Religion; a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects. Religion effects an individual’s perspective of the world. It affects the way people act, speak and think. Nations, countries, cities and villages are affected by religion. Everyone all over the world is affected by religion. In 1958 Chinua Achebe wrote the novel Things Fall Apart. The novel took place in the Ibo village of Umofia, where the actions of the people were based on their animistic beliefs. When some Christian missionaries bring their religion to Umofia, nihilism occurs. This event causes Okonkwo, a great “hero” in Umofia, to make detrimental decisions throughout the novel. Okonkwo was well respected and looked up to by the people of Umofia because of his accomplishments at an early age. Okonkwo’s early determination came from seeing his father’s struggles and shameful death, which is why he refused to follow in his footsteps. Okonkwo lived his life with the fear of resembling his father, the fear of being perceived as weak or effeminate. Anything that resembled his father angered him. Because Okonkwo was a leader in his community he was given the responsibility to care for a young boy named Ikemefuna. After taking the boy in Okonkwo starts to recognize him as his own son. As the novel progresses Okonkwo’s rashness becomes more prominent. During the Week of Peace, Okonkwo violates the tradition by beating his wives. Later the elder of the village tells Okonkwo about a message he received from the Oracle to kill Ikemefuna. But because Ikemefuna now looks up to Okonkwo as a father, Okonkwo is not to take part in the killing of Ikemefuna. Okonkwo doesn’t listen to him because he feels that, he not participating in the murder is a sign of weakness. After Okonkwo kills Ikemefuna he goes through a phase of depression, but he convinces himself that it was a sign of weakness and soon recovers. Judaism is a monotheistic religion founded by Moses. Moses was a prophet sent, by God to spread the Judaist faith. “And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face,” (Deut. 34:10). In the Jewish religion they believe that Moses had a direct encounter with God, in which he was directed to write the 13 Principles of Faith. The 13 Principles of Faith are defined as “the fundamental truths of our religion and its very foundations.” (Chabad.org). the Jewish religion and lifestyle is also based on the Ten Commandments. The Jews were required to live their lives based on these Ten Commandments, stated in the Torah. The way they lived their lives on earth determined their afterlife. The overall goal of the Jewish religion is to make it to heaven after death through following the laws given to Moses through God, and if these laws were broken the consequences would be
