Love is tough business, the two involved in one relationship is expected to put equal effort into that relationship. Some people might not do so well and others may have great relationships, but then we come across ones that can stay together even through the toughest times. Sometimes the other person in the relationship leaves for a while, either for work, emergencies, and sometimes they serve in the military. Sometimes, they’ll be gone for a few days, weeks, months or years. A lot could change for both involved in that bond of love; moreover, the character of the people could also change. Just an example that comes to mind and my favorite scene in the Odyssey, when Odysseus comes home from battling at Troy and the long hard suffering voyage back to Ithaca. This is a prime example of bond between two people being tested to it’s limit. …show more content…
First he leaves to go fight at Troy. After that, He goes on this long painful expedition back home to Ithaca. After Troy, Odysseus and his crew head to the land of Ismara, regarding Odysseus’s order after plundering the Cicones, when they were being chased by the Cicones many men were killed. This would be one of many times that Odysseus would lose his men. After more time on the sea, he comes across the island of hulking cyclops. They wound up in a cave and were caught by the owner of that cave, Polyphemus. Trapped, Odysseus and his crew were stuck in that cave for many days. Thanks to Odysseus’s quick thinking they managed to go back to their ships and leave with the few lucky men to survive the cyclops. The final leg of his trip, he went through the underworld and met with great grief. Soon he came across a herd of the sun god, Helios’s, cattle. With his crew taking advantage of the forbidden cattle, they took sail and were struck by the might of zeus, killing everybody except
The outcome was them being blasted all the way to where they started. They also disobeyed Odysseus by eating cows that he told them not to. They were not just regular cows, they were sacred cows of the sun god. He was furious. He told Zeus to punish them, so Zeus sent a lightning bolt down to Earth which destroyed the ship, and killed everyone, except Odysseus, because he didn’t eat the
Chapter 12- Odysseus’s story continues with Odysseus burying Elpenor, where Circe tells him what to do. Then, he goes through the Sirens song and Scylla with his crew. Afterwards, the Sun makes Zeus punish Odysseus, which he does, by destroying his ship. Odysseus ends the story with him reaching Ogygia.
Odysseus and his men land on the shore of cyclops island. They get trapped in a cave by Polyphemus, the cyclops son of Poseidon. Odysseus tells the cyclops
The crew tries to survive on the provisions on the ship, but when they run out hunger drives the crew to slaughter Helios’s cattle of the Sun. Odysseus had warned them not to kill the cattle, and now he knows they will die. After six days the storm stopped and they set out again, but another storm came from
In the beginning, he had to leave behind his wife, newborn son, and his hometown, which even then had useless suitors. Throughout the journey, Odysseus’ actions of temerity only bring him down in a series of ways: first, after blinding the Cyclops Polyphemus, Poseidon’s son, Odysseus cannot suppress his joy. He yells off of the ship to Polyphemus, stating both his name, and his hometown. Because of this careless act, he causes not only Poseidon to hate him, but it also brings the Phaecians a bad omen, later causing their ship to turn to stone. Secondly, after visiting Tiresias in the Underworld, and being told not to eat Helios’s cattle, they negligently do so. Odysseus foolishley lets his men go onto the island, and is clueless while they are killing cattle. This later results in everyone but him getting killed by a thunderbolt. Although both Telemachus and Odysseus have made frivolous mistakes, in the end they both come out as stronger
Poseidon decided to create a horrible storm when the Greeks set sail for their home. This storm destroyed most of their ships and blew some very far in different directions, the storm also killed Ajax after he survived
After many heroic deeds and much danger and peril Odysseus journeys to the underworld and back, escaped the sirens, evades Charybdis and Scyylla, and loses all of his men. His men eat the sungod’s cattle even after promising Odysseus that they wouldn’t, so Zeus kills all of his men by striking their ship with a bolt of lighting (Odyssey 11-13:1-452).
