Remember the Titans Group Dynamics
Remember the Titans looks at the beginning of integration, both racism and friendships of the team, as they overcome prejudice. The movie starts, the head coach of the Titans is replaced by an African American coach from North Carolina. Tensions arise when players of different races are forced together on the same football team. Many of these tensions are eased during the two-week training camp, unites the team mates. As the football season progresses the team's success causes the community to accept the changes of integration.
Herman Boone is a black man and head coach of the football team, his perfectionist tendencies come across as tough. But his toughness is fair; he treats all his players equally whether they're black or white. Boone's style of coaching is different than coach Bill Yoast, a white man, highly respected both as a coach and member of the community. Yoast cares a great deal about his players, enough to stay and work as the assistant coach when Boone is unexpectedly offered the head coaching position over him.
Team captain Gerry Bertier begins the season angry about the incoming black players. But he soon comes to appreciate the skills the new players bring to the field. Bertier is a strong athlete and is dedicated to his sport and team. One of the incoming black players who becomes close friends with Bertier is Julius Campbell.
