DESCRIPTION
Time management is a tool that will aid in becoming a successful student. Time management starts with setting SMART goals. A SMART goal is Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, and Time-based. Once SMART goals are in place use calendars to get organized. Keep a monthly calendar somewhere it can easily be seen to write down goals or deadlines. A whiteboard is one suggestion for a monthly calendar. Colors or symbols can be used on the calendars to quickly show what is urgent and what can be delegated. Use a weekly calendar and schedule class, study, work, and social time. When making a weekly calendar follow the rule one hour of lecture time equals 2 hours of study. Following this rule would give a person with 5 classes 30 hours of study time. The calendar created with the schedule will help to create a task list. A task list consists of things that need to be done now and things that can again be delegated. Setting small goals by month, week and then by the task are the main tools to get organized using time management.
IMPACT
Learning about time management in EPS class was very informative and helped me immensely. I now better understand exactly what time management is and how it affects me as a student. I thought that I was an organized individual, but discovered through this assignment I need some work on my discipline and organization skills. It is said that “Time and Tide waits for none”. As an upcoming college freshman I need to understand the value of time to succeed in life. I have to understand that everything needs to be prioritized no matter the case. That being able to manage my time correctly will teach me discipline which is exactly what I need to get through college with the goals I have set for myself. Individuals who stick to a time plan are more likely the people who realize their goals and objectives within the shortest possible time span. This will help me get my work done before the deadline instead of working on it the night before.
Time management techniques are essential to living your life more efficiently. Many people spend their days in a frenzy of activity but achieve very little because they are not concentrating on the right things. By using time management skills, you can learn to determine which of the things you do are important, which can be dropped, use your time in the most effective way possible, break down the roadblocks that waste it, and increase the effectiveness.
This piece of reflection will focus on my progress and experiences during my placement in Campbelltown Hospital Medical E ward. I will be using the Gibbs 1988 model of reflection (Gibbs, 1988). Primarily, before I was able to use my time management skill to benefit my academic success as a student at Miami this term, I had to follow certain procedures. The first thing I did in the beginning of this semester was that I created a, To Do, list to help me identify a few items and the reasons for doing them. I create these lists every Sunday to guide me through my weeks of school. The first thing in the list is to make sure I go to sleep on time, so I can wake up on time and arrive on time in class every day. When I first evaluated myself in the study skill academic test, time management was my weakest skill overall. This was priority in terms of skill development because I would always leave things till the last minute and stress myself out trying to turn in things on time. In order to improve this I made a smart goal to carry out in the beginning of the year. Now after some time, the results of my progression are shown. My smart goal that I created for myself regarding my time management planned out very well, I was able to successfully accomplish a majority of my assignments on time. I would review the material of the week on Monday’s and compile all of the assignments due for the week. The monthly calendar was also a key factor in helping me keep up to date in the month so see what where upcoming tasks the following week.
