To get into the Occupational Therapy Assisting program at Rhodes State you have to job shadow 40 hours in two different clinical settings. For my first clinical hours I was job shadowing at a nursing home that had an Alzheimer's wing. A patient we had came from that wing and was acting out. The patient kept telling us that she was going home today, when he or she was never going to go home. He or she kept threatening to walk home, which was over an hour away, if we would not like him or her go. He or she was on a NuStep machine that had a display board on it with numbers. He or she kept telling everyone to come over and read it for him or her. He or she would not stop asking about it so a therapist put blanket over the display. That was
In the daily life of an Occupational Therapy assistant, it consists of the person actually being involved with the patient. It’s a lot of hands on, and it’s very challenging when it comes to your own body, because
I am writing this letter for Ms. Tierney D. Williams who is applying to Occupational Therapy Programs. The student will apply to more than one OT Program. I have only known the applicant for approximately two years. Ms. Williams is a resourceful, emotionally stable, and innovative person. She works well in a group or individual setting. Ms. Williams enthusiastically participated in classroom exercises and discussions. The student was enrolled in two classes that I teach, HLSC 4300-Epidemiology (earned “A” grade) and HCAP 2011-Writing Lab (earned “P” grade).
I do not think that the OT should belittle the OTA as the OTA was probably just afraid they would hurt the child. I do believe that the occupational therapy assistant should have asked for assistance earlier in the therapy if she/he did have concerns. The OT should demonstrate beneficence to the OTA and the patient as it is still a need to be addressed. The OT should explain to the assistant the need of laying prone to and why it is so important to the child. The child may not have the best of insurance and could be on a limited supply of therapy benefits. They could also be so behind in their development just because the assistant was uncomfortable with the tube. This demonstrates justice as it will benefit the child to get the treatment
I hope this email finds you well. I am interested in the M.S. Occupational Therapy program in Hofstra University. Unfortunately due to conflict with my work schedule I would be unable to attend the Occupational Therapy web seminar. I was wondering if it was possible to speak to you or an admissions representative for more information and possible receive advisement.
My roles of occupation in my life are being a student, daughter, sister, and an employee. As this moment, my main role is being student in occupational therapy program. I attend to every single classes with a main purpose that I will receive the knowledge that I need to know in order to get my degree in Occupational Therapy Assistance.
The Occupational Therapy Assistant lab at University of Charleston is unavailable after normal business hours to complete tasks hands on and to work on homework effectively; with no computer lab available for additional knowledge on the subjects, OTA students of University of Charleston is at a hindrance, resulting in tasks being completed off campus. The OTA program is at an educational disadvantage because the main resources are limited to a Monday through Friday schedule, which entitles students to rely on unscholarly articles and websites for information.
Each day clients engage in meaningful and purposive occupations that can be affected by a multitude of incidents that may either support or hinder a client’s ability to function. Traumatic injuries are just one example of incidents that may hinder a client’s occupational performance. Injury can often times lead clients to experience disruptions in their capacities to achieve full occupational performance. Clients who do experience diminished occupational performance can find support through an Occupational Therapist (OT). The OT will utilize a therapeutic decision making process to determine the most appropriate theory along with the client’s knowledge of his or her own needs and wishes to guide therapy. Employing and supporting the client as an advocate for their own needs can allow an OT to determine theories of practice that are best suited for the client’s return to wellbeing. An OT should first attempt to realize the needs and wishes of a client and once an understanding has evolved of what is meaningful to the client the therapist can assess performance skills and patterns that can be addressed by theories developed specifically for OT.
Originally, I first learned about OT through a class at the group home agency I had worked for as a direct support professional. The occupational therapist explained the benefits of sensory interventions, and the importance of leisure and social participation when working with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Since this experience had caused me to switch from special education to occupational therapy, a part of me will always be invested in supporting people with ID.
A practitioner looking to maximize their career should define personal expectations and goals for the affiliation including the desired amount of supervision and style of supervision that would enhance attainment of goals and pair great with the individual’s learning style. Being able to independently seek and participate in opportunities for improving skills is a great way to advance in the field of occupational therapy. It is important during fieldwork to demonstrates consistent work behaviors including initiative, preparedness, and dependability. Every day of fieldwork should be given the best effort because this could potentially become a company that would want the OT practitioner as an employee. This requires the practitioner to consistently maintain professional behaviors in the workplace such as taking initiative, being prepared and dependable, and assuming a professional demeanor.
During my grandmother’s recovery she spent significant time in a nursing home facility. At the nursing home there was a male occupational therapist
Growing up, I have been an individual who has pushed myself beyond the minimum requirements in order to succeed. In high school I excelled in both academics and athletics. I graduated in the top 10% of my class and lettered in hockey and tennis my sophomore, junior, and senior year. I worked hard and put in extra time in order to set myself apart from others. Succeeding in both school and athletics made me a responsible, reliable, and an organized individual. These experiences made me a versatile individual and have given me a work ethic that has benefited me with my academics in college and with my work and volunteer experiences.
As an international student from Taiwan, chances are I already carry different perspectives in terms of what role of an Occupational Therapist is in our daily life or what specialty an Occupational Therapist should possess, let alone the cultural difference. For example, there is a phenomenon, at least in Taiwan, where many people treat medical personnel like a babysitter and lack the ability to distinguish medical personnel’s specialty. As I pursue OT degree with such background, I believe I can enrich the program, and even the entire OT field, by unveiling the issues, taking Taiwan as the reflection, that other countries might undergo likewise or confront someday; the profession can be enhanced by exploring both common and new issues.
Due to their inability to adjust to American culture and traditions, European Immigrants crowded Psychiatric facilities. Mental illness was looked at from the medical perspective and was viewed as incurable, causing individuals to be directed to asylums. Revolutionizing ideas about the causes and treatments of mental illness and deinstitutionalization revived the role of Occupational Therapist in the role of treatment of mental illness. A century later, and though the assistance of occupational therapy in mental health and in the community remain available, still the prevalence in the 18-25-year-old group continues at double the rate of the general population (AOTA). The recovery model emphasizes independence and supports a person’s journey
The entire profession of Occupational Therapy draws on the idea that occupation can be used to alter an individual 's mental and physical well-being. Occupational therapists use occupation as a tool to achieve this. Participation in occupation is believed to be a significant factor in providing a method for individuals to not only promote, but also maintain their health and well-being (Law, Steinwender and Leclair, 1998).
My name is James Xue and I am writing to you as your constituent and as an occupational therapist Assistant Student. occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants help people across the lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations).
