We are gathered here today to determine the fate of fellow Salem citizen Thomas Putman. As you may know, Thomas Putnam does everything he possibly can to ensure the safety of not only his community, but also his family. He is a beloved husband, and father to his family. To get justice, Putnam goes after the people of Salem declaring them witches. Thomas Putnam was a family focused man. He and his wife lost seven of their eight children from supernatural causes due to witchcraft. Putnam started accusing people of being witches because their children had been grievously taken away from them. Because the Putmans had experienced the devils powers first hand, they did not want other families to experience this horrible phenomenon. They understood
One of the reasons for the witch accusations is because people wanted revenge on other people. When people had their differences in Salem they got mad at each other and started to accuse the person they were mad at. People also "acted more out of jealousy and greed than any sense of religious purpose" (Karson). The Putnams had a horrid disagreement with Osborne and they had been very frustrated with her and wanted revenge on her because of this argument. “Nobody liked Osborne either, especially a
Therefore, these wrong conclusions can cause individuals to wrongly place blame on others. Mrs. Putnam recognizes Goody Osburn as a witch because of their past encounters:
Amongst the dancers was Abigail Williams, an orphan and servant to Reverend Parris. When accusations of witchcraft targeted the girls, Abigail lies and confesses to Satanism: “I danced with the Devil; I saw him; I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss his hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!” (Miller 48). The puritans fear the devil so much that they willingly believe Abigail’s accusations of those consorting with the devil and imprison those she points her finger towards. Thus, Abigail uses her newfound influence to arrest the wife of her paramour, John Proctor, revealing her true feelings of greed and passion during the madness of the witch trials. Abigail was not the only abuser of mayhem; similar acts of greed and jealousy surfaced as the trials proceeded. Giles Corey, an old farmer of Salem, accuses Thomas Putnam, a wealthy and influential citizen of Salem, of making his daughter accuse landowners of witchcraft: “If Jacobs hangs for a witch he forfeits up his property—that’s law! And there is none but Putnam with the coin to buy so great a piece. This man is killing his neighbors for their land....The day his daughter cried out on Jacobs, he said she’d given him a fair gift of land” (Miller 96). Thomas Putnam 's greed uses the trials as means of monetary gain, thus prolonging the trials. Salem became a boiling pot of madness that melted away everyone 's pure and lustrous facade,
The individualism was opposite of the common nature that the Puritans tried to maintain. People believed that the materialism and the wealth of Salem Town threatened their Puritan values, and the Putnams, were one of the main families to denounce the changes. The Putnams tried to start a new church under Reverend Samuel Parris, “which several other families opposed on theological ground” (Schiff,33). The Putnams also had a strong influence behind the witchcraft accusations. Ann Putnam was the most prolific accuser and she would provide testimonies against accused witches. Historians believed that these political and social tensions contributed to the anxiety that caused the 1692 Salem Witch
Thomas Putnam is a perfect example of taking advantage of fear for personal enrichment. Putnam was a wealthy land owner who sought to add to his wealth by accusing others of witchcraft and buying their land. The convicted are usually forced to sell their land at second-rate prices. Putnam’s agenda is exposed when Giles Corey, a prosperous farmer, testifies on behalf of his wife to the court. According to Giles, Putnam
Furthermore, when a mystery person has told Giles that Mr.Putnam prompted his daughter to accuse George Jacobs of witchcraft, he indicated Putnam of lying. He said,“ My proof is there! If Jacobs hangs for a witch he forfeit up his property—that 's law. Abd there is none but Outnam with the coin to buy so great a piece. This man is killing his beighbors for their land!“
Ann Putnam just wanted payback so she accused him of being the King of Hell. Sources say “Ann Putnam then claimed that George was the “King Of Hell”. George Burroughs even lived in another town and gave his life to God and is now a King of Hell. The thing is though he is not, Many of those who were accused of witchcraft had unsettled accounts with their accusers or were seen as a threat to the Puritan values.” (http://historylists.org/events/list-of-5-possible-causes-of-the-salem-witch-trials.html.) People also say things about the way the Putnams accused George Burroughs, “If the Putnams and others ever laid plans to ensnare any one person in the course of the witch hunt, that person was George Burroughs.” (http://www.loyno.edu/~history/journal/1998-9/Karson.htm.) It says this
Don’t you think that these lies need to stop, how about in this very courtroom. Those in here all believed the Putnams when they stated that I could fly, ridiculous, a child flying. This started a riet in the town, “Witchcraft, witchcraft”, they yelled out, this court did not want to agree with them but look at us now, blaming me for witchcraft, where I did
Thomas Putnam had long held grudges against many people in Salem. Putnam had long held grudges against the Nurse family, who had prevented his brother-in-law from receiving the office of Minister, and Putnam, “meant to right matters however he could” (15). Putnam saw the witch trials as an opportunity to get revenge for the past slights against his family by the Nurses and others by putting Goody Nurse on trial for witchcraft. By continually using the trials in Salem to take

When he finds this out he was like he knew that Mr. Parris family was doing witchcraft. Mrs. Putnam didn’t have very good luck when it came to childbirth, she had seven children but only one made it through childbirth. The only child that they had was also very weak and sick so they had to attend to her. When Mr. Parris finally found out that Abigail and the other girls were in the
