Mankato Pridefest 2017 was the best time of my life. It was September 8th at Riverfront Park in Mankato, MN and went from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Every year at the same time hundreds of LGBT+ people gather together at the park and enjoy a bunch of festivities and be able to be themselves.
I lived in the Mankato area for about 3 years and didn’t really think too much of Pride until last year when my friend dragged me down to the park and we saw all the drag queens removing their makeup and the staff was cleaning up. I realized I missed something amazing and vowed that I would go back the next year. I recently have been struggling with projecting my identity and getting other people to realize who I really am. At Pride, everyone accepted me and my friend got me my own transgender pride flag. When I’m around other people in the LGBT+ community I feel like I don’t have to hide like I do everywhere else.
I only truly got to go because my aunt who lives on the other side of the country was visiting so my mom and I drove up to Mankato to see her. My mom, grandmother, and all my aunts decided to go shopping so I figured I would just walk down to the park from my aunt Julie’ house, which is up my the Home Depot and Menard's, but my cousin, Lindsey, Lindsey said she would drive me and I made it down there around lunchtime. I walked around, looking at everything for a while before I spotted people from my old school in Mankato.
We hung out for a while before I spotted Tori. She
I have been here quite a few times, and it is still always fun to go. My cousins have taken me here before and they took us to the Mall of America. I have been to Mall of America quite a few times too and it is still fun, the log ride is my favorite. When I was at the Mall of America I bought a cookie called the heart attack. It was two chocolate chip cookies with frosting smothered in the middle. It was the best cookie I had ever eaten. While I was at Minneapolis I went to a Vikings game. When I was at the vikings game we sat in the front row on the twenty yard line. A different time when I was in Minneapolis, I went to a Twins game. I got an autograph of C Fresco. While at the game, I got a big helmet with a Twins logo on it, and it had nachos that came in it. They were really
I received a moderate score of 27 for assertiveness and-and 42 for my level of responsiveness and this information suggests that my social style is amiable according to mapping my results. In general, assertiveness can be defined as a person’s ability to make appeals, actively disagree express positive and negative personal feelings, and stand up for themselves without criticizing another person (Beebe & Mottet, 2016). Likewise, responsiveness is the capacity to be sensitive to the communication of others while being seen a good listener in order to make others comfortable in communicating. There are various ways to respond to others as well as steps that I can use to style flex. Upon sharing my scores with my co-worker, her perception of the results seemed somewhat accurate and she offered suggestions about my social style. Furthermore, there are manners that my social style may affect my listening skills and ways that I can improve as a listener. Also, style flexing can assist with communication effectiveness in different manners.
Then we went back to my aunt’s place and got ready to do some shopping for our new apartment. My aunt drove us to Walmart and then took us to Macy’s. I was amazed to see size of Walmart the first time. Also it
In Chapter One of The Humble Essay Roy K. Humble starts out by saying that the purpose of the college essay is to explain an opinion of the writer, and that the opinion must be reasonable. Humble then tells about commonly misunderstood terms such as thesis, thesis statement, and topic. The thesis is the main idea of an essay, the thesis statement is a written sentence that articulates the thesis, and the topic is the subject of an essay. Next he talks about what a college essay really is, and then goes on to say exactly what it is not. A college essay gives information about a given topic, provides an opinion about that information, and explains both of them. The following examples are types of essays that are not college essays and pertain
I've helped personal friends cope with homophobic parents and I've helped students who I barely know figure out how to share their sexuality with their loved ones. Being a role model and a confidant is extremely rewarding, I am happy to provide support to those in the LGBTQ community who are struggling. On even broader terms, my presence reminds people that coming out doesn't have to be scary. Sure it's daunting at first, but there are plenty of supportive students and teachers in the community. I have a very large group of friends and acquaintances, all of whom are very supportive of me and aware of my sexuality. My friends view me as a positive LGBTQ role model who is willing to support others struggling, especially those struggling with their
Growing up is a journey we all have to travel. Everyone makes their own paths on an adventure of change. Along the way, the path will be beautiful and smooth-sailing, bumpy and rough, and sometimes conflict will appear out of the blue. At times forks in the road will show up and decisions must be made. Change is inevitable. Throughout a lifetime decisions made will be small and slight, or huge and major. It does not matter because one decision can change one’s path completely. Even the slightest change can make the difference. The decision could even be a change of hairstyle. A change in hairstyle could lead to a new fashion sense, to a new genre of music, to a completely new person. I myself have noticed many differences and similarities between my middle school self and now; and it is only the beginning.
