One individual can change the world with a well-written essay. Essays are the combination of 26 letters to make words that form sentences and then paragraphs in a structured form depending on the style of writing. I have been fascinated with writing since elementary school. Writing has been my outlet for many years and something I have enjoyed. As time progressed, lost the time to sit down and write, but during the course of ENGL 1101, I have had the time for my favorite hobby in the present. I have learned many new techniques to better my writing and became a more successful student in the course of ten weeks. The first week of my online class was a complete disaster. Not only was I intimidated by the syllabus, but also, I was scared that I was going to struggle. The ten week course while taking 14 other credit hours seemed like a bit much, but I was up for the challenge. My first assignment did not go as planned. The website to properly send in completion was messing up, and I ended up not following directions by sending the instructor each grade individually instead of sending all grades at once. From the first week, I began to think I was not going to be able to complete the summer session. Eventually, I made a time schedule to make sure I had time for …show more content…
My ability to write more effective sentences has been my biggest improvement throughout the course. I have had trouble at times with verb usage, but after some productive criticism and book references, I have improved. My grammar has also improved during the last ten weeks. Now when I proofread my essays, I look for sentence fragments. The use of second person, which has costed me valuable points on my essays, is also something I make sure to double
My writing experience about the career paper was more informative than I was expecting. By reading the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH), I quickly realized that there was so much information about a career in medicine, I was not aware of especially with regards to employment and predicted employment rates. However, the most difficult part of the writing process was trying to incorporate personal information into the narrative while using statistics and descriptions from OOH to come up with a coherent essay. For example, with a plethora of personal information and details about factors that has motivated me to pursue a career in medicine, it was difficult to summarize and incorporate information from OOH into my
I immensely struggled when writing. Taking my scrambled thoughts and uncoordinated analysis and converting it into clean and understandable words on a page was arduous. I could not express my thoughts in proper academic format. I understood the importance of writing to every subject. It was essential that I learn to condense my ideas and feeling into coherent written word. After much debate, I decided that the best way to improve my writing skills was to take an advanced English course.
Writing is a practice that most of us were taught when we were young. We were taught the basics of grammar, how to form a sentence, conjunction words, how to write paragraphs and more. Although we have learned this skill while growing up and have used the skill every year after entering kindergarten, this does not mean our writing process will ensure the best work. The authors that I chose each encourage their audience to excel in the art of writing in their own way to help with the writing process.
Over the past semester my writing has improved in three specific areas: extending the length of my writing so that it is more than just 300 words per piece of writing. Clarifying and giving my writing more detail so that it is easier to understand and follow. And finally by improving my spelling and punctuation throughout my piece instead of just spell checking the first few paragraphs.
I’ve always felt that my writing could use improvement in several areas including grammar, punctuation, style, and tone. My writing included emails, memorandums, and police reports, which went against proper use of grammar. Often times the words were abbreviated and no punctuation were included when the reports were transcribed. I recently started writing college level papers again, as I have not taken any college courses since 1998. I have occasional trouble with proper usage of punctuation, and placement of commas. I think I’ve seen tremendous improvement for my first paper that I wrote this February; however I do occasionally struggle in this area. Occasionally my style of writing seems to be biased, and at times I force my point during my arguments. Lastly, the tone of my writing can often be misinterpreted as controversial, and argumentative. Most of the information about my
Most of us were in a situation when we had to say: “I am not too good at it.”, or “I can try, but it is not my field”. For example, somebody will ask me to draw a picture of a cat. I will try. I have seen cats before, know how to operate a pencil, have a flat piece of paper. I am even passing by art gallery on the regular basis, on my way to work. But I still cannot be sure you will not mistake my picture of a cat for a picture of a tractor or an intergalactic battlefield scene. That is how I feel about assignment to write about my writing process. So far, mine I can divide in three steps.
Starting a piece of writing has always been tough for me. There are times when I have spent an hour trying to figure out how I should start my writing. Now that's partly because of procrastination but main due to the fact that the intro to any piece is writing, in my opinion, is the most important aspect of any form of writing.
When it comes to organization, I had some ability making sure that my writing flowed and seemed coherent, but I had trouble making sure that the organization was the best it could be and allowed readers to fully understand what I was writing about. Coming in to the class, I knew how to piece an essay together so that the writing seems like it makes sense and the reader can follow it without getting lost throughout.
Essay have never been my strong suite. This semester however, my writing ability has improved. My progress is evident when I look over my assignment five essay and see the mistakes highlighted. These mistakes are what I now look for while editing my work. I am still improving with every piece of writing I create, but I revise differently by looking specifically for my weaknesses. I have been successful in my attempts because I do not make the same mistakes as I used to. I now use more resources than I previously did to embellish my writing process. The combination of these changes has greatly improved my final pieces of writing.

Throughout my academic career, I haven’t given writing much of a chance. Instead, I gravitated towards math and science subjects. I believed that writing wasn’t one of my strengths, which caused me to not enjoy past composition courses. This opinion changed during my writing process for “Strategic Devices,” my rhetorical analysis of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail. As I analyzed the skillfully crafted letter, I was reminded of how powerful writing can be, and, when used for good, words can transform the situation that they are spoken into. In English 121, I have learned many new aspects of writing, grown as a writer, and developed a fresh perspective towards composition. Through this progress, I hope to become a positive impact in my sphere of influence.
Over the course of my studies at university, I have grown and learned more about academic writing and numerous writing styles. I believe there is so much room for me to master my writing skills to succeed and complete my degree and improve my academic writing and personal skills through more practice. However, I have become concerned with my first attempt submitting my piece of paper through the online test in the Writers’ Diet diagnostic tool and was labelled ‘flabby’ in my writing. Analysing my errors and referring to the textbook ’Communication Toolkit’ by Grellier and Goerke (2014), also submitting my piece of writing to Grammarly and paper rater I was able to measure my weakness in the area of sentence structure, punctuation and grammar.
I can recall my first writing assignment after being out of school for a significant amount of time, feeling nervous, and excited at the same time. I had no clue on how to begin the process of writing, or even how to construct my sentences correctly to target the audience that I was trying to reach. However, I feel that I have made a significant improvement in my writing skills. The reading the literature in all three unit lessons is such a tremendous help. Also, I like the fact that I can print the information and refer to it at a later date, should I need it in the near future.
Before this semester, my essay writing would have been considered rather poor. This was because I did not understand the various components of a properly written and accompany them to effectively communicate my ideas. I lacked the most in keeping the audience involved hence, catching and maintaining their attention, to my writing from the introduction to the conclusion. To me, writing was more complicated than a speech since a speech involved direct audience who the speaker can gauge their feelings. I took writing as a difficult task since it involved indirect audience and ensuring that I meet the demands of such indirect audience, brought more confusion. Though the case, this past semester’s class has really improved my skills in writing. I have learned to to make an effective written piece. Through the various learning experiences such as individual readings, professional feedback and many others, I have been able to interact with diverse knowledge sources which have made me much better by removing the confusion and negative picture I had with regard to writing.
This fall semester in ESL 91has been pretty interesting, and so far successful. The main object of this semester was to improve our essay writing. We were taught various lab techniques that helped us to improve our English writing skills, such as using appropriate verb tense and how to write a research paper with a works cited. Through my work on the research paper I have learned how to write in an academic style, how to find appropriate sources from an academic database, and how to cite my sources. Most of all, I can say that my reading skills have improved because the research for our papers required me to do a lot of critical reading.
