Drug use in today’s society is something that has become too common. We have a large percentage of our population using drugs for numerous reasons. The stresses of our fast paced lives can be the reason we need drugs to keep up. We sometime take these drugs with out thinking of the future consequences and risk that might be attached to them. We have to teach society of the dangers of drugs and the treatment available to quit using.
We have too many people using drugs in our society today. “In 1996, 50.8% of high school seniors had used some illegal drug at some time during their life, 40.2% during the previous year, and 24.6% during the previous month.” This shows that at least half of the senior class in high schools use or have use

Almost half of the drug abusers also suffered from alcohol abuse at some point during their lifetime.” People don’t only use drugs get high or deal with the stresses of life, but also to deal with the problems with in them. People use drugs to cope with their anxieties, depression and schizophrenia. With the drugs the people feel that the disorder they have does not exist. They believe that they are everyone else and there is nothing wrong with them. “Initial low-level involvement with drugs may result from peer pressure, drug availability or other risk factors in an individual's social or family environment.” Many individuals use drugs to fit in with friends or to be excepted by a crowd of higher popularity than them. This happens a lot in high school with younger students being pressured by upper classmen.
People sometime do things without thinking about the repercussions of their actions. “Some people think that prescription drugs are safer and less addictive than street drugs…. But prescription drugs are only safe for the individuals who actually have prescriptions for them. That's because a doctor has examined these people and prescribed the right dose of medication for a specific medical condition. The doctor has also told them exactly how they should take the medicine, including things to avoid while taking the drug — such as drinking alcohol, smoking, or
The drug abuse is the most serious issue not only in United States but other parts of the world too. The statistic has shown that 24.4million of American including teens from age of 12, had used an illegal drugs. The primary purpose of drug is a medicine which is to cure diseases, but people in United States nowadays, have misused the usage of drugs by consuming them without recommendation or supervision from the expert.
Substance use disorders are relevant to the adolescent development. Abu-Shakra and Cox (2014) describe the pathway by which substance use disorder is effected by externalizing behaviours. Externalizing behaviours include impulsive or aggressive behavers. Many studies contribute to this discourse. In this paper, I will summarize the chapter provided by Abu-Shakra and Cox (2014) and will mention other studies that add to the discourse.
I truly believe that if you can approach and tackle an issue before it arises you have a better chance of preventing long-term issues that will emerge in the future. Through my studies I have learned that if you educate students on bad choice making and the consequences that come from it you have a better chance for those students not to make those bad decisions. For this Midterm Project I plan to target high school students and inform them about drug use and abuse. In my opinion I think that if we teach high school students the effects that drugs can have on your body and your future maybe we can prevent them from using drugs for the first time or stop the issue before it gets out of hand. Students who are in high school can be hard to talk to but if you use material and language that catches their attention your speech can very influential to them. I want to prevent teens from using drugs. I want and need them to be educated on all the harms that illegal substances do to your body immediately after using them and what long-term effects come with it as well. Students should be shown real life examples of citizens who have lived their lives influenced by drugs and examples of successful people who have chose a
Prescription opioid pain relievers account for more deaths than both cocaine and heroin combined (Stewart). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that the fatal overdoses caused by prescription drugs is around 26,000 a year in the United States (Szabo). Prescription drug abuse is becoming a greater threat each day. It has become an epidemic, especially in the United States. As of 2011, 75% of the world’s opioid prescription drugs were prescribed and consumed in a country that makes up less than five percent of the world’s population (Gupta). Why is that the case? The United States lacks strict regulation and monitoring of these drugs. Therefore, prescription drugs should be better regulated to prevent abuse
Education is the next stepping stone to the ultimate goal of prevention. According to The USA Today, 95% of unintentional poisoning deaths in the United States are drug overdoses and the number nearly doubled from 1999 to 2004 (“A Tragic Reminder” 3). Both parents and children alike do not understand the dangers that prescription drugs may bring ("Parenting of Teens" 1). After the recent death of actor Heath Ledger, his father issued a statement that said, “Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage” (“A Tragic Reminder” 1). Parents need to examine all areas of the problem and be aware of the lurking dangers. If more of the population understood the true threats that lie within the medicine cabinet, then young people today would have a much brighter outlook upon the future. Their outlook would not be based on the knowledge of how to use modern medicine for the betterment of our country and not its internal destruction. Today there are many myths regarding both legal and illegal drugs. Examples of these myths include the idea that marijuana causes people to become violent and the idea that aspirin is safe (Corder 3). In actuality, many have died due to hemorrhages as a result of aspirin abuse (Corder 3). Myths concerning drugs encircle American society; it is important for parents to maintain communication with their children in regard to
Today in our modern society, many people believe that teen’s develop a mindset of having a clean system and to stay drug free. However, people are not able to foresee that the drug use in America has rising up tremendously. Studies have shown that drugs can not only have impact on your life, but also have impact on those who surround you and also can led to the absence of adolescence. It leads to bad habits and only brings evil deeds. The possession of drugs and the conspiracy sell is illegal in the Unites States. If arrest and put on trial due to drugs can mean serious jail time. According to the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, people are considered to have a substance use disorder. (Live Science) The Live Science states “... people have strong urges to use a substance or can't control their use of it, or if their use impairs them in social situations or leads to risky behavior.” Members of society have needs when a drug is being in place into there normal day routine. The report also states that an estimated 27.1 million people in the U.S. used an illegal drug in the past month. (Live Science) The mass-production, sale and possession of illegal drugs should be banned in the United States.
