My second year as a second grade teacher has been full of changes. This year, administration has changed the way that reading would look for second grade. Now, my students switch to four other teachers for the whole reading block whereas last year I had my class for the entire reading block. The group of students who I teach during reading range from DRA 20-28. These students are either on or above grade level in reading. For that reason, I am only responsible for the reading instruction of transitional and advanced readers.
One student who has made increasing strides since the end of her first grade year is Layah. This fall, she increased by 5 reading levels which has her currently reading at a DRA level of 20. From observing Layah in small group reading instruction, she has shown a positive attitude towards reading for the simple fact that she tries her best to attack any difficult text that is placed in front of her. Her growth in reading stems from reading over the summer as well as reading every night for homework. During my observation, I noticed that Layah was trying to read the text used for whole group instruction. Although she did not know every single word, she looked for words that she knew within the difficult word. Furthermore, she found some blends and digraphs that we had reviewed this past week. I used a blends and digraphs game as a formative assessment for each one of my reading groups. Currently, Layah has an A in reading and oral/written communication.
The student I worked with is in 5th grade. We did a DRA on a story called “Cry Foul”. This is a great assessment to assess a student’s reading ability in order to enhance his or her literacy achievement. I learned many things about my student that he likes to read adventurous books and books regarding sports. He wants to become a better reader by enhancing his understanding and vocabulary of the text. It’s also a bit difficult for him since English is his second language and a year ago he was taking ESL classes. It’s amazing that he has great goal settings that determines that he wants to become a better reader. The things that I observed about the student is that his oral reading is fluent since he had about three miscues in which one was
An important variable in a student’s reading ability is their knowledge and use of various reading strategies such as inferring, questioning and evaluating (Paris, Wasik, & Turner, 1991). Initially Dana should work specifically on monitoring/clarifying while she reads, she seems to understand when something doesn’t make sense and she should be taught how to fix her reading when it doesn’t such as backing up to re-read, cross checking and checking for
As I worked with my group, which consisted of the lowest in 6th grade (below basic), I developed strategies of my own based on what I was hearing from my students reading. I turn to research and we practiced questioning, summarizing and predicting while reading the text. We used the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) to measure our data. We had a base line test, a mid-period test and then a final test to measure the outcome. Data at the mid-period showed that my students’ growth was on track to reach the goal and had surpassed the other teachers who taught the basic and below basic reader.
It’s kind of crazy how stories you read can bring so many mental pictures in your mind of things you can relate to it. In Bobbie Ann Mason’s story, “Being Country”, I related very well to the country style of living. I, myself, lived in a very small country town in Texas, and know people just like the “country people” noted in Mason’s story.
I tutored a struggling reader in Kindergarten. In this paper, I will refer to the student as “Sue Elle” and the school as “ABC Elementary” for confidentiality purposes. Sue Elle is a 5-year-old girl who lives with her mother, father, and her two older siblings. She did not attend preschool before entering Kindergarten. She spent most of her preschool years with her grandmother. In comparison to the class, she tends to perform at the lowest level amongst her peers. Currently Sue does not receive any academic support. The teacher believes that she can become a better reader, however, she is concerned about Sue’s lack of letter and sound recognition.
The text suggest we do not spend enough time providing struggling readers the instruction/intervention they need to catch up. The books suggest a daily two, 30-minute expert tutorial or very small group lesson for these struggling readers.
