Lions are facing trouble in the wild. In the text it says, "Some end up in zoos and circuses; others are sent to Asia, where their bones are used in folk medicine. Many are sold to lion breeders, where they are used to produce more cubs. The rest end up as trophies in what is known as 'canned hunts,' in which lions are placed in fenced-in areas and sometimes sedated to make them easier targets. Up to 1,000 lions are killed in these types of hunts every year." That is a big problem. Lions face extinction in the wild. The lions that are raised in captivity. The lions that are big and strong get killed. Some have to go to lion breeders or circuses. That means that the Lions are being abused by the humans that own them.

The title of the article does help the reader understand the importance of the problem. The title “A Lifeline for Lions” shows that the author wanted you to understand how important the problem was and what the main idea of the article was before you started reading it. The author wanted to draw you in with the title. It was about how lions in the Serengeti got sick from dogs and people raise money to get the dogs vaccinated and help the lions return to good health. The lions in the Serengeti needed to be healthy, but the only way to do that was to get the dogs vaccinated so the disease did not spread anymore. The dogs got vaccinated for distemper and rabies for free so people would not have to worry anymore. The title the author chose
We have written this paper to gain insight on lions in captivity and establish the differences between lions in the wild and in zoos. The paper will focus on the mental, behavioural and physical effects, while also stating how zoos are involved in conservation.
From the furore over trophy hunting, the public could be forgiven for thinking that it was the major threat facing lions. But in reality, the key issues are loss of habitat, prey loss from bushmeat poaching and
South Africa has been an attraction for tourist hunters from the USA and Europe for decades. Its concept, a grim reality. Young lion cubs are taken from their mothers at birth. They are then raised by hand and bred in captivity, as commodities, for the sole purpose of being targeted in an enclosed hunting ground, where they have no chance to evade their hunters. Often times they are drugged or even baited with food.
Cecil’s death was hard for everyone to understand and most people still haven’t gotten over it. Cecil, male, was killed at the age of 13 on July 1st 2015, which is old for a lion since an average adult age is 3-8 years-old. The hunter that killed Cecil was American Dr. Walter James Palmer who would go Big Game Hunting very commonly. Palmer killed Cecil by luring him away from the sanctuary, Hwange Game Reserve, and shot him with a bow and arrow, skinned him, then to make it worse, he decapitated him. Ever since Cecil’s death, Dr. Palmer has been nowhere to be found and protesters had even rioted outside of his
In Africa’s lions are disappearing and human have themselves to blame it states that “farmers are moving onto land where lions have traditionally roamed.” That is not the important because rules aren’t always followed. In Africa’s lions are disappearing and human have themselves to blame it also states that “Farmers and poachers are hunting wild animals in the bushes.” People are breaking the rules and nobody's saying
As human development increases, more wild lion habitats are being destroyed or used for farming or ranching livestock. When a lion kills/threatens a farmer or a rancher 's livelihood, that individual is likely to poach or poison the lion in retaliation. Farmers and Ranchers are more likely to kill the lion to make sure they won’t their crops or livestock don’t get threatened. Moreover, conservation groups work with people living in lion territories to educate them about the lion 's ecological importance and develop cheaper ways to protect their subsistence.
The two articles “Attack of the Man Eaters” and “Meet the Lion Whisperer” written by Lauren Tarshes and Susan Orlean share the thought of lions and one man’s sensational story. In the article “Attack of the Man Eaters” it tells how these lions were hunted and killed because they weren’t liked and they’ve killed many people over the years. In the article “Meet the Lion Whisperer” it tells how when lions are raised in sanctuaries with petting zoos they can’t survive in the wild and are used in events called canned hunts and the lions are often used in circus acts.

Nozu informs readers that, “in the United States, specifically North America there are endangered mountain lions who are still being hunted today.” Nozu also explains that, “there were 800 lions legally killed over a decade by Well-heeled foreigners who shelled out serious money to prove their prowes.”People are worried about an endangered species but doesn’t give a second thought to the endangered animals getting murdered in their backyard. Because this lion was given a name and a hashtag it is now easier for Americans to jump on board with all the celebrities on the justice for Cecil
Everyone knows that the lion population had declined through the years, but most people don’t know how many are left and the reasons behind their disappearance. Some lions have died off from natural causes such as a loss of habitat, food, and a water supply. However, their biggest threat is humans. Humans are the reason why there are so few lions left to roam the world.
Majestic, noble, and brave, this famous iconic wild animal on the planet has captivated the people since the beginning of time. They are most feared by other animals thus, known as the king of the jungle – no other than the lions. Member of the genus Panthera, the lion is one of the big cats in the Felidae family. A lion’s head and body size average about 4.5 to 6.5 feet and tail of about 26 to 40 inches in length. A lion also weighs about 265 up to 420 pounds and a size relative to a 6-foot human. These mammals are also carnivores. Lions have always seen hunting in groups called pride. While lions generally avoid a full-grown elephant, lions still prefer their preys large like the zebras, buffaloes, and giraffes. Poised as the top animal in the ecological pyramid, lions have strong physical qualities, fascinating reputation, and an unfortunate decreasing number of population.
From North America, all the way to Africa, and everywhere in between has problems with animals being hunted for recreational use. “In Tanzania, ~26% of the land surface area is set aside for trophy hunting of wildlife; these 250000 [km.sup.2] are protected against land use conversion and represent adequate habitat for large wildlife populations” (Kiffner). African lions are the major source of income for these trophy hunters which is leading to a detrimental decrease of population in the continent. These lions are set up and put in locations where hunters know they will be, and therefore easier to hunt. Not only is trophy killing reducing numbers, but also causing problems in the animal kingdom that humans do not realize. “The detrimental impact of shooting male lions on the entire lion population is mainly a function of infanticide following pride take-over by new male lions” (Kiffner). Male lions are the leaders of the pack and when they are killed, their animal kingdom can also be disrupted adding to additional problems. There are so only so many male lions in a pride, and trophy hunting is all revolved around killing the best beast you can find, and since there are so few, the male dominance becomes out of sync. An extra problem that all stems from trophy killing in the lion pride is when the new male lion does take over a pride he kills the cubs that belonged to the previous leader. "Lions really are becoming more of an
While most people believe that most lions roam around and have a care free life, that is not the truth. Lions are born in captivity. Raised in petting farms until they get to old. Then what happens? Most people think they can just let the lion go and everything will be ok. But lions don't know how to hunt if there born in captivity. Lions all around South Africa are dying because of this issue. Also, lion petting farms are causing lions to over populated. Which means more and more lions are born into captivity. Lion petting farms take lions from the wild, or ones that have been in captivity and breed them to make Cubs. When there Cubs, the baby lions are used for the petting zoo's, which you can pet baby lions and feed them too. But when they get older there to big to be used, they have no room in the petting zoo, so they get sent away. So, there forced in participating in what's called " canned hunts," which lions are put into fenced areas and sow, times sedated to make a easier target. Others, are born in petting farms when people come to pet baby lions. But when they get to old, they end up either being released in the wild, were they have no idea how to hunt. Or even sold to circuses, or sent to Asia which there's bones are used as medicine. But if there lucky, they'll end up in one of South Africa's national parks, which is monitored to make sure the lions have enough space and room to hunt and roam
