Reflection Of My Experience In The Sports Industry

The business of sports is one of the fastest growing industries in the country. All over the world, many people participate as players and spectators in a variety of sporting activities, creating opportunities for the marketing of a company’s goods and services. An important part of the business of sports is sports marketing, which revolves around understanding consumer behavior and motivating target markets to purchase goods and services. Sports marketing at Clemson University has many different aspects ranging from sports and technology and sport law to sponsorship and sports economics.

The path that lead me to choose Sport Management as a major began at a young age where I demonstrated my admiration for sports. I have been participating in sports my entire life and still do to this day. Unfortunately, my time as an athlete will eventually come to an end and I will need to find an occupation that I have passion for. I asked myself the question, “Why not continue my passion in sports”? Being able to work with sports, but not directly in the spotlight, as an athlete is something I would love to be apart of.

The sport management programs boast a business-centered curriculum that touches on topics such as finance, economics, marketing, brand strategy, race relations, human resources and organization behaviors and management. Students who are pursuing a bachelor of arts in sport management will take business and liberal arts prerequisite courses during their freshmen and sophomore years. Students must apply for acceptance into the upper-level program at the end of their sophomore years. Admittance to this program is very selective because it is based on the students’ performance and their demonstrated commitment to sport industry careers. Sport is incredible in how it can increase confidence, self-esteem, and overall health while teaching children a new ability of working with others as a team, taking direction, and doing things they never thought possible. I want to be able to show what sports is capable of teaching and the rewards that come along with it. The concept of team reveals what is achievable through solidarity that would be impossible in solitary.

Of the many classes that I chose to take, my two favorites were an English course and Health course. I may want to be a K-9 Officer, and these have few things in common with that career goal, but they were my favorite courses because of the professors who taught the course. Janice (Meredith) Privott for the English course, and Matthew Harpold for the Health course. These two teachers helped push me to better myself in almost every way. Mrs.Privott helped me on a personal level with stress and trauma; from her support she made me a much stronger person. Mr.Harpold helped me with my self-esteem, he took the time to help me when I needed it, even when I wasn’t in his class, just as Mrs.Privott did.

The teacher and the course assignment that has impacted me the most have both come from my Psychology 2301 class. My teacher’s name was Professor Dalmolin, and I completed my final honors project with her. She was so full of energy and loved to teach. Any question you had, she almost always had an answer, and if she didn’t, she would make sure we didn’t leave the classroom until she looked up the answer and got back to us. This is why I made sure to end my honors journey with her, and I am glad I did. My project was on emotional Intelligence and it involved a lot of medical research (in which I have no interest), and she was very helpful and even found articles on her own time that she thought would be beneficial to my project. At this exact point in time, I am not 100% sure about what segment of the sports industry that I am interested in pursuing for a career. This is actually a question that I have been contemplating for some time now. My plan was to go to graduate school for Sports Management and take the various courses in the program in order to gain an idea about the different areas that I would be interested in working in. I have taken a number of courses and so far, the two areas that I found to be the most interesting are Event Management and Social Media. My family and I attend the PAC12 basketball tournament every year, and seeing all of the different details it takes to put together an event like this are very intriguing to me and is something that I

Athletic programs in college have grown tremendously since they first began years ago, and now some believe that collegiate athletics have no place in higher education. Contrary to this, if one takes a closer look they see that college athletics do play a valuable role in higher education and should continue to play a part in the college experience. Students who participate in college athletics help carry out their school’s traditions, and by competing at such a high level they have the chance to put their school on the map. While competing, these people handle the load of a full-time college student and learn to be responsible and reliable. Some see college athletics as just a business, but truly they provide an opportunity for young adults to compete in the sport that they love, while getting an education and learning lessons that will last a lifetime.

What is the only thing harder than disciplining a dozen ten year olds? Disciplining them on ice! All throughout my life I’ve played sports, and no matter what sport it was, there was always one person who seemed to have it out for me…the referee. The referee is one of the most hated people in the world of sports, but is also one of the most crucial. I grew up with the mindset that the referee was the enemy. Whenever they made a call against me or my team, they were always wrong, no matter how obvious the penalty was. But one day, my whole perspective on referees changed---the day I became a referee.

It includes the front office system in professional sports, college sports, and recreation. Some examples of sport managers are: recreational sport managers, sport marketing, event management, facility management, sport economics, sport finance and sport information. Of course I had dreams of playing professional sport like every other young male in the world but, a wise man spoke to me and he asked me how much my favorite basketball player makes on average, I did the research and Lebron James makes over 300 million dollars annually. Younger me got that information and as expected I held strong on my dreams of being a professional athlete until he showed me 0.0015% of Americans make it into the NBA.”Out of every 10,000 kids playing basketball in high school only 3 will make it to the pros. Note, this doesn’t mean they’re going to stay in the pros more than 5 seconds. This doesn’t mean they’re going to get a sneaker deal and be in a Pepsi commercial This simply means they’ll get drafted.” (Odds of Playing).

I found out that I wanted to pursue a degree in sport management. HPS helped me look into possible career pathways within my major. This class helped me to learn more about future options I may have in sport management that I had never heard of. When I wrote my HPS 101 papers I ended up narrowing the list of possible career options for myself.

     In the wide world of sports, teams will try and find a way to better market themselves in the nation to make more revenue. There are many ways to market your team but in the newer generation teams have been taking a different approach. Most teams will advertise there big sports star in trying to have people buy there gear, buy tickets, or simply support their team. But the most effective way to market your team is getting to the kids first. In advertising for a younger generation, you will tie the kids in more at an earlier age and hopefully will stay with the team throughout the years.

My life has consisted of many sports. Sports has been a part of my life for a while now every since I can remember. The sports I played throughout the years has been baseball, football, soccer, and I ran track. Throughout the years I played these sports has been some challenging times and injuries that have happened to me.
