Ganymede Jewelry
My God, am I such a jewelry fanatic! I knew as soon as I saw jewelry I had to write about it. Jewelry is something women and men but mostly women tend to adorn themselves with to either show stature, beauty or just to feel special about themselves. The Jewelry gives a lot of details on where it was made and the interesting designs on the necklace and earrings. Also, because it’s made of real gold and silver any women would be honored to wear such an amazing work of art. The Ganymede Jewelry was found in Macedonia near the area of Thessaloniki before 1913 and the jewelry pieces date back to being formed 330-300 B.C. They date back to the Hellenistic Greek period. Hellenistic period starts from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. to the conquest of Ptolemaic Egypt. This time period Greek cultural power was at the top in Europe, Africa and Asia. It experienced an influx of arts, literature, architecture, math, science and etc. The jewelry was made by Leochares in the beginning for the fourth century B.C. The Hellenistic Jewelry was made in current day Greece. The Ganymede Jewelry consists of earrings, necklace, pins, bracelets and a ring. But it’s not sure if they all go together. The neckless is shown to take on the look of ivy or grape leaf and have a border of beaded wire and a rosette in the center. Many places like Asia Minor, around the Black Sea area, southern Italy have known to have strap neckless,
The Hellenistic period of Greek art spans from the time of Alexander the Great’s death in 323 to 30 B.C.E. (“Hellenistic Period” 1). However there have been controversies of precisely how long the Hellenistic period lasted. Some argue that from C. 400; to the first century can be classified as “Pre-Hellenistic” (Janson 138-139). “Hellenistic, is a term meant to convey the
The necklace serves as a symbol for greed. When Mathilda Loisel loses the necklace that she believed was worth forty thousand francs, she desperately retraces her steps and gets her husband to help her find it as well. It ends up taking ten years to pay off the debt. The ten years were hard on Mathilda Loisel and her husband, and Maupassant told the reader that she “looked old now… with hair half combed, with skirts award, and reddened hands” (6). However, even after the long ten years of manual labor all because she lost the necklace, she “sat down near the window and though of that evening at the ball so long ago, when she has been so beautiful and so admired” (6). The necklace symbolizes that when greed controls emotions and decisions, it never leads to good results.
Her husband tries and tries until he comes up with a great idea to give her an invitation to a ball. She cheers up a little until she realizes she can’t afford a dress. Her husband asks how much and had given her the money to purchase herself a nice dress. She has the dress but still doesn’t feel pretty nor happy after she put the dress on. She wanted more than just the dress which was jewels but didn’t have any. Someone suggested that she should use flowers, but didn’t find happiness in the flowers. Madame Forestier offer Mathilde to borrow her diamond necklace, which gave her the emptiness that she needed to feel happy. She had a great night and was on her way home when she went to feel for the necklace but found that it was gone. She started to panic and retraced her steps but couldn’t find it anywhere. She and her husband went from jeweler to jeweler to find the exact necklace and to replace it. They worked and worked until they had paid it off and returned it to Madame Forestier. She was a little annoyed since she had got it a few weeks after the ball. Eventually she admitted to what she had done and was surprised with what she was told. She was informed that the necklace was a fake. That it was costume jewelry. In this story the Madame was an outsider towards Mathilde. Mathilde didn’t know who she was and had taken the necklace to wear for the
Guy De Maupassant is recognized as one of the finest writers of the modern short story. Maupassant’s literary career began in 1880 in France. He was a marvelous writer of short stories which were based upon the aspects of the French Society, frequently touching sensitive subjects such as social and moral principles. The beauty of Maupassant’s stories is the unpredictability of them, quite identical to life, where things do not always turn up the way one may expect. The short story, Jewelry by Guy De Maupassant is an insightful piece, with a compelling theme of appearance versus reality and that the life is full of irony.

