In this Essay I would like to discuss my observation and give my reflection on the “Community Centre Video” as part of the assessment requirement of 1007HSV Human Services. I will also discuss and consider the location of the agency, the physical appearance of the community centre and how the atmosphere appears to feel in the reception area. One of the first things that come to mind when I viewed the video of the community centre is how little signage that indicated what the building was. The building also looked a little intimidating; there are bars on every window and a security screen door. There were no signs near the bus stop to indicate a community centre is at the other end of the footpath however, having a bus stop so close to …show more content…
If the information was in a chronological order he wouldn’t have gone fare from the start of the service information broachers on the table to find computer course broachers. Most of the broachers were of service and activities that are available from the community centre around families and children. There were community group activities that service uses who want to be more active within community. What I also noticed is that there were no chairs in the foyer area, this means you will have to stand and wait to be seen. The receptionist was very prompt to engage with the customer however. There was no glass barrier between the receptionist and the service user; this gives the reception a more approachable feel. I would understand that if this was a crisis type service for example, homelessness drop in centre or mental health clinic, that safety glass for staff to separate stressed and upset service users would be justified. The receptionist was friendly and clearly new the services that the Community Centre provided, she was very respectful and listened to the questions that were asked of her. I did notice though that there was no way of knowing if she was a service user or a staff member. There was no uniform or badge to say she was employed at the community centre. A uniform can be a separation between the service user and staff and creating a barrier, but it also makes it clear who you can talk to knowing that they
These days’ different organisations are involved and are influencing the system when dealing with social problems. Firstly, the citizen’s individual’s participation to improve the wellbeing of the community. Secondly, the community they may represent the interest of a group, organisation and / or individuals. Lastly, the government they have the responsibility for legislation, social and economic planning, public policy and program, safety and protection of community members, etc. Government agencies invest and deliver services for the community such as: education and employment opportunities; secure, sustainable housing and infrastructure; and good health and wellbeing across the life course. In this report I will be investigating how care services meet the needs of individuals by firstly analysing the needs of an individual using care services. Then I will go on to explain the roles of the care planning process in identifying needs, and explain the features of a positive care practise. After explaining that, I will analysis positive care environments and evaluate how they meet needs before finally explaining the role of legislation in promoting a positive care environment.
My first service-user of the day was Ms A, she is 65 years old. She suffers from depression and also panics attack, clinically obsess. I greeted her with a warm smile, introducing myself as her carer for the day. She responded back with a welcoming smile, I started building warm and friendly and positive communication with her. Already gone through her care plan, I was assessing her and asking her preferred support.
Staff need to understand the service users way of life. Whether that is its religion, choice of food, type of clothing. To understand all this it is vital that the staff read the service users care plan.
Staff grievance procedures are kept in the office and all staff are shown and asked to read these within their induction. Therefore, it is trusted their complaints can be dealt with as quickly as possible. Service users’ families have the right to complain on their behalf or involve an advocacy group.
Before our session is to begin I need to make you aware of the privacy and confidentiality policy of the community center. HIPPA is a law enacted in 1996, to provide privacy standards to safeguard the client or potential client’s medical records and any healthcare information (HHS.gov). Here you have acknowledged you understand the HIPPA law. As a counselor I must follow a code of ethics as outline in the ACA 2104 Code of Ethic, it covers five ethical principles I must abide by respect for Autonomy(clients right to choose their own direction), non-maleficence(do no harm), beneficence ( to do good), justice( act in fair manner) and fidelity (client interest above the counselors) (ACAcounseling.org,2014).
Understanding a community is essential when planning for instruction. My current placement is at Kofa High School which is a located in an urban community –Yuma, Arizona- with an estimated population of 93,000 people. It is fundamental to recognize that Yuma’s population mostly consists of Hispanic and White people. Although English is mostly spoken in this area, Spanish is commonly heard in the community due to the high Hispanic population.

Faith can be defined as a spiritual entity that can shape a person’s confidence. My faith has influenced the young woman that I am today. I characterize myself as a person who is optimistic, intelligent, full of self-confidence, independent, and charismatic. My faith has delivered me through a lot of trials and tribulations. I come from a low income, single parent home, where the sight of Lupus and kidney failure is taking my mother’s life. These circumstances have made Carolina Medical Center my second home; I have celebrated Christmases and birthdays right beside my mother's hospital bed. Even though she is sick, we make time to give back to the community. As a child, I was taught the hard work of volunteering: from working with Operation Christmas Child, feeding the homeless, and volunteering at my church’s annual back to school drive. My journey has encouraged me to want to become a role model for young girls and women. I want to show them that your past does not define you, but the content of your character does. My mission to help young women strongly correlates with the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha

Throughout my life, I have been privileged to know a strong sense of community. My understanding of community has been carved out and shaped by each community that I have been a part of and the subsequent life experiences that I have had by being a part of these communities. To me, community means a sense of belonging with people who have some capacity of like-mindedness. When you belong to a community, you feel like a piece of a larger puzzle that comes together to create a whole. Each community you belong to both influences you, and is influenced by you. Moreover, your belonging to a community generates a sense of unity and shares a common goal, value, or outlook.
On July 18, 2017, I attended the City of Gulfport’s City Council Meeting. The council is made up of elected members of the community whose focus is the city’s goals, major projects and infrastructure improvements. The council makes decisions that range from community growth to land use to finances and strategic planning. Competencies demonstrated during the meeting were Competencies 3 and 5. Competency number 3 focuses on Advanced Human Rights and Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice. The meeting demonstrated knowledge of the ideas and concepts related to the notions of social justice, advocacy, leadership, social change, social support, social networks, and social capital consistent with a MSLC perspective. This competency was demonstrated by addressing community concerns by incorporating ideas of citizens and community leaders. Community leaders such as council members and the mayor provided support and clarification of city policies. The citizens advocated for changes in their community by bringing their issues to the city council for resolutions. Competency 5 focuses on Engaging in Policy Practice. This was demonstrated by advanced skills in social work practice including the ability to link theory, policy-practice, and research/ evaluation, and to employ leadership skills to demonstrate and promote such a linkage. This competency was demonstrated by city council members and the citizens of Gulfport, MS. They worked together to ensure
For the service learning project, I teamed up with three of my classmates to volunteer at a lady’s conference at Imani Restoration Centre church (IRCC) on the 16th of September, 2017. IRCC is a non-profit organization which is a Kenyan community founded that focuses on bringing African immigrants together to support and learn the things of God. Samuel Mwangi, the senior pastor of IRCC, said that through the counseling sessions that he holds at the church every Thursday, he discovered that most ladies go through the same challenges. Therefore, he thought it would be great for him to organize a lady’s conference, so that ladies could come together to share and support each other (Personal communication, September, 16, 2017)
