Service learning helps us to gain knowledge from the experiences we received while serving somewhere. I was fortunate enough to serve in both Buddha Mind Monastery and the Islamic Center, where I learned about key aspects of Islam and Buddhism while involving myself in interfaith works.
When entering Buddha Mind Monastery, my initial thought was that the building was beautiful and impeccably clean. Never would I have thought that I was wrong on the latter. First, the Abbess talked briefly about her place in the monastery and gave us a mini tour of the building, describing Buddhist practices and mentioning the different Buddhas since the beginning. We had the opportunity to meditate a few different ways, both sitting and walking. After our meditation session, a Shifu split us up into small groups to complete the tasks around the building that needed to be done before their big event in the upcoming week, the visit of the Abbot. My group’s first task was to line the meditation room with chalk for chairs to be lined in there; this task was incredibly confusing, and we were eventually moved onto a different task. Two other tasks I performed that day were cleaning the window frames, over and over and over again, and “dusting” the books. As I felt more and more useless the longer I cleaned things, I had to constantly remind myself of what the Shifu told us, which was that we should have no like or dislike attached to the task we were performing, but to just realize that this task
The experience I encountered during the service learning project was great. Throughout the weeks allocated for the service learning project, I tutored grade two and three pupils from three different schools under two agencies. The names of the agencies are Lion Catcher and MLK Community Center. This project gave me the opportunity to work with little kids for a long time. This provided me with the privilege to help and work with people who are enthusiastic about learning. Through my colleagues and me, we were able to achieve the goal of the service learning project. One of the goals is to work with minorities who needs help. This goal does not benefit our clients only but us also, it helped us organize and improve the way we think about supporting our client and managed good clinical judgment.
A Service Learning project is one of the project requirements to complete the Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree through Ferris State University (FSU). My Service Learning experience was completed at the VA Medical Center (VAMC) in November, 2014. This paper includes details of the facility along with the contact information for the coordinator of the project. A description of my role as a volunteer, critical reflection of my experience, and a synthesis of the Service Learning are also included.
Service Learning is an educational strategy set in place to enlighten students with instruction and experience, in addition to improve learning , teach responsibility, and support the community. Service learning is vital to the development of the student, given that it intertwines academic and personal development together. It is aimed to enhance a student’s learning in all aspects of life.
The benefit of service learning for the student and community is again a better inform civic minded individual who may use his experience from service learning as a launching pad for career opportunities to better serve within that community. In an article published in the College Student Journal its author noted that with service learning “students gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility" (Strange,
I have had the opportunity to volunteer for the All Major Career Fair. I have volunteered many times before, but never had the opportunity to do a career fair. I have found through the experience that I need to volunteer more often. Before I volunteered for this career fair, I have not volunteered in a while. Whenever the Kennesaw State has another career fair I will definitely take the time out to volunteer on my own.
Through out my service-learning project there were different activities and sites my cousin and I visited in the community. The first site my cousin and I had our activity in was in my home in Boyle Heights, where we had a conversation about his diabetes and talked about his experiences with type1 diabetes as a teenager. I decided to choose my home as our first activity because it was the perfect place to ask my cousin to participate in my project and make him feel comfortable enough to share his experiences with me. The second activity we arranged was a lunch date at Outback Steakhouse in Glendale. Having lunch at a restaurant was my cousin’s idea because he wanted to show me how different and difficult it can be from eating a home made meal.
Participating in this service learning writing assignment, Dortha Bare, Jordan Felver, my partner, and I all seemed excited but also nervous of meeting each other. Jordan and I had prepared our questions and assignment thoroughly. Our motivations seemed confident and well prepared in retrieving answers and getting to know Dortha that day. Incentive approaches to motivation are theories suggesting that motivation stems from the desire to attain external rewards, known as incentives (Feldman, 289). For example, grades, money, affection, and food are incentives. I believe this is the method that we used to obtain a new friendship with Dortha and to receive a college grade. Intrinsic motivation causes us to participate in an activity for our own
My role in my service learning position is at Tri-City Church (also Community Bible Church... as there is currently a merge going on) of Vista, CA. My position is primarily to care for the needs of children while the mothers are able to take a break to meditate on the sermon. This care includes feeding children, playing with them, soothing them, taking care of their toileting needs, and helping sign in and out the children to their parents or family members. While I am already fairly comfortable with this routine (as I have been doing it for some time now) there is still the occasionally apprehensive moment. Occasionally I have trouble connecting with the parent's if their new to the area. Earning parents' trust can be a difficult thing to do.
Today I met with Teri to present my service learning project to her. I explained to her that I had made a brochure to present all the information about depression to her and that she could keep it. I felt nervous and anxious about presenting. In my brochure I included a brief definition of what depression is, predisposing factors, signs/symptoms, complications, treatments, medications, prognosis, ways to relieve stress/anxiety, and resources to gather more information on depression. As I was presenting my project I began to feel more relaxed and at ease. I tried to make my brochure as brief as possible, so that it was easy to understand, but include all the information needed as well. I feel that I did a pretty job of meeting this goal. I went
For my Community Service Learning placement, I am volunteering for PAAL, which is a program for children and youth with physical and intellectual impairments. Their vision is to offer individuals who otherwise may not get the chance, an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of physical activities.
For the Service Learning Assignment, I decided to volunteer at Northwind Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. The first expectation I have for my service experience is that it is going to take me out of my element. I know that I am going to be exposed to situations that I typically do not see on a daily basis. I believe that the agency/organization and staff would be pleasant to work with. The last couple of months, I visited a few nursing home/rehab centers and everyone always has been pleasant. After reading the responsibilities for this service experience, the task does not seem overwhelming or complicated. It would be like spending time with a family member and making them feel comfortable. The patient may be a little challenging depending
In this paper, I discuss the experience I have gained from my service learning, along
Within the Service Learning Project, I have learned quite a few things. I have learned that I know a lot more about history then I ever imagined I knew. I can explain events and facts than ever before, but most importantly I learned that the government and society begins with myself. I have a duty and role within Society and the United States government to act morally and defend our nation.
This semester has been full of blessings within each of my service learning placements with my church, First Baptist Broken Arrow and as a peer tutor for the special Ed students during fifth hour. I have developed relationships with the people around me, and relationships that mean something. My peer partner, Hefzi and I, have already engaged in conversations regarding coming back after we graduate to see the students again. They have developed a special place in our hearts. It is one thing to meet new people, but it is another to help them grow as a person. It is amazing to think that not that long ago I was sitting down gazing at a piece of paper wondering which class to take my senior year, and chose this other service learning unsure
For my service learning aspect of this course, I volunteered at Lawrence Catholic Academy. There I worked one-on-one with a fourth grade boy who was struggling in all of his subjects. His grades were not very high and he needed a lot of extra help. One reason as to why he wasn’t doing well in school was because he rarely ever did his homework and therefore he always fell behind in class. Another thing that I had found out just a couple of weeks ago is that he was very sick last year and he had to miss half a year of school. Since he wasn’t in school for half of the year, he didn’t learn the material that he needs to know and therefore he is even further behind compared to the rest of his peers. I would always try my best to help him understand
