-in discretionary spending, and will likely show variances between what costs have been anticipated and what costs are actually incurred.
The central challenge that budget developers encounter is predicting what the future holds for the internal business and external factors. Reading the future is something that can never be done with perfect precision. The fast pace of technological change, the complexities of global competition and world events make developing effective budgets both more difficult and more important.
Budget is the major financial and economic statement. The role of the budget is to keep track of the money coming in and the money going out. It is essential part of running any business effectively. It can help make a short and long term projections about financial situation, avert a financial crisis and plan for major financial changes.
“It’s clearly a budget. It’s got a lot of numbers in it” (George W. Busch 2005). This definition of a budget can be supplemented using the Oxford dictionary, which states that a budget is an estimate of income and expenditures for a set period of time. Nowadays almost every business uses budgets and managers use them as a tool in order to set targets. In other words managers can, with the use of budgets, explain in a financial way what are the
When reflecting on my experience as both a student and a life learner, I never would have considered myself a leader. In fact, I have always been the shy kid who hides in the back of the class and panics whenever it is their turn to respond to a question. College however provided me with an opportunity to develop myself as a leader. I became more active in school activities and actively sought out leadership roles. As I’ve progressed in my professional life, I’ve become more interested in what it takes to make a strong leader. When assuming leadership roles, I’ve always considered myself an authentic leader but I know I’ve often struggled in detailing clear goals for my group or organization. Thankfully, Enrolling in the effective
Budget and budgetary control practices are undeniably indispensable as organizations routinely go about their business activities and operations. These organizations are constantly on the alert on how actual levels of performance agree with planned or budgeted performance. A budget expresses a plan in monetary terms. It is prepared and approved prior to a particular budgeted period and explicitly may show the income, expenditure and the capital to be employed by organizations in achieving their goals and objectives.
