Reflective Essay: The Role Of Writing In English Classes

When going to college most, if not all students, will be told to write academically in several classes, especially English classes. It is a way of writing beyond what is taught in elementary, middle, and high school classes. It is how people who are seeking professionalism through higher education must write. Whether it be to inform othwrs of something they have learned, or to pose an argument for something that they either agree or disagree with. When a student is told to use academic writing they are expected to first find a subject or topic that they are going to write about, take a stance on the subject, decide whether they would like to argue another people's stance or inform their classmates, then they must compile information from reliable sources pertaining to the topic they are going to write about, determine who their audience is, and then find the correct and proper tone in which they need to use throughout the paper. All that I knew about this form of writing is that it is how I write my papers without sounding like I'm talking to a friend. It is to be formal rather than informal. However, after reading the "Academic Writing" document, I feel that I have a much stronger grasp as to what academic writing really is. It goes beyond just the idea of knowing that a student must write smartly, and into almost a guideline that a student must follow. I believe that since I now have a more in depth knowledge as to what this form of writing is I'll be able to write my argument papers more clearly by following the guidelines of summarizing, evaluating, analyzing, and synthesizing. I also believe that it will help me to better understand who my audience is, and what tone I will need to use when
