When going to college most, if not all students, will be told to write academically in several classes, especially English classes. It is a way of writing beyond what is taught in elementary, middle, and high school classes. It is how people who are seeking professionalism through higher education must write. Whether it be to inform othwrs of something they have learned, or to pose an argument for something that they either agree or disagree with. All that I knew about this form of writing is that it is how I write my papers without sounding like I'm talking to a friend. It is to be formal rather than informal. However, after reading the "Academic Writing" document, I feel that I have a much stronger grasp as to what academic writing really is. It goes beyond just the idea of knowing that a student must write smartly, and into almost a guideline that a student must follow. I believe that since I now have a more in depth knowledge as to what this form of writing is I'll be able to write my argument papers more clearly by following the guidelines of summarizing, evaluating, analyzing, and synthesizing. I also believe that it will help me to better understand who my audience is, and what tone I will need to use when
What is academic writing? If you were to ask a majority of first year college students what academic writing is I am definite that an inadequate amount will be able to give you the correct definition, while some like myself may not even have a clue as to what academic writing is. Since taking English 101 and being assigned the readings, They Say/ I Say and Rhetorical Approaches I was able to comprehend the meaning of academic writing for the better of my understanding. According to Purdue University academic writing is, “Rules and practices that may be organized around a formal order or structure in which to present ideas, in addition to ensuring that ideas are supported by author citations in literature.” Also the text in They Say/I Say reads, “For us, the underlying structure of effective academic writing ---and of responsible public discourse---resides not just in stating our own ideas but in listening closely to others around us, summarizing their views in a way that

While in high school some teachers required MLA, while others insist in APA Style Paper. Some of my time in college included taking writing courses, where I learned to use in-text citations and to research reliable sources. I enjoyed every minute of writing and researching information for my papers. The downfall for me when it comes to writing is having to ask someone to proofread your paper. If you are confident about your paper and the proofreader ends up making changes, it can ruin your confidence. It is never fun to get marked down or to have peers tell you how to do something. This is a feeling that is very hard to explain for those who haven’t experienced it. "One of their participants captured the fear by describing it as being 'like an intellectual striptease (275)'." To be judged and ridiculed by peers about your writing can feel like a striptease. It makes you uncomfortable, puts you in an awkward situation, and makes you question all that you have done. Unfortunately, there are people who feel like a “striptease” anytime they have to write because they aren’t comfortable with expressing themselves or some have writers block. Writing is a great tool for those who want to express what they feel and share their opinions on certain subjects. However, there are some who are not comfortable with the task. It is always important not to push it on anyone. It

Writing is something I have always thoroughly enjoyed and used as a pass time, although, when I am forced to write it can be a struggle. There is something about being forced to write about a topic from a differing perspective that creates writers block. For me, writing academically creates this writers block. This hindrance to my writing tends to not only be a blow to my academic career, but also my confidence as a writer. These troubles have led to me having to develop different writing strategies than what I am typically used too.

Every paper or speech I write, I always begin with thinking and writing down ideas. This is the easiest way I have learned to organize thoughts and get everything written down that should be addressed. I follow that by writing numbers by the ideas and put them into chronological order. I then proceed to write the paper or speech with paper and pencil. I proofread the handwritten draft and then type it out. When I begin writing, I try to think of who the audience is, what terminology to use and how to explain it. Whenever I talk about golf, I always know I have to simplify the vocab down or explain it because no many people comprehend golf very well.

The language that I first learned to speak at home was English. My family, considering my father’s side of the family is Mexican, has always loved the Mexican culture. They love the food, the music, the history, and the language. When my parents learned about an elementary school that was able to teach me both English and Spanish, they jumped at the opportunity to enroll me, and later my sister, into the school. My parents made it a priority that my sister and I enroll because they were never able to learn how to speak, read, write, or understand Spanish very well, so they wanted us to have this fantastic opportunity. They also decided to enroll us so that we are able to talk with our family members who live in Mexico that speak no English at all. Although I was too young at the time to ask to be enrolled into that school, with my knowledge now I know that I definitely would have advocated for that to happen.
