Introduction I believe that doing field experience is very beneficial to students prior to starting the education program, it can help them see what it's like to be a teacher, and even get some experience in a classroom. Completing 20 hours in a classroom, you get to see how you connect to students, what it will be like after you become a teacher, and even help you decide if this is right for you. After my experiences, I learned a lot about my placement school, how what we learned in this class can be really beneficial, and how being in a classroom/becoming a teacher will affect me.
Centennial Arts Academy This semester, I did my 20 observation hours at Centennial Arts Academy with Ms. C. The school is located in Gainesville, Georgia and is apart of the Gainesville City School system. The school focuses on “Arts Integrated Learning with a focus on Performance Arts” (Gainesville City School System [GCSS], 2017). They care greatly about their students and want them all to do well. Each day, at the Centennial Arts Academy they help the students strive to achieve the Four R’s. “The Four R’s are ready, respectful, responsible, and role model” (GCSS, 2017). The school demographics are much different than most schools in Gainesville. This school in particular is a little more than 50% hispanic. As of the 2014-2015 school years there were “488 hispanics in the school out of 960 total students” (National Center for Education Statistics [NCES], 2014). As for race the NCES
During the months of September and October this semester I spent time at two different schools in four different classrooms. Being able to observe different classes and teachers at Westside Junior High and South Live Oak Elementary was a very new and exciting experience for me since I can’t say I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. My experiences at these schools gave me a better insight into the differences between schools, classrooms, and teachers. The purpose of this field experience was to get 10 observation or tutoring hours in an elementary or junior high setting. I chose to observe a
Field experience has shown me many things and has given me pointers on what to do and what not to do in my teaching career. It has shown me the natural talents I have for teaching. Teaching is my dream career and having this experience has only shown me the
My observation for the spring semester was placed at Pine Richland High School. I was able to watch over John Dolphin’s twelfth grade British literature course. John Dolphin has been teaching at Pine Richland for the past eighteen years. I went to observe his class three times. Two out of three of those visits I was able to be at the school all day long to really get the feel of the way it is like to be at the school all day and seeing the difference of his eight classes. Throughout my time there I learned different strategies on how to keep the students involved, the way that a school of this size is ran, and the difference of how John taught compared to my previous observation teacher.
Also within the school is a very diverse group of children with around fifty-seven percent of students identifying as white, nineteen percent identifying as black or African American, and seventeen percent identifying as Hispanic or Latino.
Our current school, Crestview Elementary, is located in Gainesville, Florida. Gainesville is a mid-size suburban community situated in Alachua County, which found in the northern part of Florida. Crestview Elementary has been a part of the Gainesville community for 60 years and served approximately 340 students in grades one through five. The school in located near serval low-income housing apartments, as well as an established housing subdivision. Ninety-seven percent of the student population is served by our free and reduce lunch program. The ethnic makeup of our school includes 90 percent African-Americans, 6 percent Hispanics, and 4 percent whites. Historically our school’s grade has fluctuated between a ‘C’ and ‘D’, with
There is a significant difference in ethnic diversity versus a typical public school system in Georgia. At KC 46.5% of the student population is African American (Kennesaw, GA public school average is 23.2%) 32% of the students are Caucasian, 5.5% Hispanic, 8.5% Asian, 5.6% are at least two races or more and less than 1% of the student population is made up of American Indian or
I love being able to get out of the normal day classroom and just see what a typical day would look like for me. I also really found the field trips very fun. I liked being able to go and see what people are doing as their jobs. I found it helpful because sometimes you only understand jobs from one view point, so being able to be right up and close with the whole process what a great experience for me.