Drug use in America is epidemic, and more figures are increasing compared to the past. Drug use ranges from hardcore drugs like crack ,cocaine, and heroine to recreational drugs like marijuana. Also, the abuse of prescription drugs like Oxycontin, and fentanyl are common go to choices. The Center of Disease Control states that 24 million Americans from the age of 12 and older use Illicit drugs, thats out of the 324 million total people living in the U.S. That's a significant number of people.
Although some people argue for the legalization of drugs, addiction to these substances has caused a huge increase in violent crimes in the home, at school, and on the street. Many people do not understand why individuals become addicted to drugs or how drugs change the brain to create compulsive drug abuse. They mistakenly view drug abuse and addiction as strictly a social problem and may characterize those who take drugs as morally weak. One very common belief is that drug abusers should be able to just stop taking drugs if they are only willing to change their behavior. This is a false and uneducated belief. Drug abuse may start as a social problem or social escape but one the addiction has taken ahold of a person
Throughout America, many cases of drug use in schools are reported every year. This being said, students every year are affected by such cases. For example, students who are using these 'recreation drugs' could be affecting surrounding students second handedly, essentially affecting their education in the long run as it persists. Resulting in this, the usage of drug-sniffing dogs coming around quarterly or weekly would catch the unsuspecting hoodrats red handed and guilty right on the spot. Along with this, it would reduce the amount of drugs that are in the hands of these pre-adult teens and put more education in their minds. As a result, the use of drug-sniffing dogs would effectively reduce drug use.
In our generation of teenage are in trouble.Today teens are exposed earlier than ever to drugs. Lately half of teens had been using drugs in their lives. Teen taking drugs could ruin their future. Over the past decade teenager rather drop-out or died because drugs. Some teenager suffered the permanent consequences.I think the victims of teen drug use could have done better in their lives.I honestly think the teen drug use have to stop before anymore teen be consumed by this. That why I came up with a couple solution to prevent teen drug use. My first solution is the schools to show a video who suffered drug. To explain the consequence they are facing when taking drugs. This solution can make teens think twice about using drugs. But there is
Since 2000, the drug use rate in America has risen to the highest it’s ever been. In a survey done in 2009, 8.7 percent of people age 12 and up said that they used illegal substances within a month of taking the survey, a 9 percent increase since 2008 (Abuse, National Institute on Drug, 2010). This statistic alone is very concerning due to
These days, drugs can be found everywhere, and it may seem like everyone's doing them. Lots of people are tempted by the excitement or escape that drugs seem to offer.
As humans, we tend to think for ourselves, and ourselves alone. We can more often than not be coerced into doing things by our peers (known as “peer pressure”). Individuals who use and abuse drugs think nothing of the effect they have on others, rarely caring about the effect they have even on themselves. Adolescents usually get addicted, or just “have fun” and experiment with drugs like marijuana and nicotine. Adults, especially those who have suffered
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NHI) (2012a), deaths regarding drug use has doubled since the 1980’s, furthermore it is stated that there are more illnesses and disabilities from drug abuse than any other avoidable health condition. There are many reasons why young people may choose to indulge in the risky behaviour that is drug use. Individuals may feel pressured by their peers, take this action out of curiosity or use it as a method for dealing with physiological or psychological problems (Better Health, 2012). A study performed by Miller and Plant (1996) in 1995
In today’s society there are many dangers many of which can be avoided and many that cannot. Such unavoidable dangers are what keep everyone alert on a daily basis even though accidents are unavoidable the best way of mitigating such things are to expect the unexpected precisely the reason for so many cautionary measures such as seatbelts in cars, anti-venom in medicine, fire prevention sprinklers in every building, and specially designed structures in building in the case of a natural disaster. One danger however that is nearly impossible to control or mitigate is the use of drugs in the form of recreation. In 2010 the leading cause of death in the United States was drug over doses, claiming the lives of approximately 38,329 people 22,134