Feeling confident, him and his men stop in Ismara and engage in battle with the Ciconians fell asleep and lost many men. They made a stop at the land of the Cyclopes. He leads his crew into a cyclops' cave not knowing who the home belonged to and waited for the owners to return. When the owner of the cave does return the he's very angry with the Odysseus and his crew for eating his food. They are trapped there for a couple days and come up with a plan to escape. they plunged a wooden stake into the eye of the Cyclopes and manage to escape. The Cyclops Polyphemus then calls for the help of his father Poseidon, god of the sea to avenge
The cleverest general of the Greek forces, Odyssey finally sails back to his homeland, Ithaca, after ten years of the Trojan War. However, because of Odysseus’ ego and some unintentional accidents, he incurs wrath of gods and suffers through various adventures for another ten years. One significant event that has a huge impact throughout Odysseus’ journey is when Odysseus blinds the son of Poseidon, Polyphemus. After this event, furious Poseidon impedes various attempts of Odysseus to go back to Ithaca. Another significant event is when Odysseus’ servants kill Helios’ cattle when the famous prophet named Tiresias warned Odysseus to be careful when his ship lands on Helios’ island.
Not only does Odysseus’s thought through plans shadow his shallow actions, but also his terrific skill to assess social situations and to think of the social consequence ahead of time. As an illustration, Odysseus decides to be kind and considerate and analyze the social situation and customs when he first meets Nausicaa, the young princess. He is washed up on an unplanned island, when he sees a bunch of young girls playing by the river. In that social situation, you won’t walk right up to those girls, demanding goods or directions, since you don’t know where you landed and what the customs are. Odysseus was astute and decided to be gracious and gentle towards the land, customs, and the girls. Odysseus’s politeness pleased the princess and she brought him into town and into her palace, where Odysseus’s could meet the King and Queen. Respectfully, Odysseus was cautious as he speaked and did and said things that only pleased the rulers.
Odysseus faces many gods, frightening sea creatures, and mythical beasts. Odysseus’ first obstacle is Calypso. She loves him and wants to hold him captive on her island forever, but with the help of Hermes, the messenger god, Odysseus and his men are able to leave. While they are sailing, Odysseus and his men find an island and they proceed to raid it for food and other things. After a little while, they meet the cyclops, Polyphemus, who eats many men and poses as a big threat to Odysseus’ journey home.
Odysseus’ men go against what he said and they opened the bag. All of the winds then escaped. Odysseus also met the Laestrygonians on his journey home. The Laestrygonians are cannibals and they eat the Greeks. The only people who survived were Odysseus and the men on his ship.
After defeating Troy Odysseus gets to the actual part of his adventure also known as the threshold. Odysseus encounters with The Cyclops named Polyphemus and is cursed by Poseidon which is now one of Odysseus’ enemies. Circe, Nausicaa, and Ino were his allies because they all attempt to help him try to get back to the ordinary world which would be the land of Ithaca. On his way back from Nausicaa’s, Odysseus disguises himself as a suitor.
Sing I me, Muse, and through me tell the story of the lady nymph goddess Calypso. Oh so beautiful and immortal who lives in the sea- hollowed caves on the island Ogygia. She craved the hero of Troy, king of Ithaka, son of Laertes, a mortal and took him as her own. Nine long years they spent on the island together.
When Odysseus is in trouble he always shows that he is depending on the gods by praying to them. The fact that the gods usually listen to him shows that he is well liked by the gods. In order to be a Greek hero you had to be liked by the gods since religion was such a big part in their lives. Odysseus, with the help of the gods, can survive adventures that kill most other men. Odysseus travels to the island of the Cyclopians. The Cyclopians are giants that have one eye, they don't fear the gods because they believe that they are better than the gods and they eat people. They represent the opposite of what Greek men should be. Odysseus and his men meet Polyphemus the Cyclops. Polyphemus being a Cyclops eats some of Odysseus' men. Odysseus with the help of the gods figures out a plan to escape and he does. Scylla is a ferocious monster with six heads that kills most men that pass by her island. She kills six of Odysseus' men. Odysseus prevents her from killing himself and more men. There is another ferocious monster named Charybdis. Charybdis sucks in water from the sea and creates a whirlpool that kills any ship that passes by. Odysseus passes by her. His crew is killed and his ship is destroyed in the whirlpool but Odysseus alone survives. There is an island that Odysseus passes by with monsters called Sirens on it. The Sirens sing beautiful songs that lure ships toward them. The ships then crash into the island and the people are killed.