In tenth grade, I moved four hours away from my friends and family to attend a public, residential high school for the arts: the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities (SCGSAH). The school, open to South Carolina students upon audition, offers intense arts study with strong academic classes. Each teacher is passionate about the subjects and students they teach, and every student is devoted to their studies because they truly want to be at school. Despite the intense demands from my academic and arts teachers, I was excited by the level of commitment from both students and faculty and the liberal arts approach to education. When searching for colleges, I chose schools that would continue this liberal arts focus while still
My field experience took place at School for All Seasons in Isanti, MN. I spent some time in both a kindergarten and first grade classroom. This was an exciting time as I got be part of the kindergarten class on the first two days of school and the second week with the first grade classroom. The kindergarten classroom had approximately 18 students and the first grade classroom had approximately 22 students.
I will be able to get a first hand experience of what a teacher does. This will show me the expectations of what an educator must do to really make a mark in the student’s life. For example, I will be able to see what type of lessons are able to engage a student into a lesson whether it be technology integration or art integration. Those type of lessons leave the student remember their best moments in class. This will also help me make a decision of which grade I would like to teach. If I were to visit, I would be able to see all three grade levels and what type of curriculum they are studying. Doing that will easily help me make my choice. Being at the middle school will certainly prepare me for my
In Miami-Dade County, most public schools reflect a school named American Senior High, where the composition is 28 percent Black, 65 percent Hispanic, and a small percentage of White non-Hispanics (McGrory). She adds that the public school population reflects the results of repeated waves of immigration. Based on these figures, one can understand the rationale behind demographers declaring South Florida schools a sign of the nation’s future.
My child 's name is Jude Alexander and he is a male. As a baby he is cautious around new people and situations, but warms up fairly quickly to friendly people. In kindergarten Jude Alexander seemed to have made one or two friends and usually played cooperatively and was sometimes reluctant to join in new activities with unfamiliar children. He performed below average on tests of vocabulary, and the ability to retell a story. He had a real knack for the art projects, and really got interested in the pre-math activities involving working with blocks and geometric shapes. In first through fifth grade he worked cooperatively in groups, usually respects the rights and property of others, and usually demonstrates appropriate peer social interaction. He demonstrates strength in art, all areas of reading, and in spelling and appropriate for the grade level in writing. He needs additional help in the areas of speaking and listening and in the content knowledge of social studies, science and music. He was average in mathematical problem solving, understanding of data, number concepts, graphical applications, and arithmetic computation. In the seventh grade, he consistently contributes to cooperative group activities and respects the rights and possessions of others, and shows age-appropriate social interaction with peers. He demonstrates strength in art, reading, spelling and writing. He was average in math and science, and needs additional
In the word of sociology there are a couple of ways that sociologists are able to collect data. The scientific method is a method that a massive amount of scientist use to acquire data. This method is very clear cut and easily organized, but since sociology is such a diverse and complicated subject many sociologist use and prefer different data retrieval methods. Surveys are one of the most common way to gather data only because they are simple and easy to get done. One of the more exciting ways to gather data is field research. Learning about people and groups is a little hard without first hand experience, but this method doesn't really answer the question “why do people do that?” therefore, field research is not optimal. Another interesting method of obtaining data would be Rodney Rothmans participant observation. This way of collecting data focuses on the researcher joining a group do do various activities, so he can study and research them first hand. Experiments are an extremely effective way to research people. in an experiment researchers can observe an obvious effect to what they did, making this form of data collection practical. Concerns for people's well beings have to be considered when conducting experiments. The last way to collect data on people would be to use a secondary source of information
As I reflect back on my field experience I realize that teaching goes beyond the classroom, it goes into lunchroom, clubs, reading buddies and many more actives that schools offer. With that being said, by volunteering and taking advantage of this opportunities it allows you as teacher to establish closer relationships with students. For instance, when CSI club didn’t meet one week a student came back the following week and said Ms. Crosby I really missed you last week. In this moment I realized how impactful you as teacher can be even when you don’t see yourself in the way. I realized through field experience that students notice you and you soon become a key figure in students’ lives.
The school population consist of 45 % African Americans, 40% Hispanics, 9% whites, 2% other or more races, 1% Asians, 1% American Indians and 1% Hawaii Natives.
