The African wild dog is known by various names: painted dog, painted lycaon, Cape hunting dog, African hunting dog, or Lycaon pictus. The African wild dog is a medium sized species characterized by their bright, mottled fur, having its name in Latin meaning painted wolf. This canine is found across South Africa in open plains and woodlands, but today, the African wild dog is more limited in range. Sadly, according to the IUCN Red List, the African wild dog was categorized as an endangered species in 2008 (Sillero-Zubiri & Woodroffe, 2012). The African wild dogs are members of the Canidae family or “true dogs”. These canines are related to other species including, foxes, wolves, coyotes, domesticated dogs and jackals. In the late Pleistocene Hayonim Cave of Israel, isolated records of Lycaon pictus were found. The Lycaoni record in Africa is poor, but fossil records in South Africa indicate a possibility of this genus occurring as early as the middle Pleistocene (Tedford & Wang, 2008). Below is the full taxonomy for the African wild dog species: Domain: Eukarya
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora

The patter of colors is unique in each organism which is used as identification by researchers. Naturally, they have dark fur on their head and a bushy tail with a white tip. These canines have large, rounded ears, which possibly help with heat loss and picking up long distance vocal signals from its pack members. African wild dogs have a thin body with long, muscular legs. Distinctively, African wild dogs have four toes on each foot, whereas other canines have 5 toes. According to Nation Geographic, an average African wild dog weighs between 18 to 36 kilograms and has a size of 75 to 110 centimeters. Their average life span in the wild is up to 11 years
Labrador retrievers are one of the most popular pets in the United States, but not always for the right reasons. There are a lot of discussions about whether wolves and dogs belong to the same species or not. Recently dogs were reclassified from “canis familiaris” to “canis lupus familiaris” what means they are considered as a sub-species of the wolf species “canis lupus”. However, they are extremely close relatives and genetic studies prove that both share a common ancestry. We can consider a dog like tamed or domesticated form of a wolf.
For millions of years dogs have remained a constant companion of man. Bred from the aggressive and formidable Gray Wolf tens of thousands of years ago the domestic dog now lives in many homes across the world. Where in the far distant past the domestic dog was bred as a guard animal, a beast of burden, and even a food source the dogs of today are bred for a far more endearing purpose-companionship and love. Finding a pet dog that is more of a joy than a chore is necessary when asking: How much is that puppy in the window?

What Koepfli found, was not what he anticipated; the African golden jackal was not a subspecies of gray wolf, it is its own species. Through testing of mitochondrial DNA, Koepfli discovered that the African golden jackal, is actually the African golden wolf.
Wild dogs include dingoes (Canis lupus dingo), domestic dogs that have escaped, been abandoned or deliberately released and hybrids of the two over the Last 200 years that have survived or bred in the wild (Canis lupus familiaris).
Albino animals are very unique animals; not because of their certain species, but because of their skin. Albinos suffer from a loss of pigmentation in their skin, which can make their lives more difficult. If they are a species of prey, then their chances of staying alive are slim. If they are predators, then they have trouble hunting due to the white or pink color of their skin. From dolphins in the Pacific Ocean, to the kangaroos in the outback, albino animals all over the world are being saved in refuges.

It was a cool winter evening at my house in Leedey Oklahoma. I was so excited to get home because we got to open an early Christmas present. We got home then went into the livingroom to find a box in the middle of the room. We all gathered around the box then she said we could open it. I reached down and opened it to find the most adorable little black and white puppy sleeping in the box. It was love at first sight.
