Religion is one of the most controversial topics in our society today. It has forced people to view religion in variety of different perspectives. For some, religion has become a way of life, and for others it is used as weapon to harm people. Thus, the importance of religion is gradually fading away. The Media plays an important role in our lives by predominately portraying religion in a negative manner. Rarely does it illustrate religion in a positive light. Media depicts religion as a poison that engulfs a person from the inside. It illustrates religion as an “iron curtain” that divides people, a weapon used to persecute people, and finally as a source to stereotype people, at times, media portrays religion as a binding factor that …show more content…
This is apparent in the ongoing war in Iraq between Sunni and Shi’a (two sects of Islam). Unfortunately, religion has only succeeded in causing chaos and “holy wars” when it is supposed to bring peace. According to the media, religion not only creates turmoil and segregates people, but it also uses religion as an excuse to persecute people.
The media persuades people to understand how religion persecutes innocent people. The media portrays how religion can be manipulated as a weapon to harm people. For instance, a religious extremist is a person who uses religion as a weapon to harm people. In Afghanistan, Taliban extremists murdered two people for committing adultery by stoning them to death. Hence, the so-called “religious” people have gone too far punishing a person by granting him/her death. According to the Taliban extremists, the deed was done in the name of the God. “Anyone who knows about Islam knows that stoning is in the Qur’an, and that is Islamic law, there are people who call it inhuman-but in doing so they insult the prophet”. (Associated Press, “The crime was young love the sentence was barbaric death”) extremists are taking the formal teachings and practices and twisting it into something that is exactly opposite; these people take the Qur’an literally. The Qur’an does not condone stoning and Islam itself does not condemn someone to death for adultery. In addition, the Hindu extremists and the Muslim
Today we have some struggles on religion, according to the media and the daily life. For example, in Facebook they show videos about people of different race, dressed
In the event of the terrorist attack on the newspaper Charlie Hebdo, instead of protesting or taking legal action some decided to kill innocent people to get revenge. It was religion based and when they started killing all those people, it made what they stood for look ludicrous. We are seeing this happen in our own country as well. I think about all of the shootings that have been arising and about innocent lives being taken, most of which have occurred recently because of a group of Islamists. This doesn’t mean that every person who is involved with the religion of Islam is that way, but it makes a lot of people skeptical and judgmental because that is what the media highlights, focusing on the fact that it is indeed about religion.
“The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses,” were the words of Malcolm X during his famed 1963 speech. Many believe this quote has lost relevance in our contemporary society. However, on the contrary, it rings more true than ever. One popular topic that has had an extreme influence on our society due to the way the media portrays it is terrorism. Whether it is a tragic event such as 9/11 or simply the way it portrays Muslims, the media tends to sensationalize the fear and tragedy of such events to increase publicity while also depicting all terrorists as Muslim
Religion has been at the forefront of many issues recently covered by the news. In many of these news stories, religious beliefs are not used to demonstrate support for a cause or issue, but rather religion is used to voice dissent. During the week of June 23, 2013, news coverage touching upon religious issues, many of which remain unresolved.
