Tell us about a time when you tried to reach a goal or complete a task that was challenging, difficult, or frustrating. What did you learn from this experience? Growing up in California gave me a unique love for the ocean. I was fortunate enough to have a strong relationship with my grandfather who taught me the love for the ocean, along with the pleasure of owning a boat. As a kid, I spent many weekends on his boat for pleasure trips and working in different ways including cleaning, basic maintenance, and complete overhauls. Learning the boat was a big responsibility, was very expensive, but very rewarding. As my grandfather and I grew older the boat eventually went away, but the love for the experience never did. This was a start to …show more content…
I developed a motto for myself and even painted it in my garage saying it out loud to myself: “You have to do the work…” I learned early on that I was alone in the project, sure, I had a friend help every once in a while, but my reality was no one cares, this was mine, and I had to do it myself. The unexpected outcomes were both positive and negative. These outcomes would shape the way I would approach the next small project. There were a lot of lessons learned coming in forms of added time or monetary loss. At times, these lessons were a hard pill to swallow, but I was pushing forward, learning and adjusting my approach, always keep the goal in mind. I learned that everyone had opinions on different parts and ways to do things. Advice was given and I had to learn what was valid and invalid always knowing I needed do what is best for my situation. After 5 years of work, walking miles around a 20’ boat, my big day came, the maiden voyage. I started the boat and began underway hearing a loud bang; my motor was blown and I was dead in the water. I failed, I knew it, and I needed to reconsider my approach. It took a full year to recover from that failure, but I never lost sight of my goal. After another year of work my day came, this would be my triumphed success, I was going to hush my naysayers, and prove it could be done. That day, my family and I spent the day
Describe the most challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
Every so often in life we encounter an opportunity to take a shortcut, to circumvent the traditional path, and attempt to reach our goals without the customary planning, patience, and hard work that invariably goes into any worthwhile endeavor. One such opportunity presented itself in the late summer of 2007, when I was hired to deliver the 38-foot Island Packet cutter Guinevere from Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands, to Bradenton, Florida. By then I had over thirty years’ experience as a licensed captain, ocean yacht master, and certified sailing instructor, and so when I was persuaded to take a shortcut through Passage Key Inlet and ran aground, I immediately realized I should, all along, have trusted my training and instincts.

The Boat is a short story written by Alistair MacLeod in 1968. The story is narrated by a boy when after he has grown up and become a professor at Midwestern university in Cape Breton, east Canada. The narrator reflects on how events in his childhood have shaped the man he is today. He speaks about his family and the cold, frosty fishing community in Nova Scotia they belonged to. There is a somber tone and a presence of sadness, dismay and death throughout the extract. It is told in the first person, which allows for the emotions of characters to be expressed the most precise. This way, themes and symbols of the short story are carried across to the reader better. The narrator recalls his youthful teenage years as the only son, and youngest
Throughout my life, I have been through many different things. I have been through struggles and successes. I have been through multiple setbacks and breakthroughs. There is one specific setback, however that is very important to me that I overcame. It was not easy, but I finally did it. This setback took place during the time between when I entered high school and the end of my sophomore year.
A particular instance I had to conquer happened very recently. In fact, I am currently persevering through it as I write this. A challenge I faced was applying for ASMSA. I needed everything to be pluperfect. There could be absolutely no mistakes, as I absolutely had to get into this school. It would bring a multitude of opportunities, so I couldn't do anything to jeopardize my chances of getting in. My essays had to be the most supreme essays I had ever written. I just had to get into this school.
A time when I accomplished something by continuing to try even when success did not appear imminent was when I thought I was not going to get my varsity letter in Northview Cross country after NLL's even though I did not exactly break 18 minutes and 30 seconds for a 5K. In the NLL race I knew from the start I had to stay relaxed, race people, and not go out to fast so I am not dead after the first mile. So I went out towards to top pack and stayed tough with the other runners as long as I could. When I approached the final 400 meters I did an all out sprint allowing me to pass 3 runners giving me a time of 18 minutes and 35 minutes. I felt proud of this accomplishment and even happier when my coach said "I think you are going to get your

Listening to the symphony of waves, discovering seashells, popping kelp bulbs and making footprints in the damp sand still evoke many of my fondest memories. My inner child playfully emerges to frolic whenever my bare feet find a sandy shore. Sunbathing on a beach towel has never appealed to me. Give me a boogie board, inner tube, surfboard, kayak or sailboat to fill my scrapbook with memories.

In conclusion, I have experienced three noteworthy failures early in my life. Most people thought that based on my failures, I would not be able to succeed in life. However, with the hard work I put into, I managed to overcome my failures and mature into a more responsible person. Based on my ability to
Yet another example of a failure that became instructive was when I tried to tile my bathroom floor. I simply did not want to dish out the big bucks to have a worker do my tiling, which I assumed would be an easy job. I bought the necessary items and dove into the project with an eager do-it-yourself attitude and absolutely no clue about what I was doing. I tried diligently to tackle the task, but in the end, I only managed to get grout everywhere and
