Since I am a freshman, and this was my first colloquium, I did not know what to expect. I select Greek life, bullying in adulthood, and the Great Blasket Islands. Bullying in adulthood got cancelled and I went to human trafficking and domestic violence instead. I was very interested in learning new information about these interesting topics. I was especially excited about hearing Mrs. Gertz talk about her trip to the Great Blasket Islands. I have her for English and she got me hooked the first time she mentioned she would be doing her chat over her trip. The first chat I went to was over Greek life and the whole era in general. The most interesting story that the professor told was about Oedipus. Laius and Jocasta are the king and queen on Thebes. The king goes to a fortune teller because they are having trouble conceiving a child. He is told, they will have a child, but his son will kill him and marry and have children with the queen. They send the child to someone far away, so the prophesy cannot be filled. The young boy ends up becoming a king somewhere else then goes out and meets his father and they fight and he kills his father. He had no idea who the man was. He ventures out and kills a sphynx and then becomes king because of that. He never thought the place he now ended up at was supposed to be his true home. He marries the current queen and the prophesy is filled. The story shows there are some things you cannot escape but you make your own legacy at the same
I really enjoyed learning about the mailroom. The mail room was were the letters going to or from the inmates were searched for drugs, pornographic material, semen bombs and what they were writing about. The envelopes are dissected, drugs are stored in the flaps of the envelope. Something that I found really odd was that the inmates were trying to send their semen through mail for whatever reason. In one case, a male inmate was trying to send his girlfriend semen through the mail in hopes to get pregnant unfortunately that is not how it works. Also, I learned that people were flying drones over the prisons yard and delivering drugs and other things to the inmates. This is not a common thing yet but the prison is taking precautionary steps towards to stopping this issue with the use of
I will be discussing a well-rounded healthy diet, benefits of bathing your bearded dragon, how to keep them at their best while learning
English Comp 1 was an eye opening experience. The course was emotionally and physically draining, but I strongly believe it prepared me for Comp 2. Learning and improving are a few of the rewards I received through hard work and dedication during the course. Throughout English comp 1, I discovered my biggest weakness. I improved some of my various difficulties, and I achieved a rewarding high point.
Interpersonal communication can be defined a number of ways, but it is usually described as communication between or among connected persons, or those in a close relationship. Over the past few weeks, I have really been able to examine my own interpersonal communication between and among the people I am connected to or have close relationships with. Prior to this course, I felt my interpersonal communication skills were above average and very effective. However, I have discovered there are many ways I can improve my interpersonal communications and relationships with others. Through the exercises conducted during this course I have realized that I need to work on my effective listening, perception of others and how my nonverbal cues can cause
I have to say that today’s discussion was pretty much interesting. I heard a lot of stories from my classmates.
The first major thing that I learned was about Homer; who he was and how his writings “helped shape the Greek spirit and Greek religion” (Perry, Chase and Jacob). I feel that Homer, and his works, such as “Iliad” and “The Odyssey”, were very important because they allowed a transformation in the views of an individual. Homer placed the individual as another force of life that has the power to change events and determine their own lives, not just the gods, in his works. “Homer’s view of the eternal order of the world and his conception of the individual striving for excellence that brought honor and esteem form the foundations of the Greek
Today I talked about George Washington's life from birth until the day he died, Florida's from 1513 to now, whiteboards non-electric and electric, The American Revolutionary War to the places they were at to the armies they had, and interesting facts about John Cena's
Being able to volunteer by tabling and setting up for the FGCU Farmer’s Market has provided me with hands on applications of University Colloquium concepts and skills required in my nursing major. The FGCU Farmer’s Market is a biweekly farmer’s market bringing local farmers and small businesses onto campus, while also providing setting up and tabling via colloquium students to communicate the benefits of these markets.
Next on our list of adventuring was taking a nice walk around campus. While trekking across the campus, we talked about our majors, some of the classes we were taking this semester, as well as what we do in our free time. Not only did we get some exercise,
There were many good topics we learned about this semester and the topic that I think is the best is when we learned about was the 19th Amendment. the 19th Amendment was created to give women their rights. Around the roaring twenties there was a big protest called the women’s rights movement which caused women to have their rights granted to them. Before this movement women did have the right to do anything really, they didn’t have the right to vote, they didn’t have have the right to own anything, they could not go out and buy anything because they could not work, and they could not do as they pleased. Women only really had a few jobs and that is stay at the house all day cook, clean, and take care of their husbands. This is why the Women’s
Ancient Greece is a very interesting topic to learn about. It was very mountainous and hard to farm. Their culture was very interesting. They also had many gods and goddesses to explain how things were.
Being an international student, I identified most with the chapter on the cultural sensitivity and diversity of our society. Lately I have encountered various people from different countries with diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. This experience has shaped my view on communication and opened my mind
Reflection is considered as a vital element of professional practice as it precedes to insight and then subsequent change in practice. The hypothesis of reflection is not new as it can be tracked as far back in the 5th century by the influential Greek philosopher, Socrates and to the 1930s primarily focusing on John Dewey’s work. Dewey is one of the founders of learning from experience. He theorised reflection as ‘active, persistent and careful consideration’ (Dewey, 1933) initiated by a specific situation which was opposing, perplexing or uncertain. One of its most common use today is coming up with a thought, an idea, or opinion made or an observation made as a result of concentration, suggesting in essence a way of thinking in which one looks back and meditate upon (Agnes, 2004).
As humans, we make mistakes throughout our lives; blunders that could have been avoided at the commencement. To prevent further plausible outcomes of harming peers throughout my community, I reflect on events that occurred in my recent life. Although, I rarely cause pain toward the peers surrounding me in the community I embody, I hurt a fellow peer while giving constructive criticism on a speech he delivered, I responded with shame feeling regret wishing I should have stated the aspects of the speech he has done well, and parts of the speech that needs to be polished without going straight to the negative points.
“I’m sorry, Molly, but I can’t understand you”, “Can you repeat that for me? “I’m sorry, what?” “It's not _______ it’s ________”. These were the responses that I heard most often while I was learning to speak. When I was younger, I had a hard time communicating. No one could understand what I was saying and I was told that I frequently sounded like I was in a tunnel. These responses were very frustrating as I was learning to speak. I knew what I was trying to say and I was baffled why other people could not understand. My parents were actively trying to find a solution to help me speak more clearly. When my preschool recommended to my parents that I should do speech through Minnetonka schools, my parents decided that I should give it a try.