As an active member of the LGBTQIA+ community at DePaul and at home, I know quite a few trans* people, or at least more than most, and the one thing I am most concerned about is being a good ally. I’m embarrassed to say that only since arriving at DePaul I’ve begun to look more into how any of my words or actions may come across as hurtful or as microaggressions. I’ve had issues with my gender identity in the past, primarily because the concepts of masculinity and femininity are so antiquated and subjective, but I truly have no way of understanding the depth of oppression that people of the trans* community experience. The expression of my gender is fairly inconsistent and many people have labeled me androgynous and I have considered agender (someone whom identifies as being without gender) but I’m fairly comfortable (not perfectly) with my current identification. So everything from gender misidentification and discrimination due to the fact that I no longer repress myself by dressing and presenting myself in an overly feminine way has led to some really crappy stuff. Regardless, I have had so many benefits and rights granted to me simply because of my cisgender status to the point where it made it difficult for me in the past to see them. People usually use my correct pronouns without asking, I have bathrooms available to me, going to get medical help isn’t a production in which I have to be concerned about
This summer, in the first week of August, we went to Brighton, Michigan. I along with my grandma Sharon, my same age uncles: Logan and Cole, and my brother Hayden were all going. At 10:30 AM we left, getting into her in her car piling our stuff in. This consisted for me of 3 books, a deck of cards, a stick of deodorant and a few changes of clothes. I finished the first book, Rangers Apprentice The Lost Stories, about three hours down the road and halfway through it we stopped at the Iowa I-80 truck stop, the world's largest truck stop, for lunch. After that I talked with Cole for another two hours. We stopped at a rest stop just out of Chicago and stretched out our legs. from there it was a straight run up into Michigan and from there into
We should show and be proud of who we are because we only have one life to live and we shouldn’t waste it by hiding it behind a big wall of fake. I take part in my school's GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) club which was made by a fellow band member who found out that they were transgender. This particular person has been a role model for me because they didn’t hide who they were. He made that change for him, not anyone else. Even if his family didn’t like it, he still made that choice to be who he is. He surrounded himself with people who accepted him and is living the life he was dealt.
My whole family jerked forward and as we realized there was nothing in front of the driver. After the stressful drive we finally arrived at the Mall Of America. The parking there was packed but as we drove into the first and closest parking lot someone was backing out so we got really lucky. When we walked into Kohl's, a store connected to but not part of the Mall Of America, we had no clue where we were going so we walked around for a while as my mom and my sister, Bridges, looked at clothes. Finally we saw a sign that said, “Welcome to the Mall Of America.” I was really excited when I saw all the huge roller coasters and stores. The first thing my two brothers, Roy and Tiges, ran by the lego store and we were in there for about a half an hour. We got something to eat and we went to our hotel at four when our room was open. When we got there right away we went swimming and then got pizza at a pizza place connected to the hotel. We went swimming after the pizza and watched the Wisconsin game. We went to bed at about nine or ten and woke up at about
Growing up in Aspen Colorado it is an extreme understatement to say that I was sheltered. Aspen in itself is a very liberal town that celebrates and welcomes difference to be apart of our community. During ski season, there is an entire week dubbed by the locals as ‘Gay Ski Week’ in which members all over the country and apart of LGBTQ community come to our town to enjoy its beauty, skiing, and above all further educate and advocate our area about their community. There are comedic acts, panels, and even a drag fashion show in which the contestants ski down the mountain as if it were a runway.
AFA wishes to remind our Members that June is the month designated to observe Gay Pride, and to encourage everyone to come together under the umbrella of tolerance, diversity, and inclusion. "Gay Pride" began as a reaction to discrimination, violence, and hatred leveled against a segment of our society simply because they were perceived to be "different" from the rest of the population. History is littered with instances of injustice, bigotry, and hatred toward people of all kinds, due to ignorance and intolerance. Your AFA is an organization that enthusiastically promotes inclusionary practices as well as celebrating the diversity of the human race. We believe everyone is entitled be treated respectfully and in a dignified manner regardless of race, creed, color, gender, beliefs, or sexual orientation. The LGBT community has suffered discrimination and social stigmatization in the past, prompting them to develop the Gay Pride Theme as a positive way to combat injustice and discrimination, as well as to promote their self-affirmation, their dignity, and as a platform to fight for their rights, as deserving members of the human family.
Americans should be able to stand and show pride for their race and not be criticized on media or in person. Many people have different ways to show their pride for their race like kneeling in between the anthem like Colin Kaepernick or turning their back, which should not be anything to be criticized about it is just a way of expressing yourself . According to Tommie Smith, a Olympic Runner in 1968 ''I support him because he's bringing the truth out-regardless of how done.'' Many people actually support Kaepernick's decision which is not a bad thing because they know why he does what he does, not like other people who just criticize because it seems like he is insulting a flag that is ''sacred''. Standing up for something that you believe
My my cousin Zack, his girlfriend at the time Skylar, Zack’s mom, my second mom, my amazing and caring mom Becky, my very good friend Amber and I went to the cities for a weekend to go shopping and watch some Team ND Hockey. After a long day of stressful hockey games and going into double overtime Zack’s team ended winning that game and moving into the championship game held the next day at 8:ooam, yes 8:00 in the morning, killer right? Since his game that day was at noon and got over around 2:00 we had the whole day to do what every girl does best, shop. Oh and if you are Zack this is what he does best also. It wasn’t that nice out but we didn’t care because all we wanted to do was go shopping. It was the last weekend in September so it was
