Group Experience
Overall through this course I began to learn what I didn’t know about groups. Being a consistently good group leader would most likely take years to begin to master. There are so many things to take into consideration. I have learned a few skills that I personally need to work on to become a better group leader. These skills are based off what the teacher and classmates gave me as feedback. These skills include knowing when to focus on individual members and how to deepen that focus. Besides these things, I didn’t receive much constructive criticism, but I didn’t feel too comfortable overall with being the group leader. After the experience within class, I believe I will be more comfortable when leading a group in the workforce. Besides my own experiences, I learned through other group leaders and saw how they used skills.
In this class an immense amount of learning occurred. We learned everything from what makes a good group leader to what group dynamics are considered most therapeutic. In my group, I had the pleasure of witnessing first-hand what positive group dynamics were. I learned what an optimal group would look like, as far as a growth and support group goes. This will aid me in future practice as I have a standard or goal of what positive group dynamics are. It’s a lot easier to reach a goal, once you know what it is. More specifically, my group exemplified a non-judgmental zone in which all members could safely share thoughts and information for
What is groupthink? There is a simple definition for it, but is it truly that simple? The term groupthink refers to the inclination of group members to have the same opinions and beliefs; it frequently leads to mistakes. It often occurs without an individual being aware of it. Conflict is considered to be a harmful element when related to groups, but conflict is good when considering groupthink because it helps to eliminate the existence of a groupthink. The explanation sounds simple enough, but it is more complex than the description given.

In this paper I will describe and analyze my experience working in a group situation, writing a paper on the movie 12 Angry Men. I will address therapeutic communication techniques used in our group situation. I will address any conflicts that arose in our group. Utilizing Tuckman’s group process theory, I will also address the effectiveness of our group process.

Throughout this entire course we have learned many concepts and strategies to synthesize and use leadership as a means of working in a group setting. These concepts allowed us to learn not only how to lead other
From my experience, one situation I can think of where the “groupthink” phenomenon could be applied happened when I used to be a scribe/scribe trainer. Our leads had just hired a new group of scribes and prior to starting on the floor the trainees needed to complete a classroom training course covering medical terminology, understanding of the EMR template and then pass an examination. After that then they were able to start training shifts on the floor with an experienced scribe “shadowing” them. The first time scribing on the floor can be really daunting because some providers work very fast and they can be very particular (quality/length of HPI, what& where to document certain findings) which as a newbie you wouldn’t know unless you worked
As I began the Group Process and Dynamics course, I was excited to become educated and experienced with group counseling. Group counseling is a topic I have enjoyed in the past and have continued to be fascinated by. I have learned the elements of a group process through observation and research. The group process consists of several elements that come together when the group begins and ends when the group is terminated. I have observed group norms, group cohesion, the generation of trust, the manifestation of resistance, the emergence of conflict and resolution, healing forces, the reactions of group members, and the various stages a group develops through (Corey, Corey, & Corey, 2010). Throughout this course, I was able to derive a conceptualization of groups. From this course I will take with me the understanding of how effective group counseling can be for individuals. Groups have been known to be as effective as individual therapy and a great source of treatment. Group counseling is designed as a part of a treatment plan that helps individuals and guide them through change. Group counseling is a versatile practice, which can be used in several settings and with different populations (Corey et al., 2010). This course has given me the opportunity to reflect on my own personal leadership style, the challenges that may arise, and an action plan to continue my group leadership knowledge and skills.
My most significant learning experience this month included becoming familiar with facilitating a group that is not psychoeducational. One group that I recently started facilitating requires more preparation than the previous psychoeducational group I had grown accustomed to. On February 10, 2016, I started facilitating a new group and during this group, participants are expecting me to have the answers to specific questions they have. Through facilitating this group, I have had the opportunity to understand the true essence surrounding of group dynamics I have learned that each group facilitator has a different style of leading, and each participant has different elements they bring to the group as well. In addition, it is beneficial to grow professionally and have new responsibilities within an agency.
An important part of our learning and growing experience must stem from our ability to analyze and reflect upon the groups that we have been members in. This reflection can define our understanding of the weaknesses both in ourselves and in the others within our group; and it can help to shape the way that we act in future groups. Adjusting ourselves to compensate for our weaknesses, based upon an honest and thorough examination of our actions within a group setting, is one of most important thing for any person to do. It is only through this evaluation that we can improve ourselves and our interactions with others. This paper will examine a group that was required to make an important decision about adding a new member
As people, when confronted with a problem where a solution must be found, our ideal situation is to come up with the best possible one. To do this, we ideally gather the most knowledgeable, intelligent individuals into a group and attempt to derive the best solution to the problem. With the collection of these people, one would think that finding the best possible answer to the problem would be a rather simple task. However, what has happened in many situations is the complete opposite. Rather than finding the best possible solutions, many ideal, cohesive groups arrive at the worst possible answer largely due to problems in communication within the group. This is what we call the radical theory of
Each individual is categorized into a group from the day they were conceived. According to Kozier et al (2010) a group is “two are more people who have shared need and goals, who taken each other in account in their and who, thus, are held together and set apart from others by virtue of their interaction” (p. 400). The communicate that takes place between members of the group is group dynamic (Kozier et al, 2010). Motivation for participation and similarity of other group members and the goals of the group will affect the group dynamic (Kozier et al, 2010). The type of group that was created was a task group and Kozier et al (2010) stated that “the focus for such group is completion of a specific task, and the format is defined at the
Chapter conclusion: Benefits for employees are very important for companies. Benefits for employees include various insurance plans, paid vacation days, paid sick leave, paid days off, etc. Different companies need to establish different benefit plans based on their company conditions. In brief, benefit in one of the bridge between employers and employees.
I used to believe that I did not perform very well in groups. I am an observer who likes to learn alone. I thought I learned best when I worked on my own. Even though I always knew group work had many positive values, I was more comfortable with the lecture-based approach and resisted group work merely because it involved change, not because it had a collaborative learning approach. However, during the learning community project, I came to realize that I learn more effectively when I work in groups. Working in a group was like an adventure for me; there were both exciting and challenging times while preparing for the learning community project.
In conclusion, this class has changed my perspective about working in a group. Since my prior experience with groups was so unsettling, I believed that all groups were going to be the same. However, this class has made it possible to believe that there are groups that respect and take into consideration other members’
The PowerPoint for last class really summarized what I have been learning for my interviewing and counseling skills class. There are so many aspects to focus on as a counselor. One has to learn active listening skills, pay attention to body language, ask the right questions, not give too much advice, become a good observer, etc. I have focused so much on using theses skills for the first time that I have not realized that these can be used in different ways. In a classroom, one does not get to have the opportunity to talk to everyone because of multiple reasons, on the other hand, when on is working in a small group allows us to get to know each other and have easier access to each other. When my group and I worked on the group project we had our difficulties. One of the group members was confused on their part and did not ask for help until the last minute. I was able to help this person but it’s difficult for me to have an assignment due soon, and still not have all the information together. However, we got our work done and we all did a good job presenting our part. Every one emphasized on their part and I was proud to be their group member. There were three topics that we all felt were necessary to talk about so we combined two of them and we were excited for it. Were grateful because we had class time to work on the project because our schedules collide with each other. Unless we could reserve a day, than it would have been harder for us to link our ideas together.