Religion is and has always been a primary foundation for individuals, families and communities. It plays a tremendous role, and can be interpreted as the engine of life, which holds people in good and in bad moments. Individuals find in religion a refuge. Such is the influence of worship, regardless of the type that it is, it has served in human beings over the centuries; therefore, these influences have brought with it a large number of situations and opinions which have indeed managed to leave no one indifferent. In the same way, there have been wars and armed conflicts of various kinds that have sustained in the religion to be carried out. According to Marsden “The term religion may be
The on going conflict in Afghanistan or the “War On Terror” is another conflict that some could argue is due to religious reasons. The Terror attack in the United States was the catalyst for the cause of the war it could defiantly be said to be caused by religious matters. Due to the terrorists having misguided beliefs in there religion and being extremists in acting in the religion of Islam which gives it a bad representative of the true religion. On the flip side of the argument there are defiantly a lot of conflicts of wars that were not caused due to religion. A example of this would be the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq, this was a non religious act and was caused because of power. Saddam Hussein wanted to caputre and control more land and beloved Kuwait was part of Iraq. This changes perspectives of the argument and shows not all wars have religious reasons to
American mass media is a huge contributor to the demonization of Muslims. A grisly beheading results in days of media coverage. Muslim leaders holding a press conference denouncing terrorism, which they have done extensively in response to ISIS, will result in two to three minutes of media coverage on cable news. This is terrifyingly inaccurate considering less than 10% of terrorist threats and actions are from Islamic terrorists. America Instead of reacting to any of these attacks as they had Right-wing Timothy McVeigh's attack in April 19, 1995. America would start the mislabeled “War on terror” proceeding to pigeonhole Islamic extremism and brush aside the motivations of groups likes McVeigh and other group’s violent actions. Compounding this issue is that there are few positive images of Muslims or Muslim Americans in American entertainment media. In fact, even many Muslims are shockingly ignorant of their own religion. With no official leadership or governance like in many Christian religious, Islam falls more
In this essay we will discuss the importance of religion in society. We will attempt to explain why societies have religions and what functions their belief system has for them. We will also ask if these functions are now out-dated and if religions have any meaningful function in today's world or are they just stained glass windows into a bygone era? 'Religion' can be defined by two main groupings. 'The inclusive definition' covers all topics and subjects of a persons life including, not only, their belief in a deity but also their belief and belongingness to music, sport and any other interests the person may hold. 'The exclusive definition' refers to just their belief system regarding a 'supra-human' (Browne 2005, p. 311). It is mainly
When we think about the primary reasons for war today, the most common reasons are for war are defending against attack, political control or wealth, recapturing lost items or people, or punishing those who have done wrong. We tend to assume religion is not the main cause of war - according to the Encyclopedia of Wars (Phillips and Axelrod), of the 1,763 major conflicts in recorded history, only 123 of them can be classified as having been fought over religious differences. That’s less than 7 percent.
In today’s society, news and media have a great influence in how we see individuals and groups within the United States and even globally. One example is how many news outlets are portraying Muslims. They are often described as anti-gay, anti-female, anti-human rights, barbaric, uncivilized, etc. By describing the Muslim community in such harsh terms the media is allowing Muslims to become “Others” and monsters. While terrorism is a huge and scary issue facing this world, we can’t fully blame all Muslims for this. However, with the way the media is describing Muslim communities it can almost be easier to view them as monsters and the sole proprietors of terror. Another example may be the 2016 election. The candidacy of Donald Trump was met
The debate between whether religion cause war or not based on their impression of religion; furthermore, it is unreasonably clear about what does and does not permit like a religion. Countries such as Islam are fated while certain others, like nationalism, are subjectively ignored. Authors used different theories such as absolutist, divisive, and absurd to explain why religion is so predisposed to violence. Sometimes authors combine these arguments to make their case.
On January 29, 3003, thousands of Americans were seated in front of their television screens, eagerly and somberly watching the man on the screen. During the man’s speech, the words “There’s power, wonder-working power” were brought forth, and it was those very words which have turned heads, and incurred opinions, articles, and editorials across the nation. Had this man been a preacher there is no doubt that his comments would have gone un-criticized. However, this man was not a preacher, but rather George Bush, the President of the United States of America. His comment did not escape notice nor criticism, and has become highlighted in the recent media focus on politics and religious faith.
that religion and politics have a long history in the Middle East does not mean that religion is always, or even most of the time, a crucial factor driving political conflicts. Most of the politics of the Middle East have been viewed by those inside and outside the region as driven by religious difference. From the Arab-Israeli conflict to the Iranian revolution to the emergence of
Since many religions have started in the Middle East, it has become the center for erupting conflicts. For instance, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has been in the news for many reasons. Both groups want control of the God given land that they both claim is theirs, according to God, and what had happened in the past. The result of the conflict is religious terrorism (PBS, 1). Continuing, some Middle Eastern politics have been in conflict, even dividing communities of the
Many people believe that war is always caused from religious differences and if there was no religion, the violence in the world would be demolished. War may cause death tolls to rise in countries, and history has shown that religion has been a factor that causes countries to go to war. Europe has had many wars about religion for instance. According to World Encyclopedia, “religious grievances provided justification for widespread violence and aggressive domestic policies. Consequently, nearly all of Europe was, at one point or another, engaged in the wars of religion” (World Encyclopedia 725). Everyone here had the “I’m right, you’re wrong” mentality and this resulted in a country filled with power hungry citizens who all wanted their religion to be the one and only. However, religion is not the only reason wars occur, there are many other factors that play into violence.
