Christian beliefs are some of the most outstanding themes within the poem Beowulf. In their text, the poet hugely uses the Christian religious beliefs to symbolize certain element of the good and the evil. Further, the poet still utilizes the Christian beliefs or religion to symbolize heaven and hell. During the Anglo-Saxon period, religion hugely influenced a lot of literal work. The poems in many different ways used various characters to portray the Old Testament although never mentioned the Christ. Further, there are numerous references to biblical content in the said works of literature. The reference to the Bible and by the use of specific characters to refer to certain content in the Bible is some of the important use of symbolism in the poem. …show more content…

Numerous parts from the poem reveal that the king enjoyed a lot of protection from God and was never worried about his enemies such as Grendel. The king was a very good man, who was worried about what his enemies would do to his people rather than what they could do to him. The king greatly symbolizes many characters in both the old and the new testament of the Christian bible. For instance, the king as a character symbolizes Moses or David. Both were leaders who were chosen by God and had his protection during the time as kings. Further, Grendel, the king’s enemy in the poem could symbolize Goliath, who was also an epic sinner.