The story intially takes place at a ball that Madame Louisel has been invited to by her husband. In the beginning of the story Madame is very indecisive about making an appearance at the ball. She complained she did not have a dress, any jewels, and she was scared she would look like a "pauper"(174). She did not want to look poor around a bunch of rich woman, so she had asked a friend for a piece of jewelry to wear for the night. Excited, she picks out the diamond necklace that seemed to stand out to her. She adored it. The narrator describes it as "lovliest of all, elegant, smiling, and radiating with joy"(175). Having a blast at the party, dancing, drinking, and not thinking about anything else, Madame left the ball around four in the morning. Calling a cab, Madame and her husband were on their way home, delighted with the fun night that they had. Finally arriving at home, they begin to get into comfortable clothes when suddenly Madame notices that the diamond necklace she had borrowed from a friend for the night had gone missing. Searching everyhwere
Jewelry is art and should be treated as such. Don't settle for pieces that are put together quickly without thought to longevity and style. By only shopping at stores that carry quality merchandise, it is easy to narrow down the search area to just a few stores or websites. It helps to ask around for recommendations or check out online reviews to get some insight from
From the first chapter, I found it particularly interesting when the narrator says, “she was so evidently the victim of the civilization which had produced her, that the links of her bracelet seemed like manacles chaining her to her fate” (page 8). So right from the first chapter we get an idea of the kind of society they are in, one that is mostly about money equating to power. The bracelet being a chain shows how imprisoned not only her but other women feel in that society, how they must be constantly dolled up, and if they can’t do it all themselves then that’s when they go get married (page 13). The bracelet is this constantly reminder that she, and women, are not free individuals but prisoners of society. The need to be pretty and fancy for others to see worth shows this idea of social expectations, or even social determinism.
Jewellery can be seen in our life, and according to the definition in the Cambridge Business English Dictionary, Jewellery is “decorative objects worn on your clothes or body that are usually made from valuable metals, such as gold and silver, and precious stones”(Cambridge Business English Dictionary)The general rule is that jewellery should include the following characteristics : beautiful, colorful, uncommon, expensive. In the past, jewellery always was expensive, but nowadays because advance of producing technical and many jewellery items is in mass production, jewllery become cheaper and popular. Mass produced jewellery make some people think jewellery is mainly for ornament, but some people believe that it is a
What would you do if your significant other passed on and left you with over 12 million dollars? That's exactly what Guy De Maupassant tries to answer in the short story, “The Jewelry”. The author answers this question by expressing it through the five main parts of a complete story the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and conclusion. Not having a plot in the story it would be the equivalent of reading someones everyday journal. There are many events that happen but they are in a random, that may not make sense. The three of the most important elements of this story are the rising action, climax, and conclusion. This short story allows each of the elements to build on each other creating a greater outcome for the following
Humans started to learn how to use items to decorate themselves in the distant past. They used items they found like fish bones, stones and shells as ornaments worn on their bodies. Later, they started to use pearls, gemstones, gold and silver as the raw material of jewelry. In ancient Egypt and Greece, they worked with a great quantity of gold to make jewelry. Although jewelry of these two countries were made of the same material, they had a different meaning and function that was sometimes influenced by the structure of government. In Egypt, the Pharaohs were considered gods and had absolute authority. Slavery was very common and provided cheap labor (Mark). It was
The late Irish poet Oscar Wilde once stated, "In the world, there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.” This quote accurately describes human nature to the extent that man is never fully satisfied with his current possessions. In fact, most people who rely on materialistic items for happiness are typically desolated and miserable. This story is based on an archaic view on women, where women have no caste or hierarchy. The people grade women based off their looks and beauty. Money “practically makes nobility” (Shmoop). It “enables the user to pay for the high life” (Shmoop) and confine the person with luxurious items known to man. Money controls the life of people,
Jewellery is usually worn as small decorative items for personal adornment such as rings, brooches, necklaces, earrings and necklaces. For many centuries metal has been often combined with various gemstones to make jewellery. Jewellery is usually made from a wide range of materials. Gemstones and similar materials such as amber and coral, precious metals, beads, and shells have been widely used, and enamelling technique has been applied. In most cultures jewellery can be understood as a status symbol, for its material properties, its patterns, or for meaningful symbols. Jewellery has been made to adorn nearly every body part, from hairpins to toe rings. The patterns of wearing jewellery between the sexes, and by children and older people can
