Jim Bowie There have been many people in the course of American History that have shaped the country we live in today. Some are well-known like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. There are some on the other hand that are not as well-known like James “Jim” Bowie. Jim Bowie was an American frontiersman who went to battle for our country knowing for a fact he was going to die, and still chose to stay and fight. It is people like Jim Bowie who will sacrifice their life for the great or good of others that helped make the United States America a free nation. Jim Bowie was born on March 10th of 1796 in Logan County, Kentucky. Jim’s parents were Rezin Bowie and Elve Ap-Catesby Jones. They had ten children in all with Jim being the ninth. In his younger years Jim Bowie and his family moved around a lot until finally settling down in Opelousas, Louisiana in 1812. Jim and his siblings were a very hard-working family. The Bowie children were raised on the frontier and even as small children were expected to help clear the land and plant crops. All of the Bowie children learned to read and write in English, but Jim and his elder brother Rezin could also read, write, and speak Spanish and French fluently. The children learned to survive on the frontier, how to fish and run a farm and plantation. Jim bowie was known for being fearless, and very good with a pistol, rifle, and knife.