What does reading like a writer mean? I can state the obvious and assume there's reading involved but what else is it? After researching articles along with class discussions, I've found that reading like a writer is being involved with the text. There is interaction involved when reading articles, which includes steps or strategies in order to find information and ideas in authors writing. In this essay, I will be discussing what the steps are and why they are important. One strategy used for interacting with the text is analyzing it, unlike reading in general where you read for its contents, this differs. When reading like a writer you're analyzing the structure of a text. For example, if an author starts a paper off with a quote, you could attempt to analyze what point the writer was trying to make but; ultimately we won't know unless we asked the author ourselves. Instead of doing this we can question what effect the technique had on us.For example, did that quote lead you to a conflict, set a certain emotion on you, etc. Analyzing the effect can help you understand their claim, or give you an idea of what the article will be about. Essentially analyzing a text is looking for writing techniques used in an essay
Most of the other students in her 2nd grade classroom are able to read classroom text and complete work independently. They also read books for enjoyment on their own. The reading time in her classroom consists of a block during which the teacher works with small groups and the children are expected to work quite independently when they are not working directly with the teacher. The class uses a trade book format and this is utilized across the curriculum. Students are provided with short skills building lessons in large and small groups. Most of the time spent during explicit reading instruction is targeted to helping students develop reading fluency.
1. According to Grossman, the “virus of violence” is referring to the increase of murder, attempted murder, and assault rates in not only America but many places around the world. Although the population has been increasing, both the assault and murder rate are significantly high. Grossman quotes, “Today, both our assault rate and murder rate are at phenomenally high levels. Both are increasing worldwide” (Paragraph 6) Then he continues giving examples of the rising assault and murder rates in different parts of the world. For example,” In Canada, according to their Center for Justice, per capita assaults increased almost fivefold between 1964 and 2002, attempted
I realized that my literacy handicap that I had about a year ago had finally started to improve when I thought it would not be improving at all. From the reading point of view, I just imagined every story in my world, in which I am a side character of some aspect being a first-person resource within the story. As I progressed throughout school I would consistently use this same method for every story. The only time this would become a problem would be if the author would be speaking about their own opinions and thoughts on a subject or a certain idea at hand. In which in that point I try and hold my opinions to the side and put myself into their shoes and create a mental state of mind that they are in during the creation of this writing piece.
In my Summer Reading Essay, I see many skills I could improve on and many things that I need to continue in further essays. The first thing I struggled with was MLA format, specifically the heading, and the header. So while writing this essay, I took another try at completing the heading, and header. When rewriting my essay, I will double check to make sure I include the proper format; I can access the format by looking it up on the internet. Another thing I struggled with, was the simple formatting techniques including underlining the title of the novel, and center the title of the paper. I practiced centering the title when writing this reflection piece, and I can score better on my next essay on this formating by remembering to check formating,
My life as a reader has been like a rollercoaster, I had ups and downs. There had been times where I would read regularly and my reading level would go up and there had been times where I completely stopped reading and my reading level dropped drastically.
Throughout my time writing at the City College of New York, I experienced a slow and dramatic transition to my first semester of this college course. During that time, I've learned from several feedback and lessons from certain peers and my professor. Because of the strict comments written in my drafts by my professor, a few helpful suggestions to include in my writing, and a few miserably failures, I was able to see how my writing and habits have changed during the duration of this course. Back in high school, I was always comfortable writing only five paragraph essays (Introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion), but I've never expected to write something more complex. Here, I was encouraged to include as much detail as I can instead of writing something vague
Writing has always been something I dread. It’s weird because I love talking and telling stories, but the moment I have to write it all down on paper, I become frantic. It’s almost as if a horse race just begun in my mind, with hundreds of horses, or words, running through my mind, unable to place them in chronological order. Because I struggle to form satisfying sentence structure, it takes me hours, sometimes even days, to write one paper. It’s not that I think I’m a “bad writer,” I just get discouraged easily. Needless to say, I don’t think highly of my writing skills. When I was little I loved to both read and write. I read just about any book I could get my hands on, and my journal was my go to for my daily adventures. Although it’s
I wouldn’t say that I am a good writer, and I really don’t like to read books either. Through my years in school I became literate in these two categories. I was and still am not interested in writing, or reading books in my spare time. The only writing I have ever done is for school. Writing just does not interest me, and the only reading I do out of class is reading about sports in magazines, or reading the news, or looking at web pages. I have only read a couple of books on my own, 95% of all the books I have read have been for school. The reason for not writing out of class is probably attributed to the fact that I am a very impatient person, and I have a short attention span. I have no interest in writing and reading so when
