For as long as I can remember I have always struggled with writing especially essays. I am not sure if it is my lack of imagination or my lack of knowledge with writing basics but writing has definitely been a struggle for me. When I entered this class I became very nervous right away to learn that I was going to have to write in this class. Could I be successful in this class? Would I have any idea what I was doing? Although, I was nervous and had many fears, as soon as we jumped into week two things seemed to flow and my fears seemed to subside. This class was setup in a way that helped the student be successful. The key to my success was to not fear the essay but to break it apart and do it in pieces (the way the course was set up). The research paper was very beneficial in teaching me the sections of a research essay that can be carried over into other writing areas.
This course was broken up into pieces, which made it not so overwhelming when putting this essay together. Every week we were given a piece of the essay to work on. The first week was a refresher of MLA format, which I was pretty familiar with already. Next, we moved into picking our topic. This was fun as we got to research what we would be interested in learning more about and discussing further. I picked the costs of illegal immigration. This is a very complex and sensitive subject. It was very interesting to learn how illegal immigration effects many aspects of our country. Although, this is a very
Writing is a practice that most of us were taught when we were young. We were taught the basics of grammar, how to form a sentence, conjunction words, how to write paragraphs and more. Although we have learned this skill while growing up and have used the skill every year after entering kindergarten, this does not mean our writing process will ensure the best work. The authors that I chose each encourage their audience to excel in the art of writing in their own way to help with the writing process.
I learned a lot in this class during the semester. The first project was our learning narrative, it was not what I was expecting from a writing class. I expected we would be writing a many formal essays in MLA format with lots of sources and research. The first essay being a creative writing project was unexpected. At first writing a narrative from my personal experience was difficult for me. I had not written anything besides formal essays since high school. Writing something that was creative and expressive was an adjustment. After a few days of writing I began to really enjoy my learning narrative. I liked being able to express myself and my own experiences and share them with others.
I came into this class expecting to fly through it to complete the necessary credits for college. I got instead was an education through writing that will help me further myself in my future career choices. I wish that I had only worked harder on the essays I was given to write to help my grades and future even more. I valued the lessons and instruction on the different forms of essays that came from attending this class. My next step is to continue that path that was made possible with the skills that I have acquired from this course.
Upon entering English 111, I knew I would be writing papers. However, I did not anticipate how much room I had for improvement. Throughout this term I have been enlightened with so much knowledge that I may have forgotten or have been exposed to for the first time. Certainly, my experience with essay writing has been solidified due to newfound knowledge of proper work citing, MLA standards and the steps of planning an essay. Perhaps, my time away from a learning environment slowed me down a bit, other times I feel as though I have an advantage due to life experience. An online environment has certainly been challenging but throughout the course I have provided solid work and consistent grades commendable of an A grading.
Writing influences the way humans communicate. Good writing skills are essential in the working world and it’s important for our own self. The love for writing creative stories that engage the reader personally feels like an impossible task. After thirteen years of English I’ve realized that English does not come easy to me. It’s important to note that my writing skills have improved over the years. Going into my first year of college, I was nervous. I knew that my writing needed improvement. During my first semester of college, I was able to take the WAC 101 class. This class not only improved my writing, but it also encouraged me to start reading again. I look at reading as a task instead of a hobby, but I know that it can progress toward something that I like to do on my free time. WAC 101 is a class that helps develop a student’s writing skills. To measure the progress, outcomes in different areas of writing are reflected upon.
Prior to this course I expected myself to struggle extremely with the requirements that Professor Groneman would ask for. I knew that this course wasn’t going to be a walk in the park, so I prepared myself to become more responsible when it came to the assignments, and deadlines. One of the aspects that surprised me was the amount of writing I could get done. I had never done a five or more page essay, and at first I didn’t think I could do it. I used to stress when it came to the essay, but it has become more natural and easier to write. Another aspect that surprised me was how well my essays became when it came to the flow of the paper. At first, I had always struggled with making my essays connect and flow, and now I’m able to. At the beginning
This course started off by assigning us with a diagnostic essay to allow to show how each student wrote at the beginning of the course. When I look back at that, there were several problems of how I expressed my ideas, how I organized my paper, and how I used poor word choices. After that, this course took of from there, we started many more essays throughout the semester. My fingers are still are numb from all the typing I have done and the stress when I forgot a paper was due. However, this course was great in evaluating and conductively criticizing students on their
I found the essay in week one to be a little difficult. I am not accustomed to writing and do not practice as often as I should. After beginning this class, I have seen that maybe I should practice a little more.
I totally agree with what the author is saying in the text. It takes time to get a good product out even though we think some people are deep and wonderful they still have the same struggles that we have when it comes to writing. I like this text because it is realistic it is giving an account of first drafts from common day people and shows how it is even for professional writers have problems with. This point is important because as people we sometimes feel we are not as good or capable of doing something not realizing that the people we look up to have the same problems we do. Another point that I agree with the author on is that you have to start somewhere. Many times as writers we don’t know where to start when it comes to writing. That being said we will just sit and think for ten twenty minutes when we could've just been information on the paper and then editing it later. In addition I liked that the author used examples from his professional experience when it came to writing food reviews. By him using details like how he went to the restaurant and sat down with friends and took notes of what was said. This was good to me because it helps me connect with him and the things that he does to write his reviews.
One of the techniques I am going to use through out college is talking to
I can say I got a lot out of this class. So even though this class was more difficult than I anticipated I learned so many things that I did not know before about writing. I feel much more comfortable continuing forth with writing essays in my future writing assignments and
This class has been one of the more challenging classes I had this semester. It was challenging because it forced me to really sit down and check my writing process. It gave me a whole new outlook on how I write my papers. I always thought that I was pretty decent at writing papers and I would not have to worry too much. However, this class has given me a new perspective and has allowed me to see that there are many areas that I could improve on in my writing. I needed to improve in areas such as the style of my writing and my sentence structure. I needed to work on my grammar and my punctuation. I had to work on paying more attention to the little details in my writing. This class has allowed for me to really deconstruct and examine how I
Before I came to college, I felt my writing had to follow a certain pattern and be fixated around one way of thinking. What I was fortunate to learn was quite the opposite. Writing does not have to follow any certain pattern, but can rather be structured through many different possibilities. I was also told in high school that my papers either had to agree or disagree with the given topic, even if I believed otherwise. This formulated a very one-track way of thinking when it came to my papers. Now I know that I can let my mind explore new and exciting ideas. I can agree, disagree, compliment, criticize, and question the author however my heart desires, as long as I have the evidence to back myself up. Many authors in the book, Writing About Writing, explain their processes as well as the processes of others when it comes to writing. As a writer, I can draw on my own processes and relate them to the authors, as well as use their ideas and apply them to myself. Through reading, I have learned new methods of invention, planning and revising, and incubation when it comes to writing. All ways I can use to create more meaningful and creative work.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past
When I first started the class I was struggling a lot. Since English is my second language, I had many stressful moments that made me think about dropping my classes. But when I thought about my future, I just kept studying even harder, waiting for my performance to improve. As a result, I felt like every time I wrote an essay, it got easier, which tells me that I’m on the right path. In addition, this class has helped me improve my grammar, taught me an important life lesson about sticking on my goal and helped me to enhance my computer skills
