The purpose of this journal is to be aware of what I learn in this course. In this reflection I am trying to write down some of my thinking that I have been through while doing this course. Through this I become able to make sense of what I did and how it help me to do better in future. I personally believe that the process of writing journal is in itself very useful because it makes sure that I really listen carefully in class.
It was good experience for me because I learned many exciting and informative things.
My Reflection
In the beginning of this course, I was very anxious. Then day-by-day, I started to feel comfortable in our class environment. Throughout this whole course I came to know about many new things that I want to mention in this reflection.
Let’s see what I have experienced in each class of this course.
Now I can say this confidently that I have knowledge of 7 C’s of communication. In the class everybody has so many ideas and skills that I learn and apply on myself. This helps me to improve language skills, vocabulary and the way I express my words/ideas. So I can say now that this guidance and information helps me a lot.
Furthermore, I like to receive feedback on my every presentation. So I can be able to avoid all my mistakes in upcoming days and in this course I received positive feedback. I gave business, persuasive and group presentations.

In When We Fight, We Win by Greg Jobin-Leeds it says that “comparison can block compassion both for others and for ourselves.” I agree with such statement; I think that listening is a skill you learn throughout time. One can pretend to listen without really getting anything out of the conversation that one is having with that other person. In the Compassionate Listening workshop, I got to do it with Rachel Kurland and I sit and listened to her talking about the moment her friend treason her. I tried to understand her plight, why would she not cut that friendship off, I understood she loved her friend, however, I could not resist bringing my biases to our conversation. Reflection is a major factor in "developing self-awareness" to improve services provided to everyone around me, this is to develop my own understanding in realising the good and bad made previously. Moving forward with a better understanding, as well as rectifying the mistake whilst recognizing the good points, (Horton-Deutsch and Sherwood, 2008).
This reflective essay will be adopted from Rolfe, Freshwater and Jasper’s (2001) reflection model. This class has been very good for me because the content informed me about three important concepts. The first one is the Visualize Yourself Giving an Effective Speech to prepare yourself. I do not recall learning about reflective practice in my undergraduate studies. Reflective practice according to Barbour (2013), “is the cyclic process of internally examining and exploring an issue of concern, triggered by an experience, which creates and clarifies meaning in terms of self, existing knowledge, and experience; resulting in a changed conceptual perceptive and practice” (p. 7). According to Barbour (2013), reflective process has many positive outcomes to help guide the nurse to become an expert nurse that can make on the spot decisions that do not interrupt patient care. I feel that reflective practice would have been beneficial to help guide me from a student nurse to a practicing nurse with critical thinking skills.

This semester I learned a lot about writing in English 151. It has been a roller coaster ride with these essays for me this semester. I learned step by step how to write a good essay and how to have your readers be engaged in what you’re trying to tell them. Each essay I did has taught me something valuable I can take to the next level of English. I feel as if as the semester went by I did not take my writing that seriously and that reflected in my grades I received in each essay. It made me a better student and writer and it will reflect next semester. The purpose of this assignment is to discuss the contribution of reflective practice for clinical nursing. Reflection has been defined as a way for individuals to “capture their experience, think about it, mull it over and evaluate” (Boud et al 1985: 19)
For the last six weeks in both mental and acute setting, I have reflected on events that I had met in each week. Now, I am going to identify essential personal learning outcomes from those events and will include personal awareness of strengths and weaknesses. Among the different models of reflection, I will use the Gibbs model of reflection which entails six stages such as description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion, action plan.
As a middle schooler, I have experienced success and failure. Sports in middle were not always good for me. In some cases I was the only one struggling personally. Other times it was my whole team and I that were struggling. Instead of giving up in these moments and just quitting the sport or blaming it on someone else, I tried to be a leader and help myself and others to get better.

In the final days of this semester, one tends to look back at the work done over a difficult and long three months. In the case of this English composition class, reflecting on completed essays has allowed me to analyze the development of my writing over the semester. Although this semester consisted of only five essays, it has become apparent to me that my writing has improved in many aspects throughout the semester. One general example of this improvement is the vocabulary, where simple vocabulary in the first essay had become more complex by the final essays. Additionally, I also believe that my writing has become more reflective of my actual voice and opinions, an improvement considering my first essays were best described as vague.

Reflection is considered as a vital element of professional practice as it precedes to insight and then subsequent change in practice. The hypothesis of reflection is not new as it can be tracked as far back in the 5th century by the influential Greek philosopher, Socrates and to the 1930s primarily focusing on John Dewey’s work. Dewey is one of the founders of learning from experience. He theorised reflection as ‘active, persistent and careful consideration’ (Dewey, 1933) initiated by a specific situation which was opposing, perplexing or uncertain. One of its most common use today is coming up with a thought, an idea, or opinion made or an observation made as a result of concentration, suggesting in essence a way of thinking in which one looks back and meditate upon (Agnes, 2004).
Reflection helps one to improve especially when they can draw lessons from the positive and negative experiences of the past. It is an active process that enables individuals to understand how historical, social, cultural, as well as personal experiences contribute to how we study or learn. In any aspect of life, reflection can be applied to help individuals focus their efforts in getting the most out of different situations, and, therefore, improving self-performance and becoming lifelong learners.
