The Mona Lisa Is without a doubt the Most famous painting in the world, given so it makes it such a target for many people. It was stolen in august 1911 from an art museum in Paris France called the Louvre. The man who stole it did it right after the museum closed for the day so nobody could see him do it. Which makes you wonder who stole it, how did they steal it, why is it so famous? You already know that the Mona Lisa was stolen in august 1911, but it was recovered in December 1913 in Florence, Italy the same city it was painted in It was stolen by a man named Vincenzo Peruggia who was a worker at the museum so he knew where everything was located. He hid in the mezzanine all day so he could commit the theft right after the gallery closed. For being the Most famous painting in the world, it took guards at the museum almost 24 hours to realize that the masterpiece was missing. They even interviewed Pablo Picasso as a defendant as a result of him having friends who stole art and gave it to him as gifts. So you can guess what the authorities said when they found him with a bunch of stolen art. They eventually interviewed Vincenzo Peruggia but they let him go. He then went to Florence, Italy, where he tried to sell the painting to a vendor. But the vendor knew that probably the Mona Lisa should be in a museum somewhere soon after Vincenzo Peruggia was arrested. One reason it might be so famous is due to it being stolen. most people knew what it was in Europe, but when the newspaper headlines said: MONA LISA STOLEN! then the acclaim spread to the Americas so when it was returned more people went to witness it. so once it was returned to the Louvre all was right with the Mona Lisa on the wall now the most eminent painting in the world.
